New coordiators and position coaches hired Empty New coordiators and position coaches hired

Incoming head coach Brian Flores could bring a fellow New England Patriots assistant with him to run the Miami Dolphins offense.

Flores, who can’t be named Dolphins coach until after the New England Patriots face the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3 in Atlanta, will attempt to hire Patriots receivers coach Chad O’Shea as the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator, according to a league source.

...

Flores has worked alongside O’Shea since 2009. This former college quarterback at Marshall and the University of Houston, where he played in 18 games, is viewed as one of the NFL’s up and coming offensive minds.

If Miami does lure O’Shea, convincing him to leave New England, he’ll become a first-time playcaller on any level.

Last year it was widely speculated that O’Shea either would join Josh McDaniels in Indianapolis, if he took the Colts job, or would replace him in New England as the offensive coordinator.

When McDaniels stayed in New England, pulling out of the Colts job at the last minute, so did O’Shea. This year O’Shea was reportedly a candidate for the Lions opening, potentially joining former Patriots assistant Matt Patricia, but he never interviewed for the position that was filled by the hiring of Darrell Bevell last week.

"Chad's unbelievable," McDaniels told MassLive.com last year. "He's incredibly responsible for any and all of our success in the red zone. He does a lot of that work and prepares us well for that situation in the game."

O'Shea's career path doesn't align with the typical trajectory of Patriots assistants. He didn’t spend a decade working his way up New England’s organization like Flores did.

O'Shea began coaching in the college ranks, where he coached receivers, tight ends, and special teams at the University of Houston and Southern Mississippi. He left Southern Miss in 2002 to take a volunteer job with the Kansas City Chiefs, working under Dick Vermeil.

He spent three seasons as offensive assistant/wide receivers coach for the Minnesota Vikings (2006-08) before Bill Belichick, who worked with O'Shea's father, Mike, on the Baltimore Colts staff in 1975, brought him to New England as the team’s receiver coach in 2009.

I like it, especially since we have a veteran coach (Caldwell) on hand to help out.  This is shaping up to be a very interesting coaching staff, featuring a lot of young hungry coaches with varied experience in winning organizations.  As long as Flores surrounds himself and his staff with some veteran minds like Caldwell, I feel good about the direction.

Very good hire.

I love the addition of Caldwell, his experience and tenure in the league is going to be a key resource for what will be a very young staff.

To be honest I don't think that he has been hired yet but Chad would be a good addition for the Miami coaching staff.

No one on the Pats can be officially hired till after the Super Bowl, but Flores will be the Dolphins' head coach and he is starting to assemble his staff.

according to an NFL Network report on Monday, former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive line coach Marion Hobby and Robbie Leonard, who spent last year as the New York Giants outside linebackers coach, will also be joining Flores’ staff in Miami. SiriusXM also reported Monday night that Miami will hire former Jaguars offensive line coach Pat Flaherty.

*Changed the title of this thread so it can be about all new hires*

The Phins are keeping RB coack Eric Studesville and DB coach Tony Oden.

More new coaches:
STs Coordinator: Danny Crossman
TE coach: George Godsey
WR coach: Karl Dorrell

Rizzi is reportedly in negotiations with another team. Crossman has been a STs coach forever, most recently with the Bills.

Dorrell has been with the Phins before, and was with the Jets the past few seasons.

Godsey was a coach for the Patriots from 2011-2013, and has been with the Lions the past couple of seasons.

Flores is putting together a very experienced coaching staff. Most of the guys coming on board are supposedly known as good teachers...which would be a nice change from the Gase era of "do what I tell you and shut up".

Agreed.  Gase staff in Miami was straight trash.  With the lone exception of Rizzi.  I'd prefer a sacrifice to go the other way, a step down on special teams but a major step up everywhere else.  Which is exactly what it looks like we've got.  Sad to see Rizzi go, but when you interview for the head spot and don't get it, it makes little sense to double down with the existing team undergoing a major upheaval.

Nothing on Gase staff in NY makes me think it will be any better, with the exception of Williams on defense.  Gase offense should still be random, inconsistent, and without an identity.

One more note on Rizzi: Armando reports he is NOT going to the NY Jets to join Gase. Bad for Gase IMO. Means one of two things. Either Gase is dumb enough in failing to realize how strong a ST coach Rizzi is. Or, he was unable to "sell" Rizzi on the opportunity presented in joining him there. Both of these speak to a lack of a real strong relationship between the two. Given the credibility Rizzi holds.... not a good thing for Gase.

Seems like Miami is getting rid of all of the old coaching staff but they should have added some new scouting staff instead of keeping the same old losers that they got now.

They did however keep the RB and CB coaches. All the others, as should be, are gone.

Yeah, I'm good with the RB and DB coaches staying - both did a nice job this season IMO.

BTW - Rizzi is headed to the Saints.

Sounds like Patriots QB coach Jerry Schuplinski will be the new Dolphins QB coach.

And, the Phins are supposedly talking with Dom Capers about a defensive assistant position.

Wow. I cannot get over how night and day this staff is turning out to be, when compared to the Gase staff.

Caldwell a veteran leader on the offensive side of the ball. Add Capers and his resume to the defensive side? This easily matches - if not exceeds - the hiring of Gregg Williams on defense in NY.

Okay either Grier is making the right moves or Miami made a deal with the devil and he giving Miami coaching personnel. All I know is that Miami is making the moves that fans have been looking for.
