Al Saunders joining Dolphins as consultant
Albert Breer of NFL Media reports that onetime Chargers head coach and longtime NFL offensive assistant Al Saunders will be joining the team as a consultant. Saunders, who was most recently a senior offensive assistant with the Raiders, has a history with Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.

not sure what to think about this. it kind of smells like a half-measure as in, "we're not sure if we want to fire Lazor, so we bring in his old mentor to help him through a rough patch." is this just doubling down on the current scheme or is this help to throw off the shackles that Philbin may have placed on full blown Lazor-ism?

I guess it's better than nothing, but it's basically sending a message that Lazor isn't doing his job well and needs someone to look over his shoulder. If that's the case, why not just fire him and be done with it? But, at least it's something...

I want Coyle gone. Not sure if we should give up on Lazor yet.

Lazor's can be an asset but Tannebaum and Coyle need to be released

Al saunders and Lazor worked together for 2 years in Washington and Al Saunders has forgotten more about Offense than Lazor even knows, So I think it will help.

Lazor is not an asset - he's a major part of the problem. If he was doing his job, the team wouldn't have had to hire a dinosaur to watch over him.
It's really strange to me how so many Dolfans are OK with Lazor...not just here, but all over the internet. I don't know what he did to deserve a free pass, but the fact is that right now the Dolphins have the worst offense in the entire NFL and Lazor has no solutions. I guess people want to pin it all on Philbin, but what exactly has Lazor done at any point in his career to inspire confidence?
Oh, and by the way...the Redskins offense was terrible for the 2 years that Saunders and Lazor were there. In 2006 the Skins offense was ranked 20th in scoring, and in 2007 they were ranked 18th. It's probably safe to say that Saunders stopped being an "offensive guru" at least 15 years ago.

exactly.
and now this...
Receivers coach Ken O'Keefe, who had never coached in the NFL prior to joining the Dolphins, has been re-assigned. He is now a senior offensive assistant.

is senior offensive assistant above or below offensive coordinator? or is this just one more set of hands to muddle the waters?

Very interesting. Sounds like the Phins are doing everything they can to make sure that Lazor isn't the only one running the offense. Short of firing him, that's the best-case scenario IMO.
"Senior offensive assistant" sounds like it may be at least on the same level as OC...but who knows with this team!
