State Of the Team Empty State Of the Team

Post by DolFan 316 Tue Aug 29, 2017 8:10 am

AKA state of confusion, apparently. After outdoing Phillips this entire time Godcheaux now might NOT be starting because Phillips looked good in one preseason game. Maxwell has been horrible yet still might not lose his starting job, or might just be splitting time. There's a battle for the punting job of all things and a mini-crisis on which LBs will play special teams. Oh, and Neville Hewitt will likely be cut.

The season starts in less than two weeks, and if you don't know who your starters are yet when will you know?

I agree that Phillips played better than Godchaux last week and said as much in my game review...but are you really going to dismiss the months that Godchaux was supposedly ahead just because Phillips was slightly better one day? I'd probably prefer to start Phillips, but after all the talk about how Godchaux was the best thing since sliced bread this seems odd.

And I'm no fan of Maxwell, but he looked pretty good against Atlanta with 2 forced fumbles. Now he loses his job because he had a bad showing against Philly? I certainly won't cry if Verner gets the job over Maxwell, but it just seems odd that a player could be a starter for months and then lose his job over one game.

And the team still doesn't know yet if Davis is better than Steen? Really???

As for Hewitt, the team supposedly loved him but now he may get cut because he's battling an injury? Huh? If you really like him, you find a way to keep him - PUP or even IR if necessary.

I don't know...this staff does a lot of strange things. It doesn't really breed confidence when they appear to be so indecisive.

Having a "you've got to EARN your job around HERE!" philosophy only works if the coach actually knows who's done the earning. I do not believe Gase has this ability. He at least can make no-brainer decisions like cutting Thomas and Turner last season but even then he takes far longer than he should to see what everyone else does from the start. We're talking about someone who actually started Thomas over Tunsil in preseason a year ago. I have a bad feeling Gase is yet another one of those alpha male wannabe coaches who's more interested in proving to everyone he's in charge than actually doing or knowing what's best or sensible for the team.

If Phillips starts I'm going to be upset. He totally lost his starting spot to Godchaux, then proceeds to deliver on a fluky INT in the Eagles preseason game. You want to count on THAT happening every week?

No matter. He can start or not.

Godchaux is going to get just as many snaps, at least, as our team plans to rotate the DTs to keep them fresh. Just wait until Phillips turns in his same old lackluster game tape, showing him getting pushed around, and he will lose the job for good. I'm not sweating it.

Godchaux will definitely get a lot of playing time.

Hopefully either Phillips or Godchaux steps up their game enough to really claim the starting job. If it is truly neck and neck right now, that's not a good sign for the DT position IMO. I get that teams rotate D-linemen, but if you have two guys splitting snaps almost equally it generally means that neither one of them is all that good. Suh doesn't split snaps with anyone...he plays almost every snap. Of course, it comes down to condtioning too - a lot of these big guys just aren't in good enough shape to play a full game.

Phillips is your classic "I won't try hard until absolutely I have to" player. If he wasn't in the NFL he'd be one of those people who loses 20-40 pounds, then gains it all back, then loses it again, then gains it all back once more, etc.

But again, everyone else can see this except Gase. Why is that???

People who feel like they constantly have to play mind games with you 24/7 because they honestly think you won't be motivated otherwise annoy the hell out of me.

We're talking about a team that's counting on Pouncey to be healthy every week, so... Laughing

This just in, another practice report from my official "Godchaux Watch".

Mark my words, he's replacing Phillips. Starter or not.

Well, Suh usually gets doubled, so Godchaux will get his chances to be "disruptive" this season. Let's see if he can answer the call when the games count. Like I said, I haven't been overly impressed with him in the preseason games, but I am certainly pulling for him...we desperately need someone other than Suh to defend the middle.

Unless Godchaux can get to the QB in 1 second, it doesn't matter who starts.

I know I've been very negative lately, and I apologize, but I foresee a very bad season; hopefully if it's too bad it ends up being a huge positive for next year.

And that, in a nutshell, is what's wrong with this defense. Receivers are wide open the second the ball is snapped because: A) the corners are usually 10 yards off the line, and B) the LBs and free safety are godawful in coverage. Pass rush doesn't matter if the ball comes out immediately to wide open receivers.

Against the run, it's just as bad. The Phins' DL plays the pass first...meaning that they rush the QB - and the OL knows what they're doing and RBs can just run right by them.

I'm in the same state of mind as you. I do think the offense could possibly be marginally better...but this defense has the potential to be terrible. We got away with it last year because we played some bad teams - but this season, the schedule appears to be much more difficult. Fortunately, we should get 2 wins against the Jets and hopefully at least one against the Bills...after that, good luck.

This isn't that other site, you don't need to do that here.

Hell, I was predicting 4 wins or less this season way before it was cool Cool

its like you can see the future or something...

Asked if he believes he still can win the starting job, Phillips said: “That was never a question in my mind. So yeah....I felt like this was my best preseason, training camp, everything. I've been sticking to the grind.”

So where has he improved?

“I'm just playing harder, honestly,” he said.

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article169973212.html

so conversely, he's saying he just wasn't trying that hard before. so now i am really starting to wonder if this whole thing about Godchaux getting starting reps was less about Godchaux being better and more about Phillips just not trying. what if Godchaux really isn't that good, but just good enough to be better than a guy who isn't giving effort?

wow, again i am amazed at your soothe-seeing ability...

Phillips said, “This offseason I came in heavy at 347. Training camp out here you're going to lose weight. It wasn't hard [to lose weight]. I knew it was going to come off."

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article169973212.html

so let me get this straight. he's coming into a camp knowing he needs to be in shape to fight for his spot and he knowingly shows up out of shape? sounds like this guy just doesn't care.

I think people just need to chill out on Godchaux...how many times have we seen summer superstars fall off the face of the Earth come September? Happens every single year. Cripes, I'm still waiting for Kirby Dar Dar to make an impact in the regular season!

Call me jaded, call me shell-shocked...whatever you call it, I'm not convinced till I see it for real. Don't tell me about how good a guy is in practice in August - show me in an actual game.

Now, maybe Godchaux really is the Next Big Thing...but I'll wait till it actually happens before I hop on that bandwagon. No more bold predictions from me - not with this damn team's track record.

Eh, I think the whole pump up Godchaux thing was an effort to motivate LazyArse Phillips.

When he wants to, Phillips is a darn good DT who shows some freakish athleticism for such a big guy.

But I do not think he is real dedicated and seems to sort of get lost/take plays off.

Maybe Godchaux can motivate him.

Remember how last year started, and how it turned around? The defense sucked weenie water then and it looks likely to suck rancid weenie water this year too!

Everything is gonna ride on Cutler not going apeshat and alienating everyone in Miami.

And then, we have the same old problems to worry about...injuries on a thin O-line....injuries to the LB spot where it is held together with rotten shoestring and eighteen year old bubblegum. Plus the DB spot looks....same ol same ol....the team just ain't DEEP ENOUGH anywhere IMO.

Schedule does look tough, but I figured last year's wasn't all that favorable either.

I think Gase does have some of the Shula decision-making in him where he takes too long to call a terd a TURD and boot him, but he eventually does get to the decision and usually makes the correct call as to how to fix the problem.

In Gase I trust until it is time not to trust. He took the team last year that I was sure was all chicken shat and turned it into an unappetizing lump of moldy, runny, chicken salad. Not edible of course, but still not chicken shat IMHO.

That buys him some breathing room IMHO.

I do agree some of things I have been seeing and reading are puzzling. But then again...In Gase I trust...for now.

Well said FF.

I want to see improvement on both sides of the ball. Encouraged on offense, minus the offensive line. However, on defense, have we ever seen a green DC really field a great defense? Seems to me it's always been the grizzled vets: Wade Phillips, or Nolan, or the Eagles guy, or the Pittsburgh guy (with a defensive minded head coach anyways).

I just don't know if this scheme is sound. I know we had shit depth last season, but damn. Is it really that hard to "fit" the run game?
