Lucky bastards
I know I've told this many times before, but that just happened to be the night the town I lived in decided to hold their lame Christmas parade (I cannot tell you how much I loathe parades, along with banquets and luncheons) and my parents made me go. I couldn't say no because I was 12, and we didn't get back home until the first half was almost over. I tuned in just in time to see the blocked punt, and I remember seeing the lone second half score off the ricochet but then after that I had to go to bed
At least my DolFan grandparents sent me plenty of newspaper clippings on the game afterwards. I still have them and every other one they sent me on various Fins games from '85-97.

True. Definitely right up there among my favorites. Too bad we didn't get a Super Bowl rematch with them; we sure as hell weren't going to lose 46-10.

I vote that AFC title game loss to the Pats the most devastatingly depressing defeat in Fins history. I honestly don't see a case for any other loss. The infamous MNF Jets game? Just a regular season one, and the Fins won the division anyway with the Jets missing the playoffs. The 62-7 Jags game? That Fins team wasn't going anywhere anyway. I always say that Pats loss is proof the NFL at least at that time wasn't fixing games, because that's the one game they'd have tried to make sure Miami won since a Fins-Bears SB would've set a ratings record unsurpassed by any other show in TV history. I don't believe that, I KNOW it.
What still blows my mind over 30 years later is that in both regular season games the Fins held a 2-score 4th quarter lead, yet in this game they got blown out from the get go. I just can't get past that. I honestly could've handled a SB loss to the Bears a lot better.

It was the most painful loss for me too. I have to say, more painful than either 1980s Super Bowl loss.
Patriots finally figured out that they should just basically run the ball against us every down after Cleveland did that and almost ended our 8 game winning streak to get there. With Duhe and Baumhower gone all year the defense was fatally flawed; in hindsight Shula getting that 1985 team to 12-4 and within a game of the Super Bowl might have been his greatest coaching job. I mean, add to that Duper missing half the season with a broken leg and Marino getting off to a wobbly start after holding out all training camp.
