Gase's offense in year 2

Post by JMP on Mon Oct 30, 2017 8:59 am

I watched a decent amount of the Eagles game yesterday and was very impressed with that offense. They are phenomenal on 3rd down and everybody seems to be on the same page. The offense looks like a well-oiled machine.

It made me wonder...

The Eagles have a second-year head coach with a second-year QB and they added some new pieces to the offense this offseason.

The Dolphins have a second-year head coach with two veteran QBs experienced in the offense and they added very little to the offense this offseason.

The Eagles are averaging 29 points a game.

The Dolphins are averaging 13 points a game.

How is it that Doug Pederson and Adam Gase are heading in completely different directions? Seems like we hired the wrong coach two years ago...one is a legit head coach and the other is a fraud.

I'm sick and tired of all the excuses and finger-pointing...Gase is the offensive genius and this offensive roster was built by him. Let's see some damn results.

I can tell you right now one reason: Wentz.

Already in year two, he looks like he's a better QB than either Tannehill OR Cutler. Matt Moore isn't even in this conversation.

The worse part IMO is that our offense appears to have actually REGRESSED since last season.

Now, we can also point to the offensive line, which by all accounts is playing worse than last season. We also heard there was a huge argument in the front office this offseason about what to do at guard. The decision reached was to go cheap there, which obviously blew up in our faces. I would be interested to know where Gase was on that argument.

In any case I agree with you. If the offense isn't working, and you know which players aren't doing it right, either trade or release them. Fix it. I don't care what it takes, just fix it.

Yep, and that's the part that really makes me put the blame on Gase. He wanted Cutler and Thomas, and he was at least partially responsible for the OL (given that he has final say on the roster). The offense is MUCH worse than last season, and that's with a $10 million QB hand-picked by Gase. None of the players seem to know what they're doing, the team is never prepared, the playcalling is very predictable - and so far Gase doesn't seem to know how to fix it. It's great that we have a winning record right now, but 13 points a game is just not going to work. Gase needs to stop making excuses and start finding answers - period.

And yes, Wentz looks fantastic. He's made a collosal leap from year one to year two. That's what great coaching and hard work can do. Of course, our head coach has never turned a young QB into a star, so who knows if the draft will even help Miami even if a QB is drafted early.

Tunsil is still adapting to OT as he spent the first year at OG.
RG is a hole - and i'm not sure Larsen would've made that much of a difference.
It was a mistake to rely on Pouncey returning to form.
Bushrod is at the end of his career.
James is inconsistent.

Not addressing the interior of the line was a HUGE mistake.

neither Cutler (should still be retired) or Moore are nearly as good as what we hoped Tannehill would be (and that wasn't even a certainty).

Landry has checked out after not getting his contract extension.
Stills got paid and is in cruise control.
Parker is fragile and i'm not convinced he that hard of a worker.
Fasano is at the end of his career.
Thomas isn't what he was in Denver.

and i think Ajayi is starting to get frustrated and wearing down after having to make his own running room.

that is what is wrong with the offense.

oh yea, and a passing offense based on out patterns within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage isn't going to get it done.

This is the biggest issue right here for Miami besides the fact that it looks like Miami players are not buying into Gase anymore. Miami cannot find a good OL if it was right in front of their face. Another issue is that Cutler is not motivating the team at all. You are the leader on the offense and if you are acting like you don't care then your players will. Miami did so well with Tannehill out there because he was getting them pumped. Miami shouldn't have won a lot of those games last year but Tannehill was in their ear, making them want to win, that is not Cutler. I know yall seen him out there non-responsive when the team isn't moving down the field. He isn't out there yelling at the players to get themselves together. If the leaders are scared the team is as well.

This failure falls directly in the lap of the front office, (which gase should be included it), because I think he has ultimate say so on roster. Put it this way, if he does not want someone, they will not be here, and if he does want someone, they are acquired.

By not really addressing the OL, they have set the tone for this season. By misjudging the talent, or lack there of on the players on the OL, it has crippled us. You can not bring in mediocre-at-best OL'men and expect to get anything other than mediocre results. Did they really think that JAG's like Bushrod, Steen, Davis, Young, Asiata, expecting pouncey to be healthy, would get the job done?

You can clearly see that Ajayi is getting frustrated at having to make a 3 yard gain just to get back to the LOS.

Like gase said, who is out there? Who do you turn to? Problem is, HE handpicked these under-performing guys, so look in the mirror.

Calling his team out in the media is not the way to go for me. Yes, they need to play better, but I think that belongs behind closed doors. You want the team to play for you. I don't see how calling them out in the media accomplishes that.

This locker room is on the verge of a revolt if things do not get better. One or two more losses like the Ravens could cause it.

Damn, scot, get out of my head! LOL Agree completely.

Like I said in another thread, it looks like we'll have to rebuild the offense in year 3 of the Gase era...and to me, that's unacceptable. That's a major screw-up. By year 3, the team should be rolling and we should be adding pieces to get us over the top. Instead, we're looking at potentially a major rebuild. FAIL. And if the rebuild includes dumping what little talent we do have - like Landry - then it's even worse.
