OTA hype machine: Tannehill looking good

Post by JMP on Thu May 24, 2018 11:59 am

I'm always hesitant to listen to any of the hype that comes out of OTAs, but it's good to hear some positive things from a few of Tannehill's new teammates.

http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2018/05/24/how-ryan-tannehill-has-already-dazzled-these-new-dolphins/

“I’ve seen him make a few throws, especially on the run,” Sitton said Wednesday. “He rolled out (Wednesday) after a play-action and threw a dime piece running to the left. I was like, ‘Damn, that was pretty impressive.’”

...

“He seems like a great leader,” Sitton said. “He always takes command of the huddle. He takes command of the meetings, so from that aspect, everything has been positive.”

...

“He’s a leader, obviously, in and out of the huddle,” Kilgore said. “His ability to move in the pocket and throw the deep ball, it’s been great. (His) knowledge of the game is what you would want of a starting quarterback, and getting to know him and his wife and their little boy off the field has been great as well. Nothing but first class with Ryan Tannehill.”

Receiver Albert Wilson likes that Tannehill throws a catchable ball.

“I love his ball,” Wilson said. “He’s definitely good with the timing. He puts it to where you can make a play on the ball. It’s a great thing.”

I've also read that Tannehill and Amendola are already on the same page.

The comments about leadership and commanding the huddle are particularly interesting, because those have been areas Tannehill has struggled with since day one. Far too often, he looks and acts like he's just along for the ride. It would be awesome if he could step up and start displaying some of those intangibles that all the greats have.

Tannehill's leadership early on had a lot to do with the fact that Philbin hated him, and the team knew it. Just an opinion, but it had to be a factor.

It's like we are getting a great massage and happy ending from the Miami Dolphin's organization trying to convince us after 7 years Tanny will finally go from average QB to Superstar.

Speaking from personal experience perhaps? Razz That actually seems like a great idea right about now Laughing

But yeah, I'm sure a QB who's never won more than 8 starts in a season and is now 30 and coming off two major knee injuries with mobility as his one strong point is all of a sudden going to have a career year Rolling Eyes

When you really think about it, so many things have to happen this season just for the Dolphins to get to .500 - it seems like a nearly impossible task. One of the more important things is of course Tannehill...and expecting him to become a dominant player this season just seems like a huge ask, considering the knee injuries and all the new players and coaches.

That is the out they are leaving themselves. "Look, with all the new coaches and players, and Tanny coming off 2 knee injuries, what did you expect? We HAD to change the culture. We are close................"

I don't believe that we are as close as we would like Miami to be. Lets be honest Miami is trying to be average and make it tot the superbowl. that not going to happen. You have to be above average to make it to the playoffs. Miami RB and QB situation is okay but who is he throwing the ball too and who is blocking for him? Miami odds are high but not enough to make it to the superbowl.

They're not average. They've below average. They're a 6-win team with one or two breaks positive or negative from being an 8 or 4-win team. They're not doing anything of merit. They have some nice pieces, but the sum of the parts is not good.

I disagree. IMO they're a 4-win team that could get 6 wins or 2 depending on the breaks.

I said same as 316 when the schedule was released. I see them winning 4 games and 2 possible if they get breaks.
I'm so glad you guys are down to earth and realize we are not a good team. On the other board I've posted on they are thinking this is a 10 win playoff team and healthy Tanny will be a pro-bowl QB.

I think 6-10 or 7-9 is most likely, but I could also see the bottom falling out.

the OTA hype machine is really cranking it up now...

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article212558429.html

And the thinking within the organization is that, Tuesday's practice notwithstanding, this offense has more playmakers than it has had in a long time. That this offense will have more options for getting big plays than it has had in a long time.

seriously?!?! oh, and this is just the tip of the iceberg...

That perhaps a big problem (nonproblem) this offense will have is figuring out how to distribute the ball so as to keep all the players with an appetite for scoring touchdowns well fed.

they can't actually believe this, can they? but don't worry, Gase is on it...

Gase knows how to distribute the football on offense. In 2013, his first year as the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator, he coached five players who scored 10 touchdowns or more.

once again, Gase had nothing to do with that...it was all Peyton Manning. of course the offense - stoked with all these playmakers - readily displayed this over-abundance of firepower with the following series of downs in OTAs...

The Dolphins offense is trailing 21-13 with 13 seconds to play and the football on the 7-yard line.

So on second down, quarterback Ryan Tannehill takes the snap and searches the end zone for an open receiver.

And he's looking ...

And looking ...

And finally Tannehill gives up on the play by launching the football out of the end zone before the clock expires because, after all, there are other downs and opportunities to score.

On third down, Tannehill again looks for an open receiver in the end zone. And finding no one, now he's drifting right because the pass rush is getting too close.

Finally the Dolphins quarterback throws the football and it falls harmlessly after bounding to the ground after bounding off a crowd of players. Well, there's always fourth down, right?

No, because that third-down play took all eight seconds remaining on the clock.

Club owner Stephen Ross, watching from the sideline, drops his head in apparent disappointment.

it would be funny, if it wasn't so sadly true.

"all the players with an appetite for scoring touchdowns"???  Who exactly would that be?

Here are our top WRs:
--Amendola had 6 TDs total the past two seasons - in the high-powered Patriots offense
--Wilson had 5 TDs total the past two seasons - in the high-powered Chiefs offense
--Stills had 15 TDs the past two seasons - which is good, but not exactly world-beating
--And yeah, our two best TEs have never played an NFL game.

So let's not pretend that we have all these guys that score TDs by the ton.

And yeah, Gase's offense sure looked good with Peyton Manning...but where were all the TDs in Chicago?  How about two seasons in Miami?

It would be AWESOME if the Phins suddenly start scoring 30 points a game...but realistically, where are all the playmakers at QB, WR and TE?

As for pass distribution, we'll see.  Gase relied on one primary receiver his first two seasons here...so he's going to have to change his philosophy. And Tannehill is going to have to learn to go through his progressions a lot better than he has in the past.

Barring injury, Amendola will get 120 receptions this season, guaranteed. He is the new safety blanket and primary receiver. If the TE pans out, which he should, he'll get the bulk of the remainder of the passes.

you may be right, but if so, they still got lots of work to do...

Miami’s defense pulled down two interceptions during Wednesday’s session, which featured another day of struggles for the Dolphins’ offense.

And Reshad Jones intercepted a Ryan Tannehill pass intended for Danny Amendola that fellow safety T.J. McDonald broke up in the middle of the field.

Amendola will average 6.2 yards per reception.
