My NFL 1st round mock draft

Post by JMP on Mon Apr 23, 2018 10:15 pm

Here's my first stab at a first round mock...

1 Cleveland Browns - Sam Darnold, QB, USC
2 New York Giants - Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State
3 New York Jets - Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
4 Cleveland Browns - Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State
5 Denver Broncos - Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
6 Indianapolis Colts - Quenten Nelson, OG, Notre Dame
7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Derwin James, S, Florida State
8 Chicago Bears - Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech
9 San Francisco 49ers - Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State
10 Oakland Raiders - Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia
11 Miami Dolphins - Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama
12 Buffalo Bills - Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA
13 Washington Redskins - Vita Vea, DT, Washington
14 Green Bay Packers - Marcus Davenport, DE/LB, Texas-San Antonio
15 Arizona Cardinals - Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
16 Baltimore Ravens - Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama
17 Los Angeles Chargers - Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame
18 Seattle Seahawks - Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
19 Dallas Cowboys - Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU
20 Detroit Lions - Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
21 Cincinnati Bengals - Will Hernandez, OG, Texas-El Paso
22 Buffalo Bills - DJ Chark, WR, LSU
23 New England Patriots - Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
24 Carolina Panthers - DJ Moore, WR, Maryland
25 Tennessee Titans - Darius Leonard, LB, South Carolina State
26 Atlanta Falcons - Taven Bryan, DT, Florida
27 New Orleans Saints - Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina
28 Pittsburgh Steelers - Mike Gesicki, TE ,Penn State
29 Jacksonville Jaguars - Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
30 Minnesota Vikings - Isaiah Wynn, OG, Georgia
31 New England Patriots - Harrison Phillips, DT ,Nebraska
32 Philadelphia Eagles - Sam Hubbard, DE, Ohio State

EDIT: I took Leighton Vander Esch out of the first due to concerns about his long-term health.  So, that changed my picks for the Ravens at 16 (I now have them taking Rashaan Evaans) and the Titans at 25 (I now have them reaching a bit for Darius Leonard)

The Jets get Mayfield.... damn.

I believe he will be the best QB of this class, and he's a gamer.

Darnold is my guy, but I've really started to like Mayfield. I don't generally like shorter QBs, but man, he's got everything. I think he's the reason the Jets traded up to 3. If he succeeds in NY, you're looking at the next NFL mega-star.

without predicting trades...

1 Cleveland Browns - Sam Darnold, QB, USC
he's not perfect, but perhaps the safest of the QB picks.

2 New York Giants - Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State
Giants might try to entice someone to come and get a QB at this spot, but realize the value of pass rushers.

3 New York Jets - Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
they see what the green team 90 miles to the south did and try the same.

4 Cleveland Browns - Quenten Nelson, OG, Notre Dame
they've anointed the QB of the future and without Joe Thomas must protect him somehow.

5 Denver Broncos - Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State
Elway knows the effect a workhorse RB can have.

6 Indianapolis Colts - Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech
would love to finally find a pass rusher.

7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia
they've had a front row seat to the Falcons and their quick LBers.

8 Chicago Bears - Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State
this is where the phone really starts ringing for QB starved trade-ups, but cover corners are always in style.

9 San Francisco 49ers - Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama
i really, really think someone trades here for a QB, but Fitzpatrick is a talent.

10 Oakland Raiders - Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Raiders already trying to figure out how to stop Saquon in Denver.

11 Miami Dolphins - Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State
they'll tell you its not a reach, but they desperately need a LB.

I think if Rosen is there at 11 Gase and Co. would jump on him.

Mason Rudolph is being overlooked. I'd actually love to see the Fins get him, but 11 is too high. I think he goes late in the first though. Just hope it isn't to the Pats.

I really don't believe all the Dolphin QB hype.  Gase needs to win now, and drafting a first-round QB to sit on the bench for a year or two won't help with that.

Mayock and I have the same 7 players going in the top 7. Only difference is he has Nelson at 5 and Allen at 6...I have the reverse.

Poor Mike...if he's agreeing with me that probably means he's headed for a FAIL! Wink

Made one change to my mock:

You know, solely from a job security standpoint, drafting a QB is the way to get 3 more years for Gase.
