The 2017 Dolphins want to be up-tempo. Fast. No huddle.

“A lot of our offense is no huddle,” receiver Jarvis Landry said Thursday. “We just decide to slow it down. We’re not really a huddle team. We’re a no huddle team that decides to huddle when we want to. That’s a better way to put it.”

Last season you’ll recall the Dolphins decided they wanted to huddle most of the time. But the truth is coaches decided they had to huddle for the following reasons:

1. To protect the defense because after the up-tempo approach led to a bunch of three-and-outs, it put the defense on the field for 70-80 plays in games -- and that led to a lot of points by opponents.

2. To protect offensive players from themselves because there were just too many mistakes being made when the team was trying to go up-tempo. The offense was better, more efficient when it go rolled back and, yes, dumbed down.

This season, however, the Dolphins would like to try to go back to the original plan -- if not a full-time crazy up-tempo Peyton Manning Denver Broncos 2013-14 no huddle, then something less nutty but still more than last year.

The Dolphins want to press issue more. And they want to work the up-tempo, no-huddle thing well enough that they’re putting pressure on the opposing defenses rather than their own.

It should be fun to watch if it works.

(If it doesn’t work it will get shelved again).

So why do the Dolphins think they can consider doing what proved ineffective a year ago?

It begins with quarterback Jay Cutler. He’s been surprisingly good in practice running the no-huddle stuff.

...

(Just so you are aware, the Dolphins have not come out and announce they want to go no-huddle. That’s a big, shhh, secret. But here you understand they’ve been working on it a lot (based on what Christensen said). They’re thinking of themselves as this up-tempo team (based on what Landry said). And so even though they have shown just a little of it in the preseason, you’re starting to see a picture come into focus. Are you getting the clues?)

...

Remember, to be a no-huddle, up-tempo team is an intention at this stage. When the Dolphins try it, either after big plays or after a first-down or all the time, it has to work for the personality to stick.

If it doesn’t work, the Dolphins are not going to continue doing it for the sake of looking smart. It’s not smart to beat one’s head against concrete.

But if the no-huddle, up-tempo approach has success it could get expanded. It might become a thing. It might become the thing for the 2017 Miami Dolphins offense.

Same shit, different season. Sounds great on paper, and I'd love to see it happen. But we've heard the same damn thing every year since Bill Lazor first became OC, and every year the coaches scrap it. It works great if your defense can get off the field and your offense gets first downs. But if the defense is on the field all game and the offense has multiple three-and-outs, going up-tempo does nothing but shoot yourself in the foot.

At this stage, I have very little faith in the QB and OL and even less in the defense, so I think we'll end up seeing business as usual once Gase realizes that this team is simply not built to have an up-tempo offense. I hope I'm proven wrong, because I'd love to see an exciting, high-flying offense and a stifling defense - but I just don't see it working out that way.

I'm more hopeful than ever this can work this season. Totally hear your point, JMP.

To me, the biggest hope lies in Jay Cutler. He knows this offense well and can get the team to the line with the right play and timing. I really don't think Tanny could do that in year 1 - maybe he could have done it this year, but we won't know. Maybe we won't ever know.

Cutler, however, has done it.

This is a core Gase belief. He wants to run the no huddle and believes it will give him the best chance to win. What he did last year was against his belief, but after seeing the disaster of our 0-4 start he had no choice. To his credit, he salvaged the season and ran a respectable offense with a ground heavy attack. It's not what he wants though. He wants an up-tempo offense with a good ground attack but a threatening passing game also. We will see plenty of work for Thomas in the red zone too.

Totally agree we hear this all the time. This season seems to have the best chance of seeing it actually happen, the right conditions are aligned.

It depends on the defense. If they can't get off the field, running an up-tempo offense will hurt more than help. I'm not convinced that the D is up to the task.

In theory, we are built to attack on defense when protecting a lead. Especially in the wide 9 alignment. Something we rarely saw last year (I think the 2nd Jets game was one exception).

I have to agree with your concern. Burke is a 1st time coordinator, and we aren't exactly brimming with talent anywhere on defense. Plus we have stark weaknesses we've all seen and complained about.

The way this team is built, I think the up-tempo offense will only be effective if the team can jump out to an early lead.  Then, you force your opponent to be more one-dimensional and the Miami D can go into attack mode.

But, the problem here is two-fold:

One, the Miami offense - for whatever reason - usually starts games very slow.  Maybe that changes with Cutler, but who knows?  You get a lot of quick non-scoring drives early, and the up-tempo has to be abandoned.

Two, this Miami defense is very easy to gameplan against.  It is designed to generate pressure from the front 4, and limit big plays on the backend.  But, because the Phins have terrible coverage LBs and garbage at free safety, the middle of the field is generally wide open as soon the play starts.  Any competent offense should be able to kill the Phins in the middle of the field with quick passes, essentially limiting the effectiveness of the pass rush.  And then, as the DL is rushing the passer, it also creates running lanes across the board.  Couple that with no true MLB, and the problems on D just get compounded.  It's a weak scheme with weak personnel at key spots...not a good combination.

I don't know...I want to think that things are different, but on paper at least I see the same exact issues on defense as last season.  And the offense is essentially the same, except that we now have a QB that knows the offense better - but commits more turnovers and is known for poor decision-making.

love this. its like you guys are fighting for my aqua and orange soul. i read white1 and he's got me drinking the kool-aid, but then JMP brings me back down to earth. i wanna believe, but i've been fooled so many times before.

none of us know what will happen this Sunday (and in the season beyond), but we optimistically hope for one thing, yet realistically expect something else.

I wish I could share white's optimism. I remember the days when I thought - hell, expected the Phins to take on all comers and emerge victorious. But I've been beaten down so many times, I'm numb. I can't let this team fool me into believing anymore. Expect the worst - that's where this team has taken me. I'll be very happy during games when I'm proven wrong, but it's much easier for me to set the bar low. I hate being "that guy", but it is what it is.

Last year was a pleasant surprise overall, but there were WAY too many times that the offense and defense looked like shit, and getting blown away by every good team we faced just wasn't fun. I just don't see this current team being any better - and they may be worse.

Speaking of Bill Lazor, he's apparently the new OC for the Bengals now. That should be fun Laughing

It sure is funny how the no-huddle offense has been a thing for 30 years now, and yet teams still hardly ever run it scratch Everybody loves to talk about running it, until they actually try.

As I mentioned above, it's all bullshit.  It's something teams say.  Too much media.  Coaches would do well to be more like Belchingchicken and shut the hell up. Or conversely, be like Shula and say many words, without saying anything.
