I see nothing wrong with that as long as Miami get a good draft pick

Trade him. Wanting too much $$$ for his actual production. If we can get a 2nd or 3rd rd pick for him, or maybe a starting caliber LB or OG, do it. They should have done this with Wake 2 or 3 years ago.

I think it's a fantasy but if it's doable I'd be all over that.

better than a 2nd or 3rd. there are tons of players that are looking for good DE and for the fact that Miami still needs too many players makes so much sense.

I'm all for trading Vernon, but I don't see it happening. With the money he wants I don't see any team trading a high pick AND giving him huge money. He's not an elite player, at all.

This team is going to be riddled with holes. We're not winning 6 games this season.

Teams like Oakland who are at the cap floor have to spend money. Vernon and Mack would be formidable. Not saying it happens but I think the Raiders are close. You never know.
That being said I'm going to be a little grumpy if Vernon gets the franchise or the transition tag.

Yep, that is true...there are a couple of teams that need to spend A LOT of money. I still don't think any team is going to give a high pick AND a huge contract to a player that is nowhere near elite. Especially in a year where it looks like there are a decent number of intriguing pass rushers in the draft.
I agree...I won't be happy if Vernon gets tagged.
Re: Olivier Vernon: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation on Free-Agent DE
Reading twitter feeds on the topic, sounds to me like a long term deal by the deadline is unlikely, and that one of the tags will be used. Don't know which one, team is keeping their intent on this quiet.

That's what scares me. If they can't reach a long term deal, then we have almost $16 million tied up in Vernon for who knows how long...maybe the whole season if a deal can't be worked out. To me, that's an awful situation...total waste of cap space.
And trying to trade Vernon is easier said than done...I don't think the market for him is going to be all that great if teams have to trade for him.
Re: Olivier Vernon: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation on Free-Agent DE
Pft now reports the front office hasn't decided on using the tag yet, we won't know until tomorrow

Twitter reports that Vernon got the transition tag. I'm glad it's not franchise tag. Let market set his price if a team overpays, then he is gone - like clay last year

I'm not a fan of this move but it's better than the franchise tag. Miami is now around 4 million over the cap. I expect Jennings to be cut within the next few hours.

Re: Olivier Vernon: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation on Free-Agent DE
The Miami Dolphins have placed the transition tag on Olivier Vernon, guaranteeing him $12.73 million for the 2016 season, and giving the team a right to match any deal another team offers him when free agency begins on March 7.
The decision, which needed to be made by the NFL's Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline, benefits both sides because it sets the price point for Vernon to begin negotiations on a long-term deal, and increases the odds of Miami retaining the former University of Miami standout.
Both the Dolphins and Vernon's agent, David Canter, who is based in South Florida, would rather hammer out a multi-year deal for the three-year starter, who is widely viewed as one of the top 20 impending free agents in the 2016 crop of talent that might become available.
However, the negotiations will likely be painful to the cap-strapped Dolphins because of the escalating price tag teams are placing on young pass rushers.
Vinny Curry, a pass rusher who has produced 62 tackles, 16.5 sacks and forced four fumbles in his four seasons with the Eagles, signed a five-year, $46.25 million contract ($18 million is fully guaranteed) with the Eagles earlier this month. Last year Jerry Hughes got five-years, $45 million ($17.6 million guaranteed) from Buffalo.
Vernon, who turns 26 in October, finished last season with 61 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and a league-high 41 quarterback hurries. He led all 4-3 ends in quarterback hits with 30. During his four-year NFL career the Dolphins' 2012 third-round pick started 44 games, tallied 196 tackles, 29 sacks and forced three fumbles.

so this just seems to buy more time to negotiate a long term deal. so it appears the Curry and Hughes deals puts the market average somewhere around $9M per year. the Dolphins have to decide if Vernon is worth more than those players and factor in the overall future cap increase. if the Phins determine Vernon's value is somewhere in the $10-11M per year area, they make their offer and if another team comes in and wants to overpay, they let him walk.

Re: Olivier Vernon: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation on Free-Agent DE
Definitely better than the franchise tag. I'm not convinced any team is going to give Vernon a crazy deal, so most likely he stays in Miami IMO...I just hope they get a long-term deal done sooner rather than later, because that $12.7 million is not a good number for the team. Should be interesting to see what kind of interest Vernon gets...

This is just like the Clay deal. No picks required

Yep - my bad. Just edited my post...

If Hennehill's cut after this season then they'll be able to afford Vernon. Who would you guys rather have if you had to pick one?

Re: Olivier Vernon: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation on Free-Agent DE
So the Dolphins really, really like Olivier Vernon. A lot. Over $12 million worth.
But they don't love Olivier Vernon. Not to $15.7 million worth.
There is another side of this, too.
The Dolphins like Vernon and want to see him return. But they have identified a handful of pass rush options they believe they can get more cheaply to play at the level Vernon has shown his first four seasons with the team.
William Hayes, a pending free agent from the Los Angeles Rams, is a player the team likes very much. If Vernon walks, Hayes will be an option. Hayes, 30, had 5.5 sacks last season.
The Dolphins have strong conviction about being able to get a comparable -- maybe better player, they believe -- if they lose Vernon...
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2016/03/miami-dolphins-like-olivier-vernon-dont-love-olivier-vernon.html
so the Phins think they stand a really good chance at getting a player better than (or at least equal to) Vernon at a cheaper deal. interesting.

This gives me hope...I completely agree with that assessment.
Re: Olivier Vernon: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation on Free-Agent DE
My problem with Vernon and Wake are that neither get enough sacks to nullify their weakness against the run. Maybe the front office feels the same way.

I see the Raiders going in and giving him a boat load of money. They are way over the cap with 32 million to spare

It would not surprise me to see the Cowboys sign Vernon and Miller and make a "run" at the Super Bowl and use the draft pick on the QB of the future. But yeah I could see the Raiders sighing Vernon.

Not so sure about the Raiders paying big bucks for Vernon. Khalil Mack is outstanding, and they have a young up-and-comer on the other side in Mario Edwards. I think they need more DT and LB help than DE. But you never know...they do need to spend a lot of money.
Here in NY, a lot of people think the Giants will make a play for Vernon. They usually don't overpay free agents, so we'll see.
