Don't see Miami going hard in the secondary but that was a nice draft.

Fun game.

Well lets see what Gase does since this is his first draft after seeing how the team plays with his own eyes on the field. I not sure I have faith in his decision making but at the same time I will be optimistic.

Wow, that's an insanely good draft!
Unfortunately, I think the Phins will end up with only 4 or 5 picks by the time Tannenbaum is done trading...

As long as they're in the first 3 rounds I'm okay with that.

I'm not. We need to build the depth on this team and stop relying on garbage players like Michael Thomas and (insert crappy linebacker here). If anything, I'd say we need more draft picks.

I posted the odds of sticking in the NFL after round 4 last year. I can't remember the percentages but they were incredibly low. Give me 4 starters every year any day. So I'd prefer 5 picks in 1-3 over 9 picks throughput the entire draft. Especially this year.

i get the temptation, but unfortunately the fail rate for guys in rounds 1 through 3 is nearly as high. specifically for the Dolphins, you just drafted guys like Jared Odrick, Koa Misi and John Jerry over 5th round pick Reshad Jones. Further, fellow SEC safeties and 3rd round picks Major Wright and Chad Jones (both currently out of the league) would've been selected without a chance at getting Jones.
other names from that same draft that you would not have selected... Geno Atkins (4th), Kam Chancellor (5th), Antonio Brown (6th)...

Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
The more picks we have, the more likely we can find some quality depth instead of relying on players that shouldn't even be in the NFL. Sure, I'd love to come out with a bunch of starters, but depth is just as important - both for now and the future.
Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
That would be great but for the fact that Tannebaum give away picks like candy I don't see Miami having more than just five or seven

Yeah, with all the free agents we added this offseason I'm expecting Tannenbaum to trade most of our picks and draft just a few players. That would be a HUGE mistake, but it's how Tannenbaum works.

Your strategy would actually be a good one for Madden '07. Madden '17, not so much.

Tannenbaum's strategy can actually make sense though, if you realize you suck at drafting. Might as well give away picks for players than make the picks and have a bag of used tampons.
EDIT: This is not an endorsement of said strategy, but there is logic to it.

That's true. It's also a good plan for a team that has a stacked roster that just needs one or two players to put it over the top.
It just sucks, because with all the stop-gap veterans that were signed it's going to be difficult for any rookies to get extensive playing time in 2017. I guess they think the Dolphins are "close". I don't share that view, but I guess we'll see...
Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
Yeah, the best build their teams through the draft.
Seems to me that Tannenbaum would have been a perfect fit with George Allen. Maybe we need to get him a Delorian with a flux capacitor or a wayback machine.

Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
It may sound stupid but the off-season pickups IMHO gives Miami a lot of options in the draft. BPA is always the best way to go in the draft. But filling these holes with "stopgaps" gives them freedom to go BPA and not for need.
I've mentioned it before, tannebaum scares me because of his penchant for dumb ass trades on draft day. On the surface the moves are great but, great moves in FA and bad drafts lead us to the same mediocre shit that we see now!
This draft is not deep in LB, OG, and S. Signing Allen and McDonald solidifies the FO's feelings about the depth at safety in the draft. If Miami doesn't trade out of the first then Miami will almost certainly take a G or a LB.

Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
The problem is, when you have all these stopgap vets making good money, it means the young guys sit on the bench and don't get to develop. Then when you do need them to play, they're not ready.
I would also argue that this draft is in fact very deep at guard, safety and LB. In fact, I'd say it's deep everywhere except QB and OT, maybe DT.

Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
This is a terrific draft for safeties in the middle rounds, and for OG in rounds 2 and 3 IMO. I agree with JMP that QB is one of the few positions that will be difficult to find. Also OT falls off a lot after Robinson IMO.
My latest stab at horse trading with it this morning; will try this game once a week til draft day, and likely trade a lot.
Round 2 Pick 6 (LAC): Charles Harris, DE/OLB, Missouri (A)
Round 2 Pick 8 (CAR): Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida (A)
Round 2 Pick 32 (CAR): Dorian Johnson, OG, Pittsburgh (A)
Round 3 Pick 4 (JAX): Gerald Everett, TE, South Alabama (B+)
Round 3 Pick 33 (COMP): Trey Hendrickson, DE, Florida Atlantic (B-)
Round 3 Pick 34 (CAR): Josh Jones, SS, NC State (A)
Round 3 Pick 43 (NYJ): Tyler Orlosky, C, West Virginia (A+)
Round 4 Pick 4 (CHI): Rasul Douglas, CB, West Virginia (B-)
Round 4 Pick 8 (CAR): Dawuane Smoot, DE/OLB, Illinois (A-)
Round 4 Pick 10 (CHI): Jeremy McNichols, RB, Boise State (B-)
Round 4 Pick 23 (OAK): Chad Hansen, WR, California (A+)
Round 5 Pick 8 (CAR): John Johnson, FS, Boston College (A)
Round 5 Pick 20 (TENN): Conor McDermott, OT, UCLA (B+)
Round 6 Pick 29 (PITT): Zane Gonzalez, K, Arizona State (A)

Re: Post Combine Mock Draft
Well, I have argued for years that trading away a player that you KNOW can play (Wes Welker) for draft picks is absolutely asinine. Since the draft is a big ol'crapshoot for even Bill Belichick. But especially for a team that continues to prove that sometimes even a blind squirrel starves to death before he finds an acorn.
When you are certifiably PUTRID at drafting, evaluating, strategic and tactical moves, at overall team building concepts, the absolute last thing you want to do is get rid of players that have PROVEN the ability to play IMO. Especially when the chance of drafting someone who is better is scant and none... and scant left town last year!
I have long thought the whole APPROACH to the draft for the Phins was abysmal, and nothing I have seen has changed my mind. We were one (un)fortunate bongmask video away from something I am betting was gonna be very very bad last year.
I do not think the approach has changed so I am expecting to be UNIMPRESSED again.
I certainly HOPE I am wrong. The team did make the playoffs, so maybe I am just bitter from years of abject suckitude from the team?

Welker was a different situation, because the Patriots included a "poison pill" in their offer to him that made it virtually impossible for the Phins to match. Plus, at the time Welker was a decent player - nothing more.
But in general, the idea of trading players isn't black and white - thanks to free agency and the salary cap. The reality is, some players simply "outprice" their usefullness to a team. You can't keep everyone, and to put a solid team together you sometimes have to choose a cheaper salary over proven talent. We're in an era where even a mediocre, injury prone player like Kiko Alonso can get a contract with $18.5 million in guaranteed money...when you start talking about star players, the numbers get astronomical. If you want to keep those players, you need to cut corners at other positions.

Round 2 Pick 22: Trey Hendrickson, DE, Florida Atlantic (B-)
Round 2 Pick 31 (ATL): Marcus Williams, FS, Utah (A-)

Round 5 Pick 40 (COMP): Deyshawn Bond, C, Cincinnati (D)

that is great as well. Miami doesn't show the skills to have this type of draft.

Ok, the updated mock. Traded down twice in the second to get two extra third rounders and move into the fourth. If Miami does anything close to this I will be very happy with it:
