I thought he was a wasted pick last year but I think he needs to be on the field. Tearing it up tonight!

I haven't watched the game yet, but looks like he had a good game. Of course, he was playing against a bunch of guys that will never set foot on an NFL field again, but good to see him finally making plays. I really don't see him ever becoming a big part of the offense, aside from a couple of special packages and gadget plays, but hopefully he'll be able to take advantage of the opportunities he does get.

You don't become a D-1 schools all time receiver without talent. What shocks me is how physical Grant is playing.

There's a lot of talented school record holders that never got to play a snap in the NFL. Grant almost played himself out of the league with all his fumbles and drops, but he's worked really hard this offseason and has a chance now to make some noise. If he can play at a more consistent level and eliminate (or at least cut down) on the bobbles and drops, he can be a valuable role player for the Phins.

Hard to imagine him getting many snaps on offense with all the receivers ahead of him, but like I said he can at least be involved in some specific packages and trick plays.

I still expect Grant to get crushed at some point and end up on IR...I just don't trust tiny players at this level. But hopefully he'll add some excitement to this team before that happens.

Leontee Carroo was brought in to be Landry's replacement but I just don't see him stepping up. Could Grant fill those shoes? Also, Grant is the fastest player on the team. Has clocked as low as 4.33. 4.38 at combine. He needs the touches. Could really make the team dynamic with him, Stills, and Parker. Any of those three can go the distance !

Carroo looks like a waste at this point. It would be much easier to move on from Landry if had shown anything, but he simply hasn't. I'd like to at least see Carroo get some red zone opportunities because of his size, but that hasn't really happened yet.

I don't think Grant could ever be an every-down player...just too small. The coaches will have to pick their spots with him.

Grant is very intriguing because of his Speed and quickness in short spaces. We haven't had that type of player ever. His size is kinda what makes it the most intriguing. I think that moving him outside in preseason is one thing but entirely different in the regular season against 1's.

Ideally i would like to see him as the 3rd down back like Sproles and Woodhead. I don't see him getting a whole lot of carries but i can see fear in the eyes of LB's thinking "shit this guy out runs me by a second". I think it would really create a whole lot of exciting things if he lined up in the backfield

He seem like a straight line type of runner not someone that can cut in and out of breaks and find the hole that is necessary

the first thing you see is his speed but, check his highlight tape he has quick feet. His stature makes it impossible to track him through the whole play and limits his physicality at the line. Putting him in the backfield would limit how physical teams can get because he'll have a running start towards the line of scrimmage.

If he can keep his hands on the ball and avoid full-on contact, he could be quite the play maker.

I don't think he's going to get many snaps on offense...maybe 2-3 plays a game, if that. Not much playing time behind Landry, Stills and Parker, and Gase only very rarely runs 4-WR sets. Grant will have to make the most of any opportunities he gets.

I think he will take a big step this year. I think he has shown some improvement in the preaseason and I think his combination of size and speed is perfect for at least 5 or 6 plays a game. I think he can solidify his spot on the team through special teams but, if he is used properly this offense can be deadly.

The ceiling for Grant is a solid player not great but good, not super but solid. Dare I say "Ginn". His mark will be on special teams but his small stature could lead to some busted coverages.

Keep in mind that all the big plays Grant made in the offseason were against 3s and 4s. We have never seen him make plays against NFL starters on offense.

And again, unless Gase completely changes his offense, we're not going to see many 4-WR sets - which means that Grant isn't going to get many opportunities. They could line him up in the backfield, like you suggested Umix, but that means making him do something he's never done - and it also means you're taking Ajayi off the field. I just don't see many snaps for him. The key is for him to hit home runs on those limited snaps.

With a guy like Grant, it's all about how you get him the ball, which means if you're going to try and single him up or use him in plays, he needs to get snaps so the other defense doesn't just key on him immediately when he gets into the game. If he can only get in on situational plays, he'll make very few big plays because the other team will just take him away for one play out of 25. He needs to be on the field consistently to be effective, and if he can't be, then he'll be useless. That's on him, to be able to maintain consistent play so he can stay on the field.

If he can't, he's just another really fast, shifty guy that looked great in college because of the wide talent array.

It's funny but I agree with JMP, Degarmo, and myself......that drives me nuts. It's crazy but from JMP's point of view, i get it. Giving him snaps really hurts the production of someone else. Degarmo hit it on the head, you can't just limit his snaps on offense because the defense will key him up. I take all of that into consideration and the best thing I feel they should do is help him keep his jersey clean and get him in space as soon as possible.

The fact of the matter is if we can get down to something that incorporates all three things that we laid out Grant could be effective.

The thing is, you're not going to put Landry, Parker or Stills on the bench all that often, and of course Ajayi is going to be on the field most of the time - and then there's Gase's boy toy Julius Thomas. And I think Carroo would even be in more often than Grant, based on his size and skillset. I just don't see where Grant is going to get snaps - again, aside from special packages that might be used once or twice a game.

Just throw Grant some screens. Do the Fins finally do screens now? Run a double screen so teams can't just key exclusively on Grant, and only do it once or twice a game. Maybe give him the ball on a reverse every now and then as well, but throw in fake reverses to him too. Gase is supposed to be this creative offensive genius, right?

The Dolphins haven't been a good screen team since Shula was coach.  But yeah, Grant can run some bubble screens (one of Gase's favorite plays apparently, just like Bill Lazor before him) and reverses.  Get the guy in space with room to run.

not to drag up and old thread, but this us uncanny - its as if JMP was inside Gase's mind.

What about giving more playing time to receiver Jakeem Grant (who has played four offensive snaps in two games) and running back Kenyan Drake, who has played 22?

Gase said in the first two games, he installed packages for both second-year players but worried if inserting them would “throw us off” because “we didn’t have a great rhythm. Do we put different guys in there? Does that jump start us or hurt us?”

He said his other consideration is that it’s “hard to pull” Ajayi or the Dolphins’ top three receivers off the field.

For all the praise Gase gets for being an offensive genius, he's really not very creative. We use the same 2 or 3 personnel groupings almost every down, with a handful of formations. That's fine if it's working - but clearly, it isn't. Time to try something different. I have my doubts that Grant will do anything on offense against real NFL talent, but at least give him a shot. We're getting very little from our "superstar" receiving corps so far, so maybe Grant can provide a spark. Why not at least try???

As for Drake, my guess is that he still hasn't learned to block. Until he does that, he'll take a backseat to Williams.

from the same article...

Christensen said the Dolphins are seeing a lot of “eight-man fronts. We are getting people loading the box, which is no surprise. We didn’t block them well. They out-physicaled us.”

so if teams are stacking 8 in the box, then that leave 3 in coverage. how come our 3 WRs (one who just got paid big time, one that wants to get paid big time and one who is a 1st rounder supposedly breaking out) can't seem to beat one-on-one coverage?

i mean, the Phins two deep, press coverage seems to get abused by 2nd and 3rd string WRs, why can't our "super trio" do anything?

That depends on Gase. He doesn't seem like a coach that will setup a play in his playbook just for a certain player.

Yep. I get the feeling that if the Dolphins had Tyreek Hill instead of Jakeem Grant, Gase would use him the same way he uses Grant: he'd be a returner only and not get any snaps on offense. I'm not saying Grant could be as good as Hill, but if the guy is on the team you might as well give him a chance to play. It's very frustrating as a fan to see other teams getting big-time production from similar players.
