Tannehill leaves with knee injury - do you want Matt Moore or Kaepernick? Empty Tannehill leaves with knee injury - do you want Matt Moore or Kaepernick?

Post by white1 Thu Aug 03, 2017 9:35 am

Tannehill "tweaked" the knee today running to the sidelines, via Twitter and PFT:  http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/08/03/ryan-tannehill-heads-to-locker-room-after-non-contact-slip/

Almost immediately, Matt Moore throws 55 yard TD bomb to Kenny Stills.

So, if we make the educated guess that Tannehill may now need to go under the knife on that knee, who do you want starting in Miami all season - Matt Moore or Kaepernick? Because from my vantage point, those are the only viable options out there right now.  We're not trading for anyone better.

Omar just threw out another possibility, how about Jay Cutler?

Yeah, I don't like that option either.

I'll actually take Moore over Cutler. Hell at least he won a few games and took us to the playoffs last year. What has Cutler done.... Ever?

I think Kaepernick has the most talent out of the group but does a team want the distraction

Honestly I think "distraction" is probably overrated. The more interesting question, could he learn the offense and exceed Matt Moore performance between now and week 1? Not sure that's a lead pipe lock, although Kaep has the mobility that makes him a closer fit to what Tanny brings to this offense.

Moore gets little respect for what he did for us last season. Finishing out the Cards game, and getting the Ws we needed to make the playoffs. Given a full training camp under Gase tutelage, tailoring the offense to his strengths instead of Tanny, I really think we could be just fine with him. Beyond Moore? Yeah, we got nobody.

That's what makes me think Kaep (or Cutler) - because I wouldn't want to go into the season literally one-deep at QB.

There's a QB battle in Denver. Could we make a play for the loser?

I'd love it if Lynch was the loser, but I don't see that happening. S

Siemian? It would be interesting to see what Gase could do with him. However, we need a more Cutler-Kaep guy for a couple reasons.

Siemian and his agent will want starter money, because he's just starting out in his career. Denver will want a king's ransom in trade too. Then, what do we do with Tannehill? I believe he still has quite a bit of gauranteed money coming, can't get out of that contract too easily. I could be mistaken there, don't fully know the "out" clauses.

Cutler (or Kaep) cost nothing in trade. Plus, they are older and further along, and will be satisfied with a short-term more stop-gap contract. Neither is a threat to the long term future of Tannehill here in Miami.

Wow, this is not good news. I said all along that Tannehill should have had the ACL/MCL surgery - and this is exactly why. A surgically repaired knee is stronger than an injured knee that wasn't repaired. If Tannehill's knee is going to buckle on a simple scramble, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the seaosn - when he'll be putting a lot more pressure on the knee than just running.

Let's not jump to conclusions and just hope for the best. Maybe it's nothing.

BUT...if this is a significant injury, obviously Matt Moore is the next man up. The Dolphins' staff absolutely loves him, and he'll take over. Maybe the Phins add Kaep as a backup, but Moore would be the unquestioned starter.

Personally, I think Moore sucks, and if it was up to me I'd roll with Kaep because he doesn't throw stupid INTs like Moore and he can make plays with his legs.

Of course, the real issue here is that the Phins continue to ignore the QB position year after year, choosing not to develop a young player for situations like this. It is what it is.

Well it's a good point, I think, but this theory was refuted earlier in the offseason about the strength of the knee.

Obviously, time has proven otherwise.

Maybe now the full surgical procedure will be done and he'll have a full year to rehab, train and recover - instead of trying to work a non-surgical miracle over the course of 8 months.

In any case, ultimately the results for 2017 now carry a big "*". It's clearly Tannehill's team now, and having a backup QB instead is a disadvantage for us.

Biggest hope in my mind is that our running game is even stronger, and our defense takes a huge leap forward. Early camp results on the defensive line have been promising, maybe they will save our asses this season. We will see.

I'm told the Dolphins are hoping for the best (obviously) after Tannehill is examined but same source tells me team fearing the worst.

It was never refuted for me. It's common sense...an injured knee that is repaired is going to be stronger than an injured knee that was not repaired. IMHO, the Phins medical staff completely botched this situation.

But again - at this point, let's just hope for the best...maybe it's nothing...

Oh and after reading it? I'm thinking best option is actually Kaep.

Agreed, and it's not really close. Kaep is the best of a very unimpressive list.

I wonder if the Browns would still consider trading Brock Osweiler...I don't really like him, but Gase coached him in Denver. And I don't think Cutler will un-retire, but given the Gase connection it wouldn't surprise me if Gase reached out to him.

Let me guess...it was the team medical staff who advised Tanny and the team that surgery wasn't necessary. I wonder if these are the same guys who advised Saban that Culpepper was just fine but Brees's shoulder was a mess?

BTW I'd rather have my eyes gouged out with red hot pokers than see Kaepernick on this team. Him even being in the NFL at all this season is horrible enough but with THIS team??? After all the praise he heaped on Castro??? Am I the only one who remembers that???

Now is the time. The time to take a Dive For Darnold!!!

It makes perfect sense. The Pats are winning the division yet again anyway and this team was only going to take a step back even before players started dropping left and right in practice. We all knew this. maybe some of us didn't want to admit it, but we knew.

The one problem is that the Jets are clearly wanting to do the same thing, and I'm afraid their team is far more committed to it. I can see Gase being one of those stubborn bastards who goes into the finale with 2 wins and has the Fins go all out anyway.

It would be my wet dream for the Fins to somehow wind up with Lynch after all, but they'd likely have to give up even more than the Vikings did for Bradford last year.

I could care less what Kaps done or said. If he can play and Tanny is done sign him now. Matt Moore will not make it through the preseason. He takes more dumb hits than Tanny.

So let me get this straight...Tannehill was allowed to make the decision to avoid surgery completely on his own??? Shocked Shocked Shocked

Even if that's the official party line, I still refuse to believe it.

All of a sudden I have this strong desire for the Ravens to sign Kaepernick ASAP. Like, in the next hour or two. It just came over me...

Kaepernick and RGIII are the only realistic options. Likely low cost, no draft picks given up.

Personalities aside, that's what it is down to. One guy was at least healthy enough to play all season last year (albeit not that well), the other wasn't and hasn't been for a long time.

Truthfully, neither is that much worse an option than Sam Bradford was when Minnesota faced this same problem. In fact, Kaep may actually be slightly better than Bradford.

Agreed. And Kaep doesn't turn the ball over either...unlike Fumblin' Matt Moore.

I think Kaep being singled out and blackballed is completely unfair. Whether I agree with him or not, he has the right to protest and the right to think what he wants. Many other players - including several Dolphins - followed Kaep's lead with the National Anthem. But no one mentions those players - while Kaep is unemployed. It's not right.

Anyway, the NFL is literred with criminals. Kaep isn't a criminal, and if he can help the Phins win, I'm on board.
