Just read this on Quentin Nelson, now I actually WANT him at #11:

How good is Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson? Said one director of player personnel to me this week: "If you want to call him the best player in this class, no one can argue with you, and there's no way he'll bust. As safe as they come."

There's no way Nelson is the best player in this draft. Best OL - yes, and a great fit for the Phins.

Nelson makes a lot of sense for the Phins, since they're not real flexible with how they use defensive players. For example, taking a LB at 11 is probably out since we already have two starting LBs (ugh) and don't use a third LB too much. Safety is probably out because we already have two starters and never play dime. DE is probably out because we drafted Harris last year and still have Wake and Branch and they are high on Malveaux.

Unless they are serious about taking BPA and don't mind taking players at positions that are already "set", I think it's very likely that Nelson is the pick if he's there. Maybe the Phins will change defensive schemes and be more flexible with their drafting strategy, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Can we honestly say we have any position that's actually set as far as talent goes? There's no one that's safe on this team in my estimation. That is not taking into account the dipshits running the show, just my opinion.

I really couldn't agree with you more, but I think the Phins love this roster. I think they feel they are "close" - probably VERY close.

What frustrates me is how they approached the draft last season - they went out of their way to fill holes in free agency so they didn't have to draft those positions. It's why we didn't draft a TE despite that class being the best TE class maybe ever - we signed Thomas and Fasano. It's also why we didn't draft a guard till the end - we signed Larsen. I see the same thing happening this year...they'll probably sign Jimmy Graham so they won't have to draft a TE and they'll probably sign a FA WR so they won't have to draft Landry's replacement. Same story every year...we bypass better players because we are "set" at certain positions. It's a bad way to build a team, but that's what Tannenbaum does.

Damn, those first 4 picks alone would make that an A+ draft for me. cheers

But, I think Edmunds goes top 10 and Wynn could sneak into the first round.

Edmunds for sure. I really don't think he makes it out of the top 5 if Cousins' goes anywhere up there. Michel is actually better than Chubb in my opinion but he may just be a change of pace guy. Chubb was the workhorse.

Yep, Michel is definitely the more complete back for sure - excellent receiver as well as runner. One of my favorite players in this class.

Mayock doesn't think Edmunds is a fit for Miami (not that he'll be available).

But Mayock doesn’t believe Virginia Tech’s Edmunds is ideally suited for a 4-3 defense like Miami’s.

“In a 3-4, he’s an inside linebacker and he’d be great there,” Mayock said. “He also has a scary skill set as an edge rusher, which he did a little bit at Virginia Tech, and I know for sure he’s working on that now. So I see incredible upside. I see an off-the-ball linebacker, I think some of the three, four teams could look at him and say he could be a 3-4 outside linebacker, in addition to being a 3-4 inside linebacker. Right now what I say is a starting-off-the-ball linebacker and a potential sub at edge rusher. He’s got a skill set. I don’t use this word often, but he has a skill set that’s unique.”

No trades, and what I consider needs based on what they're doing with personnel and the impending unloading of Landry.

Round 1 Pick 11:  Nelson, Quenton, OG, Notre Dame (A+)
Round 2 Pick 10:  Hurst, Maurice, DT, Michigan (A)
Round 3 Pick 9:  Carter, Lorenzo, OLB, Georgia (A-)
Round 4 Pick 11:  Gesicki, Mike, TE, Penn State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 30:  Bates III, Jessie, FS, Wake Forest (A)
Round 6 Pick 9:  Wims, Javon, WR, Georgia (A+)
Round 7 Pick 5:  Adams, Tony, OG, North Carolina State (A+)
Round 7 Pick 11:  Allen, Brian, C, Michigan State (A)

And then with trades just for me Smile

Round 1 Pick 5 (DEN): Darnold, Sam, QB, Southern California (A)
Round 3 Pick 9: Ragnow, Frank, C/OG, Arkansas (A)
Round 4 Pick 11: Cain, Deon, WR, Clemson (A+)
Round 4 Pick 30: Bates III, Jessie, FS, Wake Forest (A)
Round 6 Pick 9: Bellamy, Davin, OLB, Georgia (A+)
Round 7 Pick 5: Akins, Jordan, TE, Central Florida (A-)
Round 7 Pick 11: Adams, Tony, OG, North Carolina State (A+)

That first draft is awesome; I'd love to see Carter come to us, if Tannenbaum doesn't trade away all of our picks. Bates too.

I want to make two more run throughs now. Smile

I feel like we need a guy like Bates sorely. We need someone that will help create turnovers.

Hurst from Michigan is being examined for heart issue and might not be able to play anymore.
