James Walker wrote:Speaking of Tannehill, Gase said his quarterback will have the freedom to call audibles to plays in his system. This was a big topic of debate last year, as Tannehill didn’t have much freedom to get the offense out of bad plays under former coordinator Bill Lazor. Gase says Tannehill will gain more and more audible freedom as time goes on and they get more comfortable with each other.

Lets see how true this is. I don't know how many times we heard this last year.

I remember back in the 70's when I started watching Football, Qb's always were changing plays and Griese most of the time called his own plays and Bradshaw who they talked about being an idiot called most of the plays too.

in 2016 if a Quarterback can't change out of a Play that he knows has limited chance of being effective based on the defense that he see in front of him, Than You taking away a Chance for your offense to be successful and score points. which is what Philbin and Lazor successed at and now they are employed some where else not doing the same thing they were doing before.

Two things:

First, I read somewhere else that Gase said he'll give Tannehill as much responsibility as he can handle.  That makes sense - but I think Lazor had the same plan, and clearly Lazor didn't think Tannehill could handle too much responsibility.  So, we'll see.

Second, there's a difference between an audible and just changing a play.  Tannehill had the ability to change plays last season...he usually had a run play and a pass play, and could change based on what he saw from the defense.  However, the run and pass plays were both out of the same formation. What I would call a "true" audible is when the QB has the ability to completely change the play, including the formation and the protection.  Lazor did not let Tannehill do that.

Keep in mind - in a quick tempo offense, it's not really possible to change formations and protections...doing that slows things down and can also get confusing if you don't have the right personnel for the look the D is giving you.  So if we are going to run an up tempo offense, I don't know how much different Tannehill's responsibilities will really be at the line.  (And for the record, Lazor lied when he said Miami would run an up tempo offense - we never did, other than some two-minute stuff at the end of halves.)

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/02/25/adam-gase-were-going-to-go-through-a-process-with-ryan-tannehill/

Progression was a recurring theme in Gase’s comments about getting Tannehill moving in a better direction on the field.

“It’s not going to be like all of a sudden in two weeks we’re going to be like, all right, I got it,” Gase said, via the Miami Herald. “It’s going to take the entire spring. It’s going to take training camp. It’s going to take regular-season games. This is not going to be one of those things where I’m going to have a great feel for him right away. We’re going to have to go through a little bit of a process. There’s going to be bumps in the road, but that’s football.”

Bumps in the road are nothing new for the Dolphins, but it’s been a long time since they’ve been able to get through them to flatter ground. If Gase can move Tannehill to a higher plane, smoother sailing should be ahead in Miami.

So, let me get this straight. After FOUR years of being a starting QB in the NFL, we now must wait on the "process" to see development in our "franchise" QB to actually become what he is supposed to be?

I for one call bullshit to this.

We all know the excuses every year for this guy. I'm over it.

And NOW, the new coach is speaking of the "process"?

Does Gase not understand the history of this QB?????

I don't think that he cares about the history and what he can do with him now. If Gase can make Tannehill into a elite player than I down for it

Yeah, this Tannehill talk is getting to be ridiculous. It's nothing but excuses, over and over. Gase is already setting up excuses...I can see it already: by midseason, if Tannehill is struggling we'll hear about how it's a new system and he just needs time to develop. At some point everyone just has to realize that he is what he is. He'll be 50 years old and people will still be waiting for him to develop.

Exactly, it is just a setup. Another excuse. I'm over it.

It's an excuse, but it is a new system. I hope he succeeds in it quickly.

Well, if Jay Cutler can have success in this offense (and that's debatable IMO, although everyone else acts like he was Joe Montana under Gase) then it shouldn't take Tannehill years to adapt to it. Time to put up or shut up...so tired of all the excuses everyone makes for Tannehill.

Well If Tannehill sucks this season Miami can get him out of his contract and pick up a new QB next year.

Yes, beautifully written contract. I really hope they draft a QB.

I have a feeling the Phins won't draft a QB, but they definitely should.  Have to be prepared just in case Tannehill bombs or gets injured.

By this time next year Tannehill may well be just the FIFTH best QB of his draft class, behind Luck, Wilson, Cousins and Osweiler. And that's not even counting Nick Foles, who had a far better season than Tannehill ever will.
