DeVante Parker - thoughts on his performance against the Bucs?
I'm wondering if anyone else here watched the game against the Bucs, and if so what you thought of Parker's first game experience?
Personally, I was very unimpressed. He had the one catch, which was fine, but I tried to key on him on his other snaps, and to me he looks like a very poor route runner. He gets off the line good, but it all goes downhill from there. He looks very slow in and out of his cuts, he doesn't angle his body to give the QB a bigger target, and his routes look very sloppy in general. I think a lot of these things could have been addressed in the offseason, but obviously the injury prevented that from happening. It looks to me like he's a long way from being a full-time player. Maybe the coaches can work him into a couple of red zone packages while he works on his other skills, but right now he looks like he's way behind all the other receivers IMO.
Thoughts?

He missed way too much team to break into what I consider a very deep unit with Landry, Jennings, Stills, Matthews.
He'll need work on everything you noted, I expect very little from him until say week 12 or so.

Unless the player is an undrafted FA or vet fighting for that last roster spot I want NO ONE playing hard pre-season game 4.

Well, yeah, but in Parker's case he had never set foot on an NFL field in a game, and the coaches wanted to at least get him some experience being in a huddle and competing against another team. And I am absolutely not saying that he didn't play hard...I was specifically looking at his route running, which to me seems very poor and undeveloped. That is the case with most rookie receivers, of course - but Parker never got the chance to work on those things this offseason.
Good route running is pretty much the most important part of a receiver's job in this offense. It's all based on timing, and if the route is run incorrectly it will result in a negative play. I wonder how much time Parker will actually get to work on route running in weekly practices...probably not much, because the focus is of course on game prep.

Parker's route running was supposed to be a strength, so I'm just going to chalk it up to a rookie with practically no experience. Losing all that time out of camp is a killer, and I don't expect Parker to be of any real value for at least a month.

I wasn't all that impressed with Parker as a route runner form what I saw of him in college. I thought what made him good were his hands and his ability to win contested passes, and yards after catch ability. But yeah, missing all that time has no doubt slowed his development.
The only receiver in this entire class that I thought was a polished route runner was Amari Coopper, and what I saw from him in preseason confirmed that.
