Possible LB Prospect?

At first I kinda like this guy, but when reading the overview of his ability, something struck me as a big red flag. Somewhat reminiscent of our most recent colossal draft bust that we just recently cut.

Barry Jackson wrote:WEAKNESSES Undersized on the edge. May not have the frame to carry much more weight. Can be engulfed by size. Needs to get better with hands at point of attack. Still has issues where he looks like a basketball guy learning football. Production as pass rusher doesn't match his explosive traits. Pass rush is built around athleticism and not enough around skill. Has to get even tougher and more skilled against the run.

The part about production not matching explosiveness and basically just an athletic guy with little skill is EXACTLY what we just rid ourselves of, minus the knuckleheadedness.

Other than that, he could be a decent prospect, but that comparison just scares me.

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, Bowser was injured in “an exercise intended to promote team camaraderie days prior to a September game against the University of Connecticut. Bowser got into a scuffle with fellow linebacker Matt Adams during a heated altercation that got out of hand between the two longtime friends. Bowser got the worst of the exchange, suffering a broken orbital bone near his right eye that required surgery and sidelined him for five games during his senior year.”

That alone makes him undraftable to me. If I'm a GM I'm not taking any player who lost a fight to that degree.

I'd prefer not taking a SAM LB in round one but if he's there in two I'd draft Bowser.

I just read this.

I like the idea of Bowser as a prospect. If this draft lacks high end talent and explosive athletes, why not take an excellent athlete who's still growing into a football player?

The part about production not matching athleticism, all that says to me is he's still developing. With him only just now playing the sport, it makes total sense and he could be coached on all those points, including pass rushing moves and counters.

scotgif, I think you touched on either Dion Jordan or the like of guys like Egnew. IMO they had character issues that eliminated their capability to develop into a good NFL player. If Bowser has a good attitude, intelligence, and work ethic - he can put his athletic capability to use and develop into a very good player. That's the key - is he willing and able to put in the work?

Let's remember the flip side of the coin. You can draft a guy with all the polish and fundamentals in the world, if he's a limited athlete he won't be able to compete in the NFL. Just as bad to err in the other direction.
