Another OL injury: Kraig Urbik

The Miami Dolphins are down to their third-string plan for the starting left guard spot.

That is the situation because coach Adam Gase said Monday that Kraig Urbik, who had missed the last week with a back problem, now has a knee injury that will likely force him to miss the regular-season opener, and possibly longer. Urbik, however, is not expected to be out the entire season, a league source told The Miami Herald.

Urbik, who started at center much of last season, was expected to play the left guard spot following the loss of starting left guard Ted Larsen, who is out for at least half the season to a biceps injury.

...

In the meantime, the Dolphins will conduct what amounts to a competition for a wide open starting spot.

Anthony Steen, Jesse Davis and Jake Brendel took snaps with the starting offense on Monday as the Dolphins worked a dual practice with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Man, this is getting UGLY. Hopefully Urbik won't be out long, because the depth behind him is pretty damn weak.

Too bad Tannenbaum/Gase couldn't be bothered to draft a guard. Oh wait...they did draft a guard - a 5th rounder who apparently is not even close to being ready. No

Jesse Davis is the frontrunner to start at left guard for the Dolphins in Week 1.
The Dolphins had hoped Ted Larsen would win this job, but he tore his biceps and is a candidate for I.R./return. Rookie Isaac Asiata has not stepped forward. Davis is a third-year undrafted free agent out of Idaho who previously spent time with the Jets. Both of the Dolphins' guard spots are significant concerns.

UGH. Hope Matt Moore is ready, because Cutler may not last long behind this OL.

I would LOVE to know just how the hell Gase is running his practices, and why the Players' Association isn't up in arms about it. This seems to me the exact sort of situation they whined about in the last CBA. Are any other teams' players dropping like flies in practice?

Usually when you get a rash of injuries like this, particularly in the trenches, it's because one side is clearly outmatched by the other, and/or the strength training is shit.

I can believe the outmatched part.

Wake - Suh - Hayes - Godchaux (yes, I named him a starter because he is a starter) can form a strong unit, with physical strength, power and speed.

I'm actually concerned the real reason Godcheaux's been looking good is because he's only been facing the Fins' O-line and once he faces even average competition he'll suddenly disappear.

He made some good plays against Atlanta in week 1 preseason game, and that was against starters.

Nah, he's going to be fine.

Still not expecting much from Godchaux. In 2 games he's looked pretty underwhelming to my eyes. He at least looks like he belongs, but I don't expect anything more than average play. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

Maybe Jesse Davis will end up being a better guard than I expected. This fluff piece in the Sun Sentinel sounds good to me...it would be great to see a young lineman make an impact this year (because it seems like we may not get much from Asiata this season).
