http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2016/01/21/new-dolphins-coach-gase-calls-tannehills-struggles-a-hiccup/

“I feel pretty good about what we can do with him [Tannehill],” Gase said on the Joe Rose Show, 560-WQAM. “I feel like we can help him.

“It was going upward from the time he started. I know last year was a hiccup and I know he was disappointed in last year and obviously every Dolphin fan was frustrated with the situation that occurred. We feel really good with the staff we’re putting together, how we’re going to build this thing offensively. I feel like we can help with the sacks, we can eliminate some of these hits he’s taken. That’s going to be key.”

“I like to mix it up,” he said. “I like to be a little more of a variety. We’ll look a little different every week.

“A lot of the things I’ve learned was from Josh McDaniels when I was in Denver. That’s when we started creating a little bit of fluid style of game planning where one week it might look like we’re based out of the ‘50s and one week we might be spread out throwing the ball all over the place.

“We’re going to create this thing and build it to where guys are comfortable moving in and out of certain personnel groups, certain formations and whatever’s best to win that week, that’s what we want to do.”

Well, welcome to the modern NFL!  Imagine that...designing a gameplan based on your opponent each week!  Shocked

To me, the big news isn't that Gase is actually going to gameplan...it's that the Dolphins are finally going to gameplan!  LOL

What Gase is talking about is what almost every team already does.  Unfortunately, the last couple of Dolphin offensive coordinators were so set in their ways and so damn egocentric that they didn't think gameplanning for an opponent was necessary.  Lazor, especially, just did his thing and didn't make any changes or adjustments, regardless of results.  So in that respect, it is refreshing to hear that the Phins will finally adjust by opponent...but it's not something that's unique or earth-shattering...most teams do it.  And of course, no one does it to the extent that the Patriots do it...

The thing I have liked the most about Gase so far is his ideology of tailoring his plan to his players. We haven't had that in a long time.

I cannot believe you guys don't even see the value that lazor/Taylor had in tannehill. Who else could have coached a quarterback to be highly tunnel visioned on fn 1 receiver?

BTW JMP, Lazor did a helluva job adjusting during his tenure....did you forget that Landry ran crossing routes reverses, reverses, fades, slants, pitches etc etc.......oh shit you meant the whole team....my bad missed that one!!!!!

Lazor's nickname was Bubbles McGhee.

Ha! So true. Lazor sure kept teams guessing...will the next bubble screen be to the left, or to the right? And how many yards short of the first down marker will we throw the ball on third down? Must've kept defensive coordinators up all week trying to defend against all those 3 yard and under pass plays! lol!

Yep. I'm interested to see if he sticks with that plan. Sounds great on paper, but you need the right players to make it work - guys that are versatile and good at multiple things. If your players are one-dimensional and/or suck, there's only so much you can do.

Overall, I don't expect the offense to look too different. I think it'll still be mostly shotgun, no fullback, multiple-receiver sets, a lot of screens. Hopefully the difference will be more variety in playcalling....more creative running plays, more intermediate and deep passing, getting the ball to players other than Landry, using the entire field, etc.

agreed. that's why i was glad to hear that he learned from Josh McDaniels. of course "learning" and "doing" are two different things.

but then...

Gase said much of his offense is based on the Colts.

“The great thing about bringing Clyde in is it’s somebody that has been in this offense before,” he said. “I really stole it from them and Indianapolis. So him walking in, the terminologies are as close as it can get to what they had in Indianapolis."

so, what exactly does Indy's offense look like?

It's not very good.  They throw deep a lot, which I like, and utilize the TEs a lot, which I also like.  But their running game is almost non-existent and their OL sucks.  This year, the Colts ran the ball less than 400 times...just 52 times more than the Phins.  In 2014 they ran the ball just 16 times more than the Phins.

At least they scored a lot in 2014...458 points, which is amazing.  This season, with Luck missing a lot of time, they actually scored less than the Phins.  But overall, I think the Colts' offensive system sucks, and has actually hurt Luck.  He has not been half the QB I expected him to be, even with the one stellar season in '14.

I really wish we'd run an offense with a fullback, but that's not happening...the Bears and Colts don't use a FB, so I'm sure Gase won't use one either.

All things considered, I think the Colts' offense is pretty similar to what we ran under Lazor, and what Gase ran in Chicago - in terms of formations, plays, etc.  The Colts and Bears both use more up-tempo and throw intermediate/deep more than Miami, and the Bears ran more than both teams.  Like I said, we have to hope for more creativity with the playcalling, but overall I don't think it'll look much different.  I was hoping for major changes to the scheme, but I don't see that happening.  I think we'll still see mostly shotgun formations and a lot of screens.

in a nutshell, offensively no scheme is going to work unless the qb and the coach can get their shit together.

Bottom line: if Gase can't trust Tannehill, then Tanmehill won't thrive in any offense.

Luck and Cutler had several years of adjusting protection, routes, and audibles. Tannehill will now have to learn this on the fly. Gsse will only be successful if he can maximize Tannehill's skill set. Nothing else! Win or lose!
