How Bad Is Tannehill?

Post by DolFan 316 on Mon Jan 04, 2016 4:44 pm

Second year QBs Blake Bortles and Derek Carr, playing for those noted powerhouses the Jags and Raiders, both exceeded 30 TD passes this season. Tannehill has never had more than 27 in his career despite starting every game every season.

Aaron Rodgers, who I've repeatedly been told sucks this season, has 31 TD passes and 8 INTs. So Tannehill's best isn't even as good as Rodgers' worst.

Tell me why this team shouldn't at least consider Lynch again?

The meaningless win over a badly injured, unmotivated Patriots team yesterday has not distracted me. I do not believe Tannehill will ever be franchise-QB material, and there is no reason to carry him beyond 2016. We have the "out" in the contract after next year, and I expect us to use it.

I would love to see us draft Lynch. Failing that, we at least need to bring in a legitimate prospect to challenge Tannehill. Hell, Kirk Cousins went in the fourth round and unseated RGIII, a bold move now being rewarded with a playoff berth. We won't be anywhere near that lucky but if Miami does not try to get a legitimate QB to ultimately replace Tannehill, then it has no chance of happening.

He's way too inconsistent, is not "clutch" by any stretch of the word, and with this seasons statistics has officially regressed meaning the "he gets better every year" argument has been rendered invalid. I don't know why we still run the ball against 8 man fronts, but something is seriously wrong with our offense, and the coaches have changed several times but Tannehill stays the same.

From what I have been hearing that the new coach doesn't have to stick with Tannehill and can draft a QB if they want to. IMO, they will if there is one available in the late round and if he is better than Tannehill then he will get traded to the Browns or the Texans.

As I said in Jmp's Game Thoughts thread, I now believe he's learned how to turn it on when it doesn't matter and choke when it does from Moore, who is (was?) an absolute master at this. I can't believe that never occurred to me sooner.

As some may recall I was a huge Tannehill backer. I thought the deep ball issue was pure bullshit(and it was). I felt like he excelled with terrible offensive line play and 27 tds with 12 ints on an ascending QB was good enough. But after this season I'm convinced we have seen his ceiling. He is just a guy. I hope the Dolphins are concealing their interest in a rookie QB and don't seriously view him as the future any longer.

The thing is, regardless of what you think of Tannehill, the Dolphins MUST bring in some legit competition.  One, because Tannehill has never had serious competition, and I think it has hurt him.  And two, because Tannehill's contract starts to get crazy in 2017.  If we can find a replacement that's just as good (or hopefully better) at a cheaper price, that's a win.

True dat.

Tannehill's biggest issue is inconsistency. He has NEVER played well for a whole season. He shows ENOUGH to make folks think he is the answer, but ultimately, what you get is fired OCs and fired HCs.

As John Gruden is known to say, "Potential gets coaches fired!" Tannehill shows potential, and he makes a HC think, "Man, if I can just get him over the hump???" But with Tannehill, the flashes where he looks good, are not the potential showing thru, they are the exception IMO. The inconsistent play, the inaccuracy, the lack of anticipation, the misreads, the no reads, coupled together with the "flashes", make for a legitimately MEDIOCRE QB IMO.

Now, you CAN win with Tannehill, but not if the gameplan does not include a very good supporting cast on offense, with a good Oline and a semi-great rushing attack.

The problem with all that is, you can find a much cheaper QB who can win with a great supporting cast IMHO.

Still, I think the main thing lacking on the Phins is HCing. A good HC would realize that Tannehill is totally unsuited for this one back quick passing attack that Philbin has installed. Would change it to hide Tannehill's flaws....mainly, recognize the PROBLEMS with the Dolphins offense and make changes. Not simply keep trying to force a square peg into a round hole and think better execution is the answer, as Philbin did.

A good HC with Tannehill MIGHT be something to consider. We have seen what the Phins have with Tannehill and bad coaching.

Lets hope the franchise tries something different.

Well, FF, now that Tannenbaum and Grier are in charge, I think we are going to see "ground and pound" in Miami. I think we are going to become a Parcellsian power running team, where the passing game lives off of play action. That certainly plays to Tannehill's strengths, giving him a chance at "easier" passes (in theory) and taking a lot of pressure off him.

As we saw with the Rex Ryan Jets, I think it's a philosophy that can win some games - but won't win a Super Bowl. For what it's worth, I think Hue Jackson would fit well with that philosophy...

Check my new thread in NFL talk. Of course the Fins are going to go the dinosaur route--right after running it an absurdly low number of times even by modern standards Rolling Eyes
