Dolphins LB Lawrence Timmons reinstated today and will play Sunday versus the Saints, per source.

I guess this is good news, but I don't really see how it helps the defense all that much. Our run D has been OK, and that's Timmons's strength. The biggest issue on D is pass coverage, and Timmons sucks in coverage just like every other LB on the team.

I'm sure he's highly motivated, considering he doesn't want to be a Dolphin at the least, and/or is mentally unstable currently.

They should let Timmons wear a Steelers jersey...that might make him feel better.

One positive, I believe he's the best LB with pass rush ability, so if he can help add pressure there that could protect our secondary.

I will admit I'm reaching. But that's the best I've got. There. I said it.

LMAO!

So Timmons who hasn't been around for 21/2 weeks gets a start? That's a different team concept!

We don't even blitz the LBs much, but yeah, Timmons is the best we have by far. Just need to be careful against QBs that get the ball out fast - like Brees this week - because there's already enough holes underneath in this D. If Timmons doesn't get to the QB on a blitz, that's yet another open space for the QB to target.

I really hope Burke decides to tighten up the coverage this week. If we play 10 yards off this week, Brees might complete 40 passes. Seriously.

Very interesting - glad to know that we can cut Timmons next season without much cap damage. I have a feeling he'll be one and done in Miami.

But Armando doesn't really offer an explanation as to why the Timmons contract changed. Was there a clause about being suspended? I don't know...but either way it now seems like this is a much better deal for the Phins than the one Timmons initially signed.

Timmons is back because the LBers suck. talent (or in this case talent relative to what they currently have) always outweighs everything else. had this been a lesser player, he would've been cut outright.

but there is one guy who is not happy about Timmons return...

Timmons’ return was bad news for fellow linebacker Justin March-Lillard, whom the Dolphins waived to clear up a roster spot.

In our base D, I'd like to see Allen inside and Timmons at strong-side. But, I suspect Hull will stay in the middle and Allen will be relegated to backup duties. I expect Timmons to stay on the field in the nickel with the MLB (Hull or Allen) going to the bench.

Or - do you put Timmons in the middle and leave Allen at SOLB?

I really like the idea of Allen at MLB - looks like he's got decent speed and can play sideline to sideline. Timmons has lost a step, and at this stage I think he can be more effective as an edge-setter on the outside. The coaches seem to love Hull, so I think he'll keep his starting job.

Not sure how Anthony fits in this D, other than experienced depth.

Unfortunately, we still don't have an LB that can cover...major ball dropped by the Phins this offseason.

Agree on Allen, maybe he's not ready for significantly more snaps but I'm encouraged that we may have found a keeper with a UDFA. Nice find by the scouts.

points 1, 2, and 4 pretty much all say the same thing...the Phins desperately need Timmons.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/dave-hyde-blog/fl-sp-hyde5-why-timmons-20170927-story.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DaveHyde-blog+%28Dave+Hyde+%7C+Sun+Sentinel+blogs%29

but the last point is my favorite - and would be pretty funny if it wasn't so sadly true.

Hey, the entire Dolphins roster went AWOL for the Jets game. Given that, why punish Timmons any more for going AWOL the Charger game.

I can't read the full Hyde article because of the stupid Sun Sentinel 'pay to read' plan, but my sense from seeing the headline and reading other Dolfans' thoughts around the web is that many people are viewing Timmons as some sort of savior.  Unfortunately, I expect that these people are setting themselves up for disappointment.  Timmons isn't an elite pass rusher, and he isn't good in coverage.  He will certainly help with on-field leadership and veteran experience, but I don't think he's a game-changing playmaker that will transform this defense.  And obviously he's not going to help with Gase's "garbage" offense.

So yeah, it's cool to have Timmons on board I guess...but I really don't think he's going to make much of a positive impact in terms of how good or bad this defense plays.  And that's assuming his heart is even in it...which is questionable.

I have found a way around this. If you pull up an article and very quickly stop it from loading completely, you can trick it. The key is being very quick to stop the loading before you get the subscription notice. I do the same for Herald and it works most of the time.

From what I can see. LB is our weakness. Timmons is in shape and wants to play. He addressed the team and the players want him back. Enough for me.

That used to work for me too, but haven't had much luck lately. I'll keep trying...

I think our weakness is the entire defensive scheme.  It's just not working.  I think the biggest issue is how far back the DBs are playing.  The CBs are consistently playing at least 7 yards off the receivers, and the safeties seem to be miles away from the line of scrimmage.  It's just too easy for QBs to complete passes against that, and Timmons won't help with that.

If you watched the Patriots-Steelers playoff game last season, you saw the Patriots completing short passes against Timmons over and over, all game.  So I don't think he's going to solve our coverage issues.

By the way, Maualuga is practicing this week too, so it's possible that we see a completely new LB corps on Sunday.  I don't know that it will be any better, but at least it'll be a change.

JMP that would be great to see them both play. Kiko and Hull are always near the ball and are smart but they are both small and seam to be manhandled all over the field.

Kiko just can't get off blocks. The second someone gets their hands on him, he's done.

Hull is better than I expected against the run. But he's just not athletic enough to handle faster, more dynamic backs and receivers.

So, Timmons held a press conference today.  He spoke and answered questions for less than three minutes.  Pretty much, he said four things, over and over and over (and over): "I'm happy to be here.", "I'm happy to be a Miami Dolphin.", "I talked to the coach.", "I'm a football player."  Don't even bother watching the video, because literally, that's all he said, again and again.  All while looking like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world.  I showed my wife, and she said he looked like he was going to cry.

What a fucking joke.  This press conference was absolutely disgraceful.  Timmons looked like he was miserable, and he wasted everybody's time by saying absolutely nothing.  He went AWOL, got a slap on the wrist, and in his first public appearance he acts like a smug asshole.  Screw this guy.  Seriously, he may be a Dolphin (for now), but I can't root for this assclown.

Here's an article about the press conference, and if you want to watch the video it is also on this page:
