Phins looking to trade for RB Empty Phins looking to trade for RB

Post by mercury22nathan Thu Mar 24, 2016 8:02 am

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2016/03/rb-needy-miami-dolphins-leaving-no-stone-unturned.html

The Miami Dolphins are exploring every option as they try to fill out their depleted running backs corps and that includes the possibility of getting a player via trade. The Dolphins have had conversations with multiple teams about trading for a back, a league source said from the NFL annual meeting Wednesday.

i'd be curious to know which backs they are looking at and what they're willing to give up.

found this interesting as well...

The Dolphins graded Anderson as a better player than Miller, per a club source, but nonetheless were able to sign Anderson to an offer sheet that averaged $4.5 million per season.

so it wasn't just about the money with Miller, it appears they felt there were better options from a talent perspective.

At this point, pretty much 2nd-tier guys. How bout a novel approach? Just draft a couple guys and maybe develop our own. I know, they did that with Lamar, but you just need to keep bringing in your own talent. Now, If Elliot is still there at 13, it should be a slam dunk. He's our guy.

I rather Miami draft a RB or two if necessary.

I'd, to quote DF316, SERIOUSLY, consider blowing the entire draft on OL and DL. I'm pretty much of the mind that you can get just about anybody to play RB anymore. Are there special talents at that position? Hell yes. Will we select one? No, we won't. That's not how we operate, and it's not an integral part of a QB-driven offense.

This may be Tannehill's undoing or it may catapult him forward, because if he can hack a good system then he should improve. If not, then it will be apparent that what they really needed to do (which is what I believe they need to do) is build a balanced running/passing attack, treating T-hill like Steve Deberg (which as of now is how I see Tannehill's career going) who needs a balanced attack to be effective. I think Gase's system will be another short-passing shitfest, but we shall see.

Assuming Elliot is off the board and trading down is not an option, this might be the best year ever to go meat and potatoes.

So many quality RBs in this draft...why trade for one?

But - it seems clear that the Phins aren't comfortable with Ajayi...so that's good news. Don't settle.

It seems to me Tannebaum is desperate for Miami to be in a position to draft BPA which I agree with but good lord if you are going to trade for a player, make it a guard.

Looks like the Phins are going to meet with Arian Foster this week.

I'm a big Foster fan, but the guy is always hurt. He's still recovering from an Achilles injury, so I don't think any team will sign him till well after the draft. Doesn't hurt to take a look...if/when he gets healthy, he's still a million times better than Ajayi.

That said, draft a damn RB!!! There's tons of quality backs in this draft...may be the deepest position overall.

I'm also hearing/reading lot of good backs in this draft. Hell, just pick up a couple UDFAs, and sign someone like Foster who you can probably get at least a few good games out of. Just don't pay him a lot, and don't sign him long term because he won't make it healthy.

Honestly, running back is just so low on my list. This team NEEDS better linebacker starters and depth, better corner starters and depth, and I would not mind at all if we draft a guard and the guy is a total stud, or if we draft a great DT and/or DE.

If you're going to be weak at a position, running back is probably the best choice.

I don't like the idea of Foster at all. Ever since he's turned vegan he's been oft injured.

I hear you on Foster - just can't stay healthy. I just don't want Ajayi to start...I'll take almost anyone over him.

I actually see RB as a huge need, because we've all seen that Tannehill needs a running game. He can't handle blitzes and pressure, so the best thing to do is establish a running game and get the defense to call off the dogs. If we can't run, Tannehill will be a sitting duck again. Lazor certainly didn't agree with me, but hopefully Gase will.

Tannehill with a rushing attack = slightly above average.

Tannehill WITHOUT a rushing attack = substantially below average IMHO.

Plus, with the defense looking like a weak point again....the less time the defense is on the field, the better.

That said, I doubt the Phins draft a guard early. They seem to think those mid-rounders are just the ticket. I mean, it has worked so well so far, hasn't it? Very Happy

RB - Eh, they need some depth, but I don't see anyone out there who makes me go "Alright!!" if they sign him. Draft one low and bring in some UFAs. Besides, if Ajayi can stay healthy, I think he may surprise this season.

The more I look at the roster, the more I think the Phins may not even draft OL.  We added three veterans in the offseason, and we have Thomas, Turner and Douglas in addition to Pouncey, Albert and James.  That's 9 linemen right there, and (sadly) I think the plan is for all those guys to be on the final roster.  Of course, things happen - players are worse than expected, injuries occur, etc. - but I don't think the Phins feel they need to add a draft pick to that mix.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the offseason plan was to build depth through free agency so they don't have to use picks on OL.  I'm fine with that in theory...but the reality is that all the guards we have are huge question marks.  I would prefer to dump Thomas and Douglas and add a quality guard in the draft...just not sure it's going to happen.

As for Ajayi, I see him as an ideal third down back when he learns how to pass protect.  But I don't see him as a starter.  I guess we'll see...but it does seem like the Phins want a starter.  They supposedly offered Miller $5 million a year, and they offered Anderson a contract that included $6.5 million in 2016.  Clearly, those guys would have been expected to start over Ajayi at those salaries.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, I would be totally okay going with Ajayi plus a couple or few UDFAs. Throw a bunch at a wall and see if they can stick.

Now, my one exception is Elliott. Graded out by Nawrocki(?) virtually the same as Gurley, a fraction of a point lower than him but within a rounding error. If he's that good, and he lasts to #13, I can't imagine a scenario where he is NOT the best player available. Figuring top players at other positions will be gone, and he will be head and shoulders above the remainders. So, in that case I would love to see us draft him. Just like I would have loved to see us get Gurley last year.

In my mind, it's either draft an elite back or go the other direction completely. Don't burn a 3rd, 4th or 5th on someone that may not pan out anyways. If you don't get Elliott, then go with UDFA at volume.

Aside from the injury I think Gurley was a much stronger prospect than Elliott, but there is no doubt that Elliott would be BPA if he fell to 13.  But, given the relative weakness of this draft overall (IMO), I think he'll be gone long before 13 - possibly to the Eagles at 8.

But yes, I agree - if we don't get Elliott I'd wait till later in the draft or after the draft - should be a lot of intriguing backs available late, and in fact I think there will be options late that are better prospects than Ajayi.

Meh. At least the past few shitty offseasons looked good on paper. This one can't even manage that. It's gotten to the point where I'd rather hear about Trump ordering people to be beaten and arrested at his "rallies" to be honest.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/03/28/pro-3-areas-of-need-for-dolphins-following-offseason-departures/

Lamar Miller signed a four-year, $26 million ($14 guaranteed) contract with the Houston Texans in a move that surprised few following the team. Despite being PFF’s fifth-highest-graded running back in 2015 and ranking near the top of the league in average yards per carry since being drafted in 2012, Miller was underutilized time and time again in Miami.

Miller carried the ball 20 times in a game just once in 2015, and carried less than 10 times in six different games. In fact, when Miller carried the ball at least 13 times, the Dolphins were 6-1, a testament to how valuable of a role he played on the team.

Miami has insisted that they view 2015 fifth-round pick Jay Ajayi as a three-down back, but their four-year, $18 million proposed contract to restricted free agent C.J. Anderson suggested otherwise.

Anderson broke onto the scene in 2014 and was PFF’s fourth-highest graded running back that year, essentially putting the team on his back over the final eight weeks of the season. Anderson was far less effective in 2015, but ultimately the Denver Broncos matched his contract and retained his services.

After letting Miller walk and swinging and missing on Anderson, the Dolphins turned their attention to Chris Johnson, only to watch him re-sign with the Arizona Cardinals. Alfred Morris then went on to sign with the Dallas Cowboys, leaving Arian Foster, Stevan Ridley, and LeGarrette Blount as the top backs remaining on the market.

With the number of free-agent running backs dwindling, the Dolphins may now be forced to turn their attention to the draft to fill the void. Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott would be an ideal fit for the franchise in the first round; however, he may not be on the board when they pick at 13 (a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles dropped them five spots).

And that sums up the train wreck of a dumpster fire that is the current Miami Dolphins. (Slaps forehead.)

You guys know that for years I've said "you don't need an elite line to win".  I still believe that.  But what kills me is the complete inability of the Phins to build an OL that even approaches mediocrity!  If we could just rise to the level of mediocrity, that would be a huge boost.  Instead, we continually field one of the wosrt OLs in the league...so bad, that even "below average" would be a step up.

And I don't want to hear the crap about "oh, we were 6-1 when Albert, Pouncey and James were all healthy".  You can't count on these guys staying healthy, especially Albert, and having crappy veteran backups isn't going to help.  Plus, we continue to ignore the guard position as if it doesn't matter.  Watching the Dolphins the past few years, clearly guard DOES matter...and continuing to push Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner and Jamil Douglas out there is an epic fail.  Turner, at least, has some upside - at tackle IMO.  The other two just look like lost causes that should be doing anything other than playing football.

It's mind-boggling that the Dolphins can't (and won't) find upgrades.  How many pints of blood does Tannehill have to piss before the OL is adequately addressed????

LOL! For some reason this really struck me funny. So true. He's taken a total beating and we still refuse to address the pressure coming right up the gut into his face.

And again - all we need to do is adequately address the guard positions...we don't need All Pros, just legit starting-caliber linemen.  Sure, let's sign a QB guru as the head coach, but keep Dallas Thomas...that makes sense.  No

I'd love to draft Graham Glassgow C/G from Michigan in the 4th. He could easily start at guard and fill in for Pouncey when he gets hurt and replace Pouncey next year. Pouncey, Albert and James injuries were the biggest problems with the OL and I expect Pouncey and Albert to be injury prone for the remainder of their careers.

I like Glasgow a lot, and I agree - he would be a day one starter at guard, and then he could move to center if and when the Phins finally realize that Pouncey's production doesn't match his pricetag.

Totally agree on Pouncey.

Wasn't it last year we heard a report through the locker room that Albert challenged him for not being strong enough, in other words not spending enough time in the weight room? And he agreed with the assessment after getting called out?

Yeah, way to be a leader and earn that big salary, Pouncey. I mean come on man. Why is it that even when we do manage to draft someone with pro-bowl caliber talent, they turn into a lazy bum or bitch all the time? What happened to the guys like Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Brock Marion. Surtain, Madison? Unreal.

Saw a picture of Pouncey from this weeks Dolphin golf tournament. Let's just say that lazy mofo has been skipping leg day for years. If he spent half as much time in the weight room as he does in the tattoo parlor he'd actually earn his pay.
