This is Tanny's year

As the Dolphins begin year seven of Tannehill's career hoping/thinking/praying that he’s the answer, leave it to former Dolphins great Mark Duper to articulate the thoughts of many Dolphins fans:

“We always say Ryan Tannehill has a lot of potential but there’s always something wrong with him,” Duper bemoaned this offseason. “I still don’t know how good he is. [This] year is do or die for him. He needs to stay healthy and perform or there’s going to be trouble in paradise. Dan [Marino] likes him.”

potential. ability. turning the corner. blah, blah, blah. yes folks, this is the year. this is it. this is the prove it year...again.

It was easy to question why the Dolphins didn’t draft a quarterback in April. But draft history this century at least somewhat justifies that approach.

Of the 124 quarterbacks drafted between the fourth and seventh rounds from 2000 to 2016, only three became above average starters and three became average starters. That’s six out of 124, an awful percentage.

45 quarterbacks were selected in the first round. Fifteen (one-third) became above average starters and nine average starters. That leaves 21 who were busts or close to it.

19 quarterbacks were selected in the second round. Only three became above average starters. Two became average or slightly better. That means 14 of the 19 never even became multiyear starters.

Of the 21 quarterbacks selected in the third round between 2000 and 2016, just three proved to be above average and another was average. So that’s 17 failures in 21 tries.

Bottom line: Maybe the Dolphins were wise in drafting players more likely to succeed at other positions.

and while that may all be true, you know what? even if the percentage of success for QB's is slim, the percentage is a guaranteed 0.0% if you don't select one at all. its like trying to win the lottery without buying a ticket.

and oh sure, the percentages at other positions might be slightly higher, but if you know anything about Dolphin drafts, the percentage of success has been no better at those other positions either.

It was funny 3 years ago saying it was somehow the 3rd make or break year in a row for him. Now it's just a sad statement on the level this franchise has sunk to.

Most teams either have their QB, or they are trying to find the QB of the future. We're so broken we don't even know if we have the right QB, but are too scared to try and find another one.

The really sad part to me is that Calais Campbell's hit that started this whole mess wasn't even flagged, and the league found nothing wrong with it. If Tannehill's name had been Brady, we all know it would've been a totally different story.

I'm just not seeing how an average QB whose mobility was his only real strength is now suddenly going to have a career season at age 30 coming off two straight major injuries to the same knee. More likely it'll be Culpepper 2.0

Also, how silly is it to praise a franchise that passed up Brees (twice), Rodgers and Ryan, and could've even had Wilson, just because most drafted QBs don't turn out to be stars? Seriously, WTF???

Dude will be 30 years old in a couple of weeks, and we still don't know if he's the answer.

Or maybe that means we do know the answer...
