According to PFF. Apparently Vernon's so great the Giants jumped up to #12 by adding him Rolling Eyes

The sad part is, this may be the highest team ranking the Fins get.

you would think, wouldn't ya? but PFF ranked the Phins' units as follows:

QB: 21
RB: 30
WR: 25
OL: 19
Front 7: 22
DB: 18

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-2016-season-preview-miami-dolphins/

oddly, the 2 units which appear to be the weakest by far with question marks about starters - OL and DB - have been rated as the Phins 2 highest position units relative to the rest of the league. that makes no sense at all to me?!?!

Rankings aside, I like some of the analysis they did when writing up their justifications. Interesting offseason read anyways.

Looking forward to some preseason action.

I want to see this Doughty kid in action. Already intriguing that Gase made the comment "he seems to have a knack for finding open receivers." To me, this is one glaring weakness in Tannehill's game, his field vision seems to be average at best.

Until the Miami DL proves they can stop the run, they're not making anyone's top 10. It's a passing league nowadays, and the second a team knows they can run on you...it's all over. Playaction knocks the shit out of a D that can't defend the run...wear them down with the run, and then its pitch and catch all day.

And that's why giving Suh all that money was stupid. As good as he is against the pass, he's that weak against the run. Until the new-look D proves otherwise, teams are going to try to exploit Suh and make his teammates stop the run. And if the D can't handle the run, does anyone really think our shitty secondary is going to hold up against playaction? U-G-L-Y.

The Miami offense at least has some pieces in place at WR and maybe RB if the Foster/Ajayi combo holds up...but it's the D that scares me most. The front 4 could be good, but the back 7 scares the hell out of me.

I know you guys don't like Veron but at the same time I think that he would have been a good keeper. The price that the Giants paid for him was ridiculous but at the same time they did get a good pickup

The Dolphins should have worked out an extension for Vernon long before he hit free agency.  They could have gotten him much cheaper than the Giants did.

I'm not the biggest Vernon fan, but he was a solid player and it sucks to lose good young players that you developed.

While true it would have been nice to see us retain Vernon, may be an unrealistic scenario given the demand for pass rushing DEs in today's game.

I trust the analysis I read when he was a pending free agent. He's an end that does not create pocket disruption often enough to warrant the big money paid to guys like Suh, Wake and JJ Watt, players who do regularly create their own penetration and pressure on the QB.

However, his agent would go in hard (like he did during FA) on the raw stats - pressures and sacks - even though the analysis pointed out he was much more likely to "clean up" a play where the pocket was compromised by another rusher. Most likely Wake or Suh.

The disparity between the agents viewpoint and our own makes it highly unlikely an agreement would have been stricken.

Either the Giants are right and we missed the boat, or they paid JJ Watt money to a player who is nowhere near in the same league. For my money, on this one I think the Fins were right. A nice player, but we still would have needed a premier end on the other side for him to truly be effective. Really no different from the position we are in now. We need a young DE with potential to turn into a blue chip pass rushing threat, with ideal size and power.

If the Fins didn't constantly throw money at almost every big name FA every ofseason, then they'd have the cap room to re-sign their own rare good draft picks.

Can't argue with any of that. Vernoin is certainly a flawed player in my book. But, he is a pretty good ypoung player who is still developing and may have his best fottball ahead of him. I hate to see homegrown talent get away, since it is pretty rare in this era of Miami Dolphins football.
