did jumping on Timmons too quickly cost the Phins a chance at signing Brown?

The Dolphins so far have been reluctant to give free agent linebacker Zach Brown a deal as rich as Lawrence Timmons’ two-year, $12 million, which I find questionable because:

1) Brown, a Pro Bowler, is on the ascent and Timmons is either slightly past his prime or on the back side of it.

2) Pro Football Focus rated Brown 17th among linebackers last season, Timmons 70th, and said Brown graded out much better against the run: 26th, according to PFF, wheras Timmons was 82nd against the run among 89 qualifying linebackers.

You might not believe PFF’s numbers, but that’s a pretty sizable disparity.

3) Brown at 27 is three years younger than Timmons.

...and perhaps force Miami to have to rely on the hope that Misi will return?

Misi should have been release but restructuring his contract keeps Miami from getting into a bidding war.

Yeah, the Timmons signing filled me with a sense of MEH!!!

For that money, I would rather have had Brown, but...

Again, it looks to me like this Phins regime discounts the LBs big time.

A bunch of so-sos, has-beens, and young depth/special teamers seem to be all they think is needed?

Just another area where what we Phans think, does not jibe with what the front office thinks?

One advantage to the Timmons signing is he was content to go with a 2 year deal. Zach Brown will seek a long term deal for security. Reports are, we may still land him as the market is clearly not bearing what he hopes to make.

Yeah, I am wondering why nobody has signed Brown? Is he asking for the moon and stars plus a nebula or two?

Or is there something else up?

IMHO, i think it boils down to money and where his head is at.  When Brown was with Tennessee he violated team rules and was demoted for the latter half of his contract with the Titans.  Curious that his career is based of the one season he had with the Bills.  Brown has the very athletic ability that you need in a MLB.  But his troubles early in his career could be something that people haven't forgotten.  I don't think one pro bowl season will warrant getting 10 mil a year.

His agent is obviously giving him bad advice and overvaluing his worth. Regardless, Miami doesn't really need him right now.

Totally agree!!!!! I'd much rather get younger and develop.

Yep, if we're only going to play the 3rd LB 30% of the time, it should be a young guy that we can develop to hopefully replace Timmons in 2 years. Getting younger and faster on defense should be the priority in the draft. We already have enough stopgap vets.

I say forget Brown and make sure that Gase uses the draft to find a good LB
