Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
It's early but...the OL doesn't seem to be any better YET. I do want to stress the "YET"...it's way too early to panic. But I've read stories and tweets all over the net today about how the Dolphins' OL got absolutely abused and dominated all day today. Couldn't pass protect, couldn't run block. Considering that the first preseason game is next week, if nothing else it's definitely a cause for concern - again.
Dallas Thomas is STILL the starting LG. Tunsil, who was labeled as the OL's savior, hasn't been able to beat him out yet. Tunsil should not be playing guard in the first place, but it looks like we have yet another Dolphin coaching staff that loves the 'square peg, round hole' strategy. Ugh.
Here's Dave Hyde's take:

Dave Hyde wrote:Because no NFL team has invested more in its offensive line than the Dolphins. Four No. 1 picks? And not just first-rounders. All four came in the top 20 (including Branden Albert, who was drafted by Kansas City but was a financial investment for the Dolphins in free agency).
That's an obscene investment to be beaten like they were Monday, even in camp. With as shabbily as the line has played in recent years, it's like it's expected. No one even blinked.
Consider: Defending Super Bowl champion Denver has only one first-round pick on its starting offensive line. AFC East king New England and NFC champion Carolina have invested in one each, too.
Yes, it's too early to conclude anything, and it's a new offense, and no one's sounding the alarm just because Tannehill had little time to pass in Monday's practice.
Just like he didn't this time last year. Or the years before. And, really, how great was that defensive line come the season in recent years?
So, if not the alarm, should we at least give a wake-up call to this offensive line?
Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
Well, unless I am totally wrong, I expect this team to STRUGGLE to get to 6-10 again.
And that is even if the O-line gels and is not the total shathole it was last season.
I just keep wondering, "What EXACTLY are these NFL "Professionals" seeing in Dallas Thomas that my admittedly "AMATURE" and "non-professional" eyes seeing?"
I keep thinking I must be missing something, then the games start, and you see what an absolute disaster he is, and....
Anyway...It is possible to HIDE one big glaring hole on the O-line. Not entirely, but it can be mitigated somewhat. Maybe Gase can do that.

The running backs will have their hands full staying in to block for old traffic cone.

That's an interesting point, because Ajayi and Drake are simply not good blockers at this stage. And neither are any of the TEs, for that matter. Tannehill may actually be under pressure even more this season. Hope I'm wrong, but as I've said several times - I think this is the year it all catches up with Tannehill, and he gets a serious injury.

Aloha Everyone it's been awhile for me. Football is on us and it's time to get into it.
I agree the too much tinkering even in preseason is far too much. I think you play the best ones. And see what happens. Not trying to reinvent the wheel here. Just let them gel. In my opinion it should be Albert, Tunsil, Pouncey, Bushrod, James. Period

I agree. All this shuffling people around and having guys learn 2-3 positions does nothing but create more chaos and uncertainty. Nowadays there's hardly any practice time, so get your starting 5 set as soon as possible and give them plenty of time to gel. Seems like the Phins do this crap every year no matter who the coaches are, and the OL always sucks.
Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
As far as turner and Thomas I don't eat any opinions from so called observers. IMHO they had 1, just 1, only 1 and none other then 1 frickin padded practice. I highly doubt that there's a helluva lot of technique to observe

The problem is that Miami is still looking for a player that can play all positions and not one position. Tunsil is going to struggle because they will make him struggle.

Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
The real issue is the coaching carousel that keeps happening. When you think about it our rushing attack with Sparano was Jake Long, Evan Mathis, Samson Satele, Donald Thomas/Ndukwe, Vernon Carey! Only 1 1st rounder of the bunch....this year we have 4 but can't figure shit out! If you're a first round talent then fuck it you start till you fuck up consistently. Plain and simple but everyone (coaches) seemingly think that the true test of their fucking coaching manhood is finding the guy in the jungle reintroduce him to he civilized world and teach him 9 languages all the whilst becoming an all pro lineman for the Miami fuckin dolphins it's really pitiful

Technicall Carey was a first rounder but who takes a right tackle in the first round ? We did it twice and the second one (James ) missed more games then he played

tinkering with the OL will not end anytime soon...

so Dallas Thomas getting starting reps is more about getting Tunsil reps at LT, than Thomas out playing him? Thomas understands the system better - but not that much better? umm, have any of these coaches actually looked at the putrid film of Thomas over the last couple years?
so naturally the Phins are forcing him to play guard. or are they? could it be that they are giving Tunsil so much work at LT in hopes that he can supplant Albert sooner rather than later? Could this be a Jack Del Rio / Zach Thomas type, late training camp surprise in the making?
For the first week of training camp, beleaguered veteran Dallas Thomas has opened practice as the starting left guard, ahead of first-round pick Laremy Tunsil, with Tunsil always getting some first-team work at left guard later in practice.
But why aren’t the Dolphins letting their ballyhooed first-round pick take the majority of snaps with the starters? Offensive line coach Chris Foerster on Thursday cited Thomas’ experience and knowledge, the staff’s desire to give Tunsil some snaps at left tackle, and other factors.
Foerster, asked about using Thomas over Tunsil, cited “guys that have been here, guys that are doing better in drill work, guys that understand the offense better…. Dallas has been here and understands it a little better. But not that much better.
“Obviously, there’s a learning curve for everybody. At this point, we are letting Dallas roll, although Tunsil is taking some. A lot of it has to do with how we’re trying to get Laremy reps in other positions… If it’s a day we’re trying to get Tunsil more at left tackle, that affects everybody in the rotation.”

Offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said he doesn’t know if Tunsil will start the Sept. 11 opener at Seattle. “He’s going to be a really fine left tackle at whatever point, but there is a learning curve for him at guard,” Christensen said.

I'm gonna start selling tickets to the "Idiot Circus" real soon. Reporters make coaches sound so ridiculous.
So reporter asks about Tunsil and the coach basically responds his number 1 pick says a guy who was part of the team that has lead the league in sacks the last three years is better because he knew his assignments but the sacks says he couldn't do it. way too fuckin hilarious for me this early in hawaii

Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
In retrospect Tunsil missing last season should've been far more of a red flag than the infamous video. Missing a season because of injury is one thing, but players tend to never recover from literally sitting out a year. I just have a feeling Tunsil simply won't be all that good and 3 years from now the Fins will be mocked by every media outlet around who will conveniently forget that before the video Tunsil was considered a surefire top 5 pick if not the top pick altogether.
That having been said, all this constant position switching is absurd. It's like graduating from college, getting a job in the field you majored in, and then on your first day being told you won't be doing anything related to your major at all, but something totally different that you've never tried before. Insane, right? Well then, why do some people think it's perfectly fine for NFL teams to do this?

I don't care if Tunsil starts day one or not. I want at least an average O-line for once, dammit. Tired of can't run, can't pass protect, can't move the ball because our line is so weak.
If Thomas starts that's fine - as long as the line is playing well as a unit. To date in this camp, they haven't been.

Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
yes finally, the 1st pick is elevated to starting status...
so of course this means that Dallas Thomas has finally been vanquished to the bench...umm...
ehh, what? so no matter what happens or who is out there, Thomas somehow finds a spot with the starters?!?!
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/2016/08/tuesday-dolphins-nuggets-the-jarvis-landry-conundrum-and-miamis-desire-to-get-others-involved-lots-o.html
how is this possible????
Laremy Tunsil opened team drills as the starting left guard – the first time he has done that...
so of course this means that Dallas Thomas has finally been vanquished to the bench...umm...
...with Dallas Thomas at right guard. But Tunsil returned to the second team later in practice, with Thomas and Billy Turner the first-team guards.

Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
Gase talks about players earning a starting job. But apparently that doesn't apply to Thomas, who never did earn his. Therefore, I can't take what Gase says seriously.

Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
The inconsistency stems from then inconsistent lineups. In essence the coaches are creating the gap between starters and backups. I don't need 5mil a year to figure this shit out. Fuck me man I can't take this shit Albert, THOMAS, Pouncey, TURNER, James, have somehow given up the MOST sacks in the NFL in the last 4 years. I don't give a flying fuck how they practice what you see in practice has not translated in the game, so I ask you WHAT DA FUUUUUCKKK???

Tell us how you really feel Umix
It's almost like there's a disconnect between the coach and GM, with the coach refusing to play the GMs draftees out of spite. You know, like pretty much the last 4 seasons. I at least thought that garbage was done when Philbin left. I get the feeling Gase only trotted out Tunsil with the first team to get everybody off his back and then put Thomas back in as a big fuck you to the fans and media and Tannenbaum. I see right through you, Gase!
Only a matter of time before the inevitable 4 wins or worse season followed by Gase getting an extension followed by Ross firing him midway through the '17 season after Tannebaum gets pissed that Gase won't start the guys he keeps throwing picks away for in the draft.
So predictable...

Listen, last year there was hype because the defensive line was so Effn awesome people started making milky ways in their pants. This year? Same hype. OMG, we are comparing this shit to the fucking crappiest line in the nfl the last 4 years. We can throw warren sapps broke ass out there and this line will make him look like he could be drafted in 2017 with the first pick of the first round!!!! What in the hell is in the water at that training facility

It sounds like Miami is going through the same thing that they did last year. The Defensive line dominates the OL then when they play against a real opponent they suck.

We've spent a lot of picks on terrible players, and now we have a shitty line. It's easy to see.

Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
Reading camp tweets today...seems like the D must have about 50 sacks today. Not sure what Golden Boy Gase can do to fix the OL, but he needs to do something immediately. And I don't think making Tunsil a starter will be enough.
Re: Meet the Dolphins' new OL...same as the old OL???
I'm sick to my stomach thinking this is Foerster's coaching skills coming home to roost.
Remember when we brought him on? Somebody said his lines have been terrible throughout his career. We needed an offensive line coach the OPPOSITE of "Terribad" to fix this line.
I'm hoping this is Gase's first coaching fire. And I hope it's midseason this year. Foerster sucks.
