Nice work JMP, I like this mock mainly for the talent that's on the board when we pick.

Charlton is not a bad pick, but there are certainly question marks on his desire and work ethic. A good athlete, but not a great one. Fills a need but honestly I'd be happier with either Barnett or Willis, both of whom are gone in this mock.

There are better graded talents still on the board for us though.

Peppers would probably be a steal at 22, and he could become that safety we pair next to Jones for years to come. Being a Michigan guy makes him just as likely a favorite of Ross, like Charlton would be.

You all know I love Njoku, and he would be a fine pick for us here. Just too much talent and only a Sophomore, his ceiling is sky high.

If you want to stick with defense, White is still on the board for us also. He could not only win a starting job at CB, but also punt returner - filling another need for us. Reading his scouting report, also a guy with great character, leadership and a workout freak. I'm totally sold on him.

The Chiefs can have Adams. I think he'll be a bust.

Would we really have the guts to pass on Lamp? Not only could he play guard, some scouts believe he could play RT also - allowing us to move on from the underwhelming Juwan James. Interesting thought, if it comes to that choice for us.

I'm really excited to see how this plays out.

If the draft played out the way I have it, I'd probably take Tre'Davious White.

But to me, Charlton just seems like an ideal fit for what the Phins want. I think he'll be a solid, dependable player - not a star, but a decent player for years to come. Not what I'm looking for, but I think the Phins would be very happy with that. I envision him rotating in behind Branch early in his career, with Hayes playing behind Wake. I'd feel much better about Charlton if Branch wasn't here, but it is what it is.

I've already said numerous times that the Phins won't take a TE.

As for Lamp - I just don't think the Phins place a high value on guards, and I think they'll wait till the 3rd or 4th.

Yeah, I agree with your thinking here. Charlton a definite possibility given what we've heard the Fins are thinking.

Timing is perfect for this film breakdown that was just posted: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article145944599.html

I just read that piece on Charlton.

I won't go so far as to call him a "bust", but to me his limited athletic ability will cap his ceiling for sure. Probably another Odrick-type contributor, but not a star. I'd take him in the 2nd round, not the first.

Odrick is exactly what I was thinking as a comparison. Quinton Coples too - a player Tannenbaum drafted. I think Charlton is better than both IMO, but he's not the "stud" I'd like to get in round one.

Charlton equals Olivier Vernon for a whole lot less than $50 Million !!!!

I agree completely with that assessment.

Probably be a good pick. I suspect this or a similar scenario is what Tannenbaum is HOPING happens.

I agree with W1 one though, I would go for Peppers. Better Safety play would have helped the Phins D out immensely last year IMHO.

I have long thought that the pick would be a DB, as that is how the grading is going to stack up, but who knows what sorts of insanity will ensue. If the QBs drop, there may be some teams looking to move up back into the bottom of the 1st round. IF I could garner a few mid rounders and pick up a 1st next year, I might just make that trade.

I am really sort of "MEH to the Max" on the Lamp pick. Lamp or getting say David Sharp, a RT that will get moved to Guard in the NFL in the 3rd, or one of the other Guards rated all around the same grades would be equally the same IMO.

I keep hearing Joe Mixon might go in the late 1st round?

Does anyone think Tannenbaum could convince Ross to pull the trigger on this?

Totally agree.

Here is the bright spot for fans that are not happy with the Charlton pick: Quinton Coples was an athletic freak.  Just not a good football player.  His measurables were all very good bordering on elite and likely "wowed" Tannenbaum.

Charlton has only one thing going for him - size.  He has prototypical height and weight for an end.  He does not have the speed or combine results to suggest he is an elite quick-twitch athlete.  Just the opposite in fact, his measurables are poor.  This could turn off Tannenbaum who believes in analytics and prototypes.

I'm going to predict that Mixon doesn't go before round 5, and may go undrafted. It's easy to find quality RBs these days, so no need to take one with Mixon's off-field issues.

Charlton does fit the size prototype, and I think his Combine measureables were actually pretty strong for a guy of his size. A 3-cone drill of 7.17 for a 280 pound lineman isn't that bad at all, and he was top 10 in the vertical jump and just outside the top 10 in the 20-yard shuttle. I think he's the type of lineman Tannenbaum drools over. Maybe Gase's input will change things, but to me Charlton just looks like a classic Tannenbaum player.

Just made an edit...

I didn't feel comfortable with the Saints taking a WR at 32, so I gave them a CB instead. That leaves just one WR taken in the first (Mike Williams), and I'm OK with that...although I do like Corey Davis a lot. I'm not sold on John Ross despite his insane 40 time. I think Davis and Ross both go early 2nd.

The Browns WOULD LOVE IT if they could select the players you have them taking. Two starting defenders in the first round - PLUS Watson at the top of the 2nd? That goes a long way towards shoring them up on both sides of the ball.

Am I missing anyone that should be there?  Note that I only have one QB going in the first.  I'm projecting the Browns to take Deshaun Watson with the first pick in round 2.

As good a guess as I would have. In this situation, I think I'd favor a trade down, maybe more than once.

I don't think Willis goes quite that high, and I think Walker goes in the second, but then again these types of players have a big dropoff after the first round types. Rivers would likely be the next one off the board under these circumstances IMO. WR is deep this year, almost as deep as CB.

That said, I'd love a trade down, then possibly taking Lamp, Peppers or King under this scenario.

I toyed with giving them Reddick, but when I realized Hooker was still on the board I went with him.

The bigger question is what beer will JMP choose for the draft ? I'm going with Rhinegiest Truth IPA. Maybe the best thing to ever come out of Cincinnati.

Haven't heard of that one, but if it's an IPA I'm in! I'm going local (Long Island) this weekend: drinking a Greenport Harbor Other Side IPA right now, and I've got two 6's in the fridge from Montauk Brewery - Wave Chaser IPA and Summer Ale. All excellent beers. I may save those Wave Chasers for day one of the draft...if they survive the weekend! afro

Version2.0 is up - see first post. I made a couple of changes based on the Gareon Conley rape allegations. I'm taking him out of the first round and moving Adoree' Jackson in. I also moved Tre'Davious White up.

My favorite comment from the PFT story.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/04/25/report-gareon-conley-accused-of-sexual-assault-in-cleveland/

So during the most important time of his burgeoning career to stay out of trouble, Gareon Conley invited a stranger he met in an elevator back to his room for a foursome. What could go wrong?

It really shouldn't be that hard for these guys to avoid staying out of trouble ONE WEEK before the draft. This isn't even about whether it's true or not, it's about guys like this putting themselves in a position for something bad to happen. I've never been accused of rape, and I've never met a strange woman in an elevator and invited her to join me in a foursome. But I'm sure that's just a coincidence, right? Cool

And don't even get me started on the Brantley thing...
