Phins hire Bears' OC Dowell Loggains

Post by JMP on Tue Jan 02, 2018 7:03 pm

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article192636519.html

The club on Tuesday brought former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains to its team facility with the idea of seeing if he’s a fit to upgrade the offensive coaching staff.

Loggains spent the day with head coach Adam Gase and the two discussed Loggains taking on a significant workload in preparing the offense week to week. That work must include raising the Dolphins offense from its doldrums of the past seasons. The Dolphins averaged 17.6 points per game and finished 28th in points scored last season.

HELL YEAH, BABY!!!  We're getting an offensive coordinator from a garbage team that scored even fewer points than we did the past two seasons!  Not only that, but this is the same guy that was QB coach for future Hall of Famers Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer in 2014, and Dolfan favorite Jay Cutler in 2015!  He worked with Gase in that 2015 season, so you know he's good...after all, Cutler was amazing that season!!!    cheers  cheers  cheers

YES!!!  This organization really knows how to hire top-notch coaches.  I'm going to start looking at airfare and hotel for Super Bowl 53!!!!    sunny

(sarcasm over)

In all seriousness, Loggains has been with the Bears for three seasons - one year as QB coach and two as OC.  In that time the Bears have won a grand total of 14 games, ranking 23, 28 and 29 in points scored (the last two with him as OC).

Prior to Chicago, Loggains was in Tennessee, where he coached more crappy QBs for a couple of seasons before becoming OC in 2012-13.  While Loggains was with the Titans, here is where his team ranked in points scored:
2010: 17
2011: 21
2012: 23
2013: 19

And in 2014 as Browns QB coach, his team was ranked 27 in points scored.

So, yeah, this guy hasn't been successful anywhere in the NFL but we're supposed to believe that his guidance and input are going to make Gase's crappy offense great???   scratch

It's so difficult to stay interested in this dumpster fire of a team.

Gase likes to be around people that are familiar to him instead of getting people that can make this team better. We saw that with Culter and now this guy. Another dead end coach that needs to go next year.

I'll take a contrarian view for a minute, against my mood and all instincts, but here it goes.

First of all, this is the risk with a young head coach. He doesn't have much of a network, so it's rare you'll see proven coaching talent hired, especially early on. The Rams appear to be an exception, as hiring Wade Phillips to run their defense was an excellent hire.

Second, our offense is so, so broken that a change really must be made. It doesn't matter to me who the next guy is, or what his track record is. He's been an offensive coordinator for a couple of years and under John Fox, who has a defense background. Hopefully he is more prepared than Clyde Christensen to take more off of Gase plate and build a cohesive run/pass system along with the offensive line blocking schemes to make it all work.

I will agree that his track record leaves much to be desired. However, he's only 37 years old so the arrow is still pointing up as far as what he can become if he survives as an OC in the league.

In any case like I said earlier, we need to change something, might as well hire someone to try and fix and run this offense like a unit.

A couple of points we haven't touched on yet:

- Ok good, we are changing SOMETHING on offense in an effort to fix what is clearly broken.  What are we going to do on defense? John Fox is available, is a great defensive mind, and if he fails to land a HC job he would be an excellent addition on that side of the ball. Does Burke survive a disastrous season (the 2nd in a row) for our defense, with busted coverages happening all season continuing right on through week 17?

- What is this going to do for Tannehill? Another OC coming in, and yet another change for him to absorb and master.  Will the "system" and terminology remain the same? If so, then what is really expected to improve?

I don't see Burke staying at the end of the season. Miami on the other hand could do the same thing that they are doing with this OC and allow Burke stay since Gase is use to him. But if he stays he will go at the same time as Gase.

Another gase yes-man. gase does not want anyone around him that gives the slightest hint of a challenge to his authority. Thats why he hires burke, christionsen and now most likely this guy. So, now you have yet another tanny-excuse.

When next year flops and it is time for exit interviews, gase will tell ross something to the effect of "Boss, you know ryan was out for almost 2 full seasons and came back and had to learn yet another offense that our new OC installed. These things take time. You know, we are close, really close to doing what you want here boss. If I can just bring in a couple more ex-bear coaches, I really think that will put us over the hump and get us to the point that you want. After all, we are close".

ross: But adam, you saw when I told the media "I want to fucking win". I meant it, really, I did. I know the fans believe it. I do, I really do. But, if you say we are close, then I guess if you just need a couple more yes-men, never were, ex-bear coaches to put us over the hump, then by all means. let's bring them in. What about drafting a franchise QB? stevie, look, we are close with ryan, he's only been around 7 years now. These things take time. The fans will wait and be patient. They love me. They do they really do".

I have no issue with the Phins bringing in someone to help on offense. But - if it's just going to be a Gase buddy that's just a figurehead OC that isn't calling plays and is just being a "yes" man - then it's a waste of time. Clyde Christensen certainly didn't help, and he's a helluva lot more experienced than Loggains. As long as Gase is calling plays and ignoring the rest of the team on gameday, it's going to fail. And why must we keep adding coaches from garbage organizations????

Nothing's going to change on defense. The coaches and players think everything is just fine as is. Fox would be an excellent hire, but there's no chance...Gase won't bring in anyone that can challenge him.

As for Tannehill, this won't impact him at all IMO. It's going to be Gase's system and he'll still call plays. I think anyone we bring in is simply going to fill the Clyde Christensen role and won't have a real impact on the scheme. Interesting that we're interviewing guys for Clyde's job while Clyde is still with the Phins...seems a bit sketchy.

Of course, we also need a legit OL coach, unless Dave DeGuglielmo gets the job.

It doesnt matter who they hire. The issue is that they are really hiring anyone at all. Think about this, if you are a QB whisperer, Why do you need to hire help on offense? We don’t have an OL coach, Why not just say you are bringing in this guy to coach the OL? Hiring someone, bringing in someone, looking at someone does not bring clarity to a murky situation! It fact it makes it even cloudier. Granted we are not all supposed to know the inner thourghts of the organization but, The bigges thing about this team that could be easily fixed is to not send mixed messages to the team. When players and coaches are uncertain about their jobs, the team doesn’t perform! The proof is in the 6-10! Clarity and deliberate actions is what MIami needs. Not a coach trying to figure shit out!

well it sounds like that he is hired and Gase stated that the leaders of the team needed to step up but who is really leading Miami to victory?

Well, let's see...

Back in 2001, we had a clueless HC who concentrated on only one side of the ball, refused to pick a QB to compete with his buddy/plan for the future, and kept filling his staff with spares from the Bears, where he used to coach.

Wow, what progress we've made in just 17 short years!

Yep, Loggains is the new OC. Christensen may stay with the team in another capacity.

This article is great:
http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2018/01/03/adam-gase-runs-dolphins-offense-but-oc-clyde-christensen-gets-booted/

Clyde Christensen is losing his job over all the bad plays he didn’t call.

Christensen was the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator the last two seasons to help Adam Gase in his first NFL head-coaching gig. Now he’s out as Gase turns to Dowell Loggains to replace him after Miami spent another year in the bottom 10 of the league in total offense.

Who’s to blame for all the “garbage offense,” to use Gase’s term, South Florida has endured the last two years? Not Christensen.

Gase runs the offense, something 11 other head coaches do, and he’s relied on Christensen mostly as an advisor. Gase calls the plays and works directly with the quarterbacks.

...

It takes a lot of faith in Gase to believe this is the move that’s going to get Miami’s offense rolling, which is something people down here have craved more than anything. It’s not just that the Dolphins are perpetually mediocre, it’s that they’re boring. They haven’t had a top-10 offense since 2001.

Since Gase took over the Dolphins, they’ve scored the ninth-fewest points, gained the sixth-fewest yards, committed the seventh-most turnovers, posted the second-worst third-down conversion rate and ranked 18th in passer rating. Something definitely needs to change, and apparently he thinks this is it.

Christensen is getting thrown under the bus for Gase's pathetic offense. And now we're getting a still-wet-behind-the years OC with a history of coaching crappy QBs and running crappy offenses....and Gase is still calling the plays. What a joke.

All the new OC has to do is run the offense in practice. That's all he's been brought in for.

Developing/tweaking the offense to get better production should be the first priority. Putting coaches in place is part of it but my point earlier is to clearly define the roles of everyone on the staff. Gase needs to realize that coaching doesn’t have to be about reinventing the wheel. He doesn’t have to be the OC/HC. He NEEDS to be the Head Coach. Coordinators is what you do when you aren’t the head coach. I think at this point he is putting too much emphasis on one part of the team when he needs to pay attention to all of it. Unless the Coordinators are calling the plays then you are not giving your attention to the whole team that you could. Bringing in another guy and not giving that guy the responsibility of calling plays just adds to another shitty situation.

If only they'd waited a little while, they could've had...David Shula. And the local media could've waxed poetic about it, for various reasons.

Shula would have been a good fit but he would probably wanted to call some plays as well. Gase doesn't like other coaches that contribute to the play calling or decision making

Yeah, Mike Shula is a playcaller. No way he works as an errand boy under Gase.

no words from me are necessary on this one...

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article193816064.html

New Dolphins offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains was subjected to criticism from Chicago media last season, not surprising considering the Bears were 30th in total offense.

From a Nov. 15 column from David Baugh of The Chicago Tribune: “Offensive coordinators who let defenses dictate who plays end up losing more than football games. The best ones create mismatches that benefit their team. The worst ones appear miscast in their roles because they fear them. After 25 games on the job, Loggains looks more like the latter, overly cautious without being obviously creative. In sports, fearful athletes and coaches who believe that only bad things can happen to them usually are right. The tentative Bears offense is less threatening than a holiday invitation from in-laws.

“This game is about matchups and that’s the first thing we look at when we decide who’s going to be in the game,” Loggains explained, feebly.

It has been a tough week to be the Bears’ overmatched 37-year-old offensive coordinator. On Sunday, FOX analyst Chris Spielman, a former NFL linebacker, labeled the Bears offense predictable — “Run, run, pass,” Spielman said. On Wednesday [Nov. 14], ESPN.com released its ranking of the NFL’s 32 best play-callers — and Loggains finished 32nd.

While Loggains called the plays in Chicago, Gase is expected to continue to call plays for the Dolphins.
