Game 6 thoughts: Jets at Dolphins Empty Game 6 thoughts: Jets at Dolphins

Post by JMP Sun Oct 22, 2017 4:39 pm

The Dolphins spent 3 quarters getting thoroughly manhandled and outplayed by the Jets, before finally waking up in the 4th quarter and pulling out a dramatic 31-28 victory. The Jets took a 28-14 lead into the 4th quarter, but the Phins rallied behind backup QB Matt Moore to tie it up about midway through the 4th, and won late thanks to a bone-headed play by the Jets.

With the game tied and the Jets getting the ball deep in their own end with just 47 second left, the Jets inexplicably threw the ball downfield and got picked by Phins’ corner Bobby McCain. Cody Parker then kicked the game-winning 39-yard FG.

The game started with both teams scoring on their opening drives, as the Dolphins finally scored a TD in the first half this season. The first half saw the Dolphins playing poor defense, giving up tons of yardage on screens and allowing the Jets to score 2 TDs against an absolutely toasted rookie Cordrea Tankersley. The Phins had no running game, as Ajayi was repeatedly swarmed in the backfield. The Phins had just 25 rushing yards in the first half. Jets’ QB Josh McCown had over 10 yards a completion on his first 7 completions.

The Miami offensive line played arguably their worst game of the season, as Dolphin QBs were absolutely pounded all game and the run game was non-existent. The Jets entered the game with zero sacks on the season, but picked up 3 today along with numerous pressures. Jay Cutler got hit hard all game, and actually got knocked out of the game with a chest injury. Backup Matt Moore came in and took some hits as well, but led his team to the comeback win.

The Dolphin defense was terrible for the first three quarters, particularly against the pass, allowing tons of yards and big plays. Fortunately, they rallied in the 4th to hold the Jets scoreless in the final quarter. Cam Wake had a couple of big sacks, and Rey Maualuga and Reshad Jones were very active.

On offense, TE Julius Thomas finally showed signs of life, with 3 big catches – one a beautiful one-handed grab. Fellow TE Anthony Fasano caught his first passes of the season, including a TD. Kenny Stills had a couple of TDs and made the play of the game on a 36-yard circus catch on the opening drive, catching a tipped pass as he was on the ground. Jarvis Landry had a TD and some clutch 4th quarter catches. Matt Moore played well, despite a bad INT. He definitely has more of a gunslinger attitude than Cutler.

Overall, it was an ugly game for the Phins – until the 4th quarter, where they dominated. The Phins won with a strong passing game, and they won despite horrific performances by the OL and defense. The Dolphins now stand at 4-2 and are in great position heading into 4 winnable games against the spiraling Ravens and inconsistent Raiders, Panthers and Bucs. Hard to believe, but this team could be 7-2 heading into a key week 12 matchup at New England.

Hero of the Game: Kenny Stills, for being a big-time playmaker

Goat of the Game: the entire OL for a disgustingly awful effort

Forgot to mention - Laremy Tunsil left the game with an apparent knee injury (I think it was fairly early in the 3rd quarter?). Surprisingly, Jesse Davis played most of the game at LT in relief. Davis gave up a few pressures, but given the circumstances it's hard to complain.

I'd also add that Matt Moore, warts and all, should be the QB moving forward. He offers much more big-play ability than Cutler.

BTW if the Jets all of a sudden go on a big losing streak that lasts possibly until the end of the season, I will be convinced that someone told them they better start tanking in the 4th quarter of this game.

If I'm being honest, my dislike of Matt Moore probably prevented me from listing him as a "hero of the game". He should get honorable mention, at the very least.

I never disliked Moore, but as you know I never thought he was all that either. Up until last season he was basically the king of meaningless late season wins for teams already eliminated from the playoffs. But when someone changes I am fully capable of changing my view of them.

From the espn.com game recap, my one stop shop for what happens sportswise these days. Sums up millennials perfectly.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/recap?gameId=400951598

There were signs at the end of a Jets meltdown. Receiver Robby Anderson angrily spiked his helmet in the final seconds, and after the game there was shouting in the locker room behind closed doors.

Awww...poor widdle Robby Crying or Very sad But earlier, when everything was going his way he was all about the positivity of course, because that's how millennials are until any sort of adversity strikes.

GETTING COMFORTABLE: Anderson celebrated his 18-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter by joining the crowd.

After Anderson made the grab, he ran through the end zone, leaped over the retaining wall and took a seat in a cushy first-row chair, his feet propped on the wall. Fans around him laughed even though the score left Miami behind 14-7.

He who laughs last, etc.

Somehow you've done it. You've convinced me to go over to your point of view.

Seriously, give yourself a few dozen pats on the back, because you just accomplished something on a similar scale as curing polio, inventing the internet, etc.

Now that doesn't mean I'll suddenly start actually watching games or devoting more than the bare minimum of thought to the NFL, but as far as this team's concerned I'm now actually...confident they'll be making the playoffs again. Not cocky, mind you, not even thinking they're that good, but admitting that they always seem to find a way to just barely get the job done, to the point where it's become their trademark.

It's all fine and well to have miracle comebacks, but where was this "grit" and "toughness" when the Jets curbstomped them for 3 quarters??

You guys keep claiming you want this team to have an identity. Well, they got one. This is it. And as far as I'm concerned there are far worse identities to have than 'team who plays like shit for 2-3 quarters but wins anyway". Who would you rather be a fan of right now, the Fins or the Falcons, who never met a blown lead they didn't like?

It's not even a matter of this being sustainable. Who cares, as long as it gets them into the playoffs instead of yet another 6-8 win season?

Biggest difference between Moore and Cutler right now, Moore wants to play. Cutler is done.

hmm, Pouncey gets knocked out of the game and Ajayi rattles off 130 yards with a 5 yard average (Falcons game). Pouncey makes a miraculous recovery from concussion and you have this o-line performance against the Jets. Coincidence?

That's an excellent point. There's no doubt that Pouncey is playing the worst football of his career.

Yesterday it was everyone, though. Bushrod was absolutely brutal - I have no idea why he's still starting. And I saw pressures given up by Tunsil, Davis, Steen and James too. The scary part is, the Jets have no real pass rushers and still managed to get almost non-stop pressure all game. It really is amazing that the passing game produced as well as it did yesterday. Credit the receivers for getting open and the QBs for hanging in the pocket despite the pressure.

It'll be interesting to see how the OL holds up against the Ravens this week - a team that always pushes us around. The Ravens aren't particularly good right now, but the Phins never seem to match-up well against them.

One thing I forgot to mention: the field conditions.  For all the money Ross poured into this stadium, it's an embarrassment that the field is one of the (if not the) worst in the NFL.  The field was crap for the Canes game on Saturday, and it was an absolute disaster yesterday.  I don't know what the solution is, but something's gotta be done.  Just a matter of time till a key Dolphins' player is lost for the season due to the garbage field.

It's a valid point, but IMO it shows this team is trending in the right direction. We were nearly shut out in a horrible game 4 weeks ago. Yesterday against the same squad, we put up 31 points and showed the deep passing game we've been waiting for all year.

The offensive line is definitely a weak point, we knew that going in. I think we get Larsen back in a couple weeks, that will upgrade us at left guard because Steen is just not good.

There's no fixing Bushrod, unfortunately. Tunsil continues to piss me off, he needs to step up big time. Right now he's not playing near the level Albert was playing at. I really don't know how James is playing, he's been getting positive reviews from the beat writers.

Are we trending in the right direction? We did win the past two games - but in those games we really only played three good quarters of football. The other five quarters were awful. I guess I'm just not accepting that the league is so watered down now that bad teams have winning records. Maybe I need to change my definitions of 'good' and 'bad' with the current state of the NFL. In the NFL I remember, this Dolphins team would very likely be 0-6 right now...but in 2017 that no longer matters because almost every team sucks!

Anyway, I keep hearing how good James is, but whenever I key on him I see him whiffing on blocks.

Yeah honestly I don't know about James. Hard to envision a long term contract after his rookie deal is up. He's just underwhelmed, but I also can't say I'm really staring at him all game to watch his level of play.

I think on offense we are trending in the right direction, being we were so bad early in the season.

Again, I'm just not sure our offensive line can be "fixed" midseason. It just looks to me the talent is not there at Guard, and the tackles are average at best with too many lapses and bad plays.

I LOVED the screen passes yesterday, it's about damn time. That's one way to neutralize a pass rush and it actually worked.
