Do the Phins play press coverage or not?
After watching the Chargers’ Phillip Rivers complete 31 of 39 passes for 323 yards with a 110.6 passer rating against his unit, Dolphins defensive coordinator Matt Burke said Thursday that his defensive backs must simply be tighter in coverage.
“Here’s what I told the guys,” Burke said. “Opposing offenses are not going to want to deal with our pass rush. I think the message to the linebacker and defensive backs, is we have to challenge throws better on the outside part of the field and match up our underneath progressions a little bit tighter.
“[Rivers’] average release point was 2.1 seconds. He was not going to give a chance for our guys to get going. That’s going to be a theme [against Miami]. Our job on the outside part of the field is be tighter and challenge some of those throws to give those guys that extra second to work. That’s something we have to address going forward.”

so let me get this right... scheme does not dictate how tight the DBs lineup, its up to them to decide for themselves?

It's pretty obvious that the entire philosophy on defense is "don't give up the big play". As a result, the underneath stuff, particularly in the middle of the field, is always wide open because the safeties are playing so far back they might as well be in a different stadium. That leaves the crappy LBs to cover underneath - and they can't. And the corners aren't much closer to the line than the safeties...leaving easy pitch-and-catch opportunities outside. As I've said, it's a very easy defense for a competent offense to beat. It's a bend-don't-break idea, but as we saw last year the better teams will break it. Major design flaws on his defense...MAJOR. We won't play losing teams like the Chargers and Jets every week, and it will get ugly - again - when we play winning teams.
Oh, and I love this line from Burke: “Verner has done a good job.”
So good that he didn't even play last week, despite how bad the secondary played?

Gotta just love that coachspeak. Only thing that would have re-enforced that would have been a little "from a practice standpoint Wannyism".

The whole fucking league throws the ball fast anymore. You'd think these idiots would have figured that out three years ago and adjusted. If you've got shitty coverage, you have to press. Otherwise you're paying guys to have a great ticket to watch (but not participate in) the action.

Watched NFL highlight of the Rams Patriots Super Bowl. Nobody stopped the Rams until that night. Patriots used press coverage. Disrupt the timing. We can't continue to give a clean release to the receivers

What is our scheme on defense? And why is it so bad?
Burke has a real shot to contribute to a god-awful season. Being he's a first time DC, learning on the job from week to week against veteran OCs.
If the Jets do fire Bowles, sign me up I want him back as DC as soon as fucking possible. He can feel free to shit can whatever scheme we think we are running, and replace it with a real, grown-up defense that works.

Looks like a bend-and-then-break defense, with a lot of potential to give up the big play.
They continue this trend against the Saints, and NO will put up 50 on them.

if you keep telling them to get tighter and they are not doing it - then sit them on the f'ing bench and play someone who will lineup as the scheme dictates. do the DBs (Maxwell) just not listen to Burke? if so, do something about it!
But Burke made clear more is needed from his defensive backs.
“One of more disappointing stats – we are close to giving up 80 percent completions,” he said. “Part of that is being more physical with the receivers and being in tighter coverage. Get one step closer – they probably hate me because I keep saying that. One more step for [Maxwell] might be getting his hands a little tighter.”

It's difficult for me to believe that the corners and safeties play so far back because of their own preference. WTF is the coaching staff doing??? Nothing this defense does makes any sense to me.
Re: Do the Phins play press coverage or not?
Okay lets be totally honest, Miami doesn't have ballhawking DB's. No matter how much the coaches want to say it they don't. Miami gives up too many big plays in the air and playing against the Saints it going to be hell. All of Miami DB are hard hitters besides TANKERSLEY but he ever dresses for games. First thing Miami needs to restructure their cap issue then find some DB's that can go after the ball.
