BREAKING NEWS: Phins trade Will Davis to Ravens

Post by JMP on Mon Sep 21, 2015 4:34 pm

Ian Rapoport

@RapSheet

#Dolphins CB Will Davis has been traded to the #Ravens, source said.

@RapSheet

The #Dolphins will receive a late-round draft pick from #Ravens in exchange for CB Will Davis, source said.

Good to get something for him, but at the end of the day it just highlights how bad our drafts have been. Another wasted 3rd round pick.

Too bad he's going to be all pro next year. Coyle's vaunted do nothing defense!

Trade Matt Moore to Dallas. Maybe we could snooker a philly cheese steak out of Chip Kelly for "starting guard" Dallas Thomas. They need help on the offensive line bad.

Man, that would almost salvage this mess of a season for me. Get rid of that waste of a roster spot once and for all, and get a pick for the next GM and head coach to squander...er, I mean use wisely.

Matt Moore is a dead end. When Tannehill gets seriously injured (which is coming soon...) I'm sure Logan Thomas could take sacks, fumble and throw INTs just as well as Moore can.

Just imagine if Tannebaum got an offensive lineman out of Dallas for him....

Ha! And I could watch from my skybox after I hit powerball.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Phins trade Will Davis to Ravens

As expected, Will Davis had a great game for the Ravens last night. I watched the game and he looked better than he ever has with the Phins. I was never really a fan, but this continues the trend of players improving when they leave the Phins. Miami sure could use some imapct plays in the secondary like Davis made last night, but it is what it is.

Here's Armando's article about it:
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2015/10/will-davis-joins-list-of-players-performing-wellfor-somebody-else.html

Well, after one full week in Baltimore, Davis on Thursday night looked better in Baltimore than he ever looked with the Dolphins. The Ravens played him as their slot cornerback, not outside as Miami tried to do for so long. They put him in the game ahead of Kyle Arrington, who has been with the team longer.

And Davis had a key tackle on Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown on third down in the open field (Dolphins tackling stinks right now) and had another important pass defensed on a third down (the Miami defense has not been good on late downs so far this season).

So feel good for Davis.

And feel pain for the Dolphins because this is what has been happening too often: Players here go elsewhere and perform better than they did here. Players from elsewhere who performed well come here and don't play up to those same standards. In some cases, players come here after playing well elsewhere, don't perform here, and then leave and go on to play well again.

BTW, I've said from day one that Davis is aggressive and has excellent balls skills, but can't cover deep. The Ravens solved that problem by using him in the slot, where he had to cover mainly shorter routes. That allowed him to play to his strengths.

Wow...a coaching staff that puts players in a position to succeed??? What a great concept! Neutral

And the point is, Will Davis didn't suddenly become great. I still think he's a very flawed player. But the thing is, he has always had the ability to make plays at the NFL level. The Phins didn't know how to get him to do that in a game, yet the Ravens' staff was able to figure it out in just two weeks.

Same thing with Brice McCain...he was a great nickle/slot corner, and we're playing him outside where he sucks. Classic Dolphin square peg/round hole strategy.

The actual problem is that Miami has a problem in developing rookies into real players or even finding where they should be place on the team. If Miami would have played him at nickel then Miami D might not be having the problem that they are having now.

Well, Will Davis looked pretty developed to me.  The issue, as has been stated above, is that Miami coaches can't figure out what to do with a player for his skillset.

I bet if you peeked in on a coaches'  luncheon you'd see guys trying to eat soup with a fork.

Exactly! They can't even figure out which position a player should play!

They have Douglas - a LG his whole life - playing RG. They have Brice McCain - a slot corner - playing outside. They have Chris McCain - a natural DE (or 3-4 OLB) - playing 4-3 OLB. They have Billy Turner - a natural LT - playing RG. It's crazy! I understand that 'position flexibility' is all the rage these days, but damn, play a guy where he is going to have the most success - stop trying to force it.

And they draft a LB from Oregon with a history to play DE.

Oh yeah...Jordan was another example. Take everything that makes a player good, and make him stop doing it and relearn a new position that doesn't fit his skillset. That's the Dolphin way.

Not that Pat White was an NFL caliber anything, but they broke him too, trying to change his throwing motion. That's one of my pet peeves with coaches for QBs nowadays. If you don't throw exactly just so, you can't play. Man, Ken Stabler and Bernie Kosar wouldn't have cracked a roster in this day and age of the megalomaniac coordinator.

Indian burial ground curse. Until someone addresses this by moving team HQ it won't matter who's hired, they'll just keep making the same mistakes over and over. That '08 season looks more and more amazingly fluky by the day.

I miss the good old days when the Fins kept drafting players who were so awful that NO team could've gotten anything out of them, and in some cases never even tried.

Just wait until the Ravens storm back from 0-3 to make the playoffs...At this point if I'm a player on the Fins, I'm BEGGING to be traded. Hell, at this point I might even retire rather than slog through he rest of this season. Seriously.

And Davis tears his ACL. The reason he was traded to begin with: He can't stay on the field. Dolphins got this one right. Nice draft Mr. Ireland. Oh please NYF, find us and defend Jeff Ireland!

NYF is a good dude, but he tends to argue a point because he's taken a position and doesn't want to back off of it. It's very FOX news like of him.

Sucks that he got hurt, but it's still mind-boggling that the Dolphins couldn't get anything out of Davis while the Ravens got immediate results after just a couple of weeks.

Haven't heard anything from NYF is a long time....
