Phins add a new kicker - Cody Parkey + an injury-prone linebacker

The Dolphins didn't bring in any competition for Andrew Franks this offseason.

Turns out, he was competing against the rest of the league.

The Dolphins have a new kicker, and his name is Cody Parkey.

They claimed him off waivers Sunday, one day after the Browns waived the young specialist.

...

If Parkey’s name sounds familiar, it should. He missed three kicks in the Dolphins’ overtime win over the Browns last year, including a game-winner at the end of regulation. He he made any of those three kicks, the Dolphins would not have reached the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

But Parkey was good on all but two of his other attempts last year, and a had a good chance to make the Browns’ roster this year.

Parkey, a native of Jupiter, was a Pro Bowl selection in 2014, when he set a new rookie scoring record with 150 points.

For his career, Parkey has made 55 of 65 attempts, including all five of his tries from 50 or more yards. Franks, meanwhile, has a significantly lower make percentage (78.4 percent to Parkey’s 84.6 percent) and is just 2 of 4 from 50-plus. Franks did nail a 55-yarder to force overtime in Buffalo last Christmas Eve.

I'm OK with the Parkey addition. He's not great, but he's an upgrade IMO. I never liked Franks.

The new LB, though, seems like a waste. He's small and always injured. He's mostly an inside LB..about 6' tall and 225-230.

They also picked up ex-Chiefs linebacker Justin March-Lillard, who had 22 tackles a year ago. March-Lillard brings needed depth to the position, but also injury concern. Undrafted out of Akron, March-Lillard spent all of 2015 and half of 2016 on injured reserve.

I was sure they would try and bring back Jelani Jenkins. Jenkins wont ever be a stud but He would assuredly be ready to play in this defense until Mauluga is ready.

That is stupid to me as well. What needs to happen is Suh needs to take a pay cut or get traded Miami can't afford to grab good players like Joe Haden when needed.

Alex Boone would help this team immensely. He should be a priority.

Does Miami go to local hospitals to fill its roster?

Take away that 3-miss game VS the Fins, and Parkey was 17 of 19 on FGs last season. I have no problem with this.

On the other hand, it couldn't be more obvious this team simply doesn't give a damn about the LB position.

I know it's "just" a kicker, but the more I think about Parkey over Franks the better I feel. Any time Franks lined up for a FG, I didn't trust that he'd make it, even on "easy" FGs...I just never thought he was any good. On a team that figures to play some shootouts this season, having a more reliable kicker can make a big difference. And, Parkey is a Dolphins fan so that's a bonus!

I was scratching my head initially on this move, but yeah, apparently he was on the team's radar and they pounced as soon as he came available. Good leg for kickoffs too, I think I read.

Well, he is from Jupiter, so the inter-solar system training squads are working for something.  Plus, the gravity on Jupiter is insane, so I'd expect he could kick the shit out of the ball.
