QBs At Age 40 And Beyond Empty QBs At Age 40 And Beyond

I just happened to be doing some research on this the other day, actually. Prior to Tom Brady, there have been 17 QBs in NFL history who played at age 40. None of them started a full season, although Warren Moon and Vinny Testaverde might have had they not gotten injured.

Of those 17 QBs, 11 of them retired after their age 40 season, meaning only six of them played after age 40. Of those six, only Favre, Moon and Testaverde had 10 career starts or more after age 40. (Steve Deberg is a special case. He doesn't show up in the first link because he retired after his age 39 season in '93, and then came back for one season at age 44.)

Only four QBs have played at age 43 or older, none of them past age 44, and as noted earlier one of those was Deberg being brought out of mothballs in '98. Flutie, Moon and Testaverde combined for 7 starts (six by Testaverde) at this age, and no QB has ever played beyond age 44.

So yeah, the end should finally be near for Brady. As noted above, no 40-year old QB has ever started every game in a season before so he'd be the first. But even after that his chances of actually continuing to play well are virtually nil, no matter how it looks or what he says.

Testaverde only started in 2004 because of Quincy Carter's sudden release due to his drug problem.

Favre had a great season at age 40, then got old overnight, which is the way it often happens.

Moon did have a very good year at age 41. He had a truly great year at 39 also.

But yeah, Brady is on borrowed time. I'm amazed he's lasted this long without a dropoff. Both Manning and Marino really fell off after a key injury at 39 and 38 respectively. If Brady suffers an injury at his age, it's probably the end of the line.
