Just read this on Quentin Nelson, now I actually WANT him at #11:

How good is Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson? Said one director of player personnel to me this week: "If you want to call him the best player in this class, no one can argue with you, and there's no way he'll bust. As safe as they come."

There's no way Nelson is the best player in this draft. Best OL - yes, and a great fit for the Phins.

Nelson makes a lot of sense for the Phins, since they're not real flexible with how they use defensive players. For example, taking a LB at 11 is probably out since we already have two starting LBs (ugh) and don't use a third LB too much. Safety is probably out because we already have two starters and never play dime. DE is probably out because we drafted Harris last year and still have Wake and Branch and they are high on Malveaux.

Unless they are serious about taking BPA and don't mind taking players at positions that are already "set", I think it's very likely that Nelson is the pick if he's there. Maybe the Phins will change defensive schemes and be more flexible with their drafting strategy, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Can we honestly say we have any position that's actually set as far as talent goes? There's no one that's safe on this team in my estimation. That is not taking into account the dipshits running the show, just my opinion.

I really couldn't agree with you more, but I think the Phins love this roster. I think they feel they are "close" - probably VERY close.

What frustrates me is how they approached the draft last season - they went out of their way to fill holes in free agency so they didn't have to draft those positions. It's why we didn't draft a TE despite that class being the best TE class maybe ever - we signed Thomas and Fasano. It's also why we didn't draft a guard till the end - we signed Larsen. I see the same thing happening this year...they'll probably sign Jimmy Graham so they won't have to draft a TE and they'll probably sign a FA WR so they won't have to draft Landry's replacement. Same story every year...we bypass better players because we are "set" at certain positions. It's a bad way to build a team, but that's what Tannenbaum does.
