Phillips=tannenbaum

Post by CarsonChris on Mon May 11, 2015 12:03 am

The draft room had an argument over our second round pick. Hickey wanted a running back. Tannenbaum wanted Phillips. Tannenbaum won the argument.

So was Coleman still available? I'd say Coleman vs. Phillips is a pretty solid argument. I like the Phillips gamble but if the pick was Coleman I would side with the Hickster.

Well, I guess if anyone still didn't believe it, we officially know this is Tannenbaum's team.

I hated the idea of Tannenbaum in Miami at first, but it appears that he learned a thing or two in his time away from the NFL. The thing I like most about him is that he's aggressive. I think this team has been too wishy-washy over the years, and it's nice to have a guy in charge that knows how to make things happen.

It is acually funny because Tannenbaum stated that Hickey had the last say. Miami could have had Cobbs, Johnson, Coleman. I mean there were a lot of RB that was still available in the draft.

Not that this is the reason, but Tannenbaum did have to work with Rex and his ground-and-pound, win with defense philosophy, so maybe that had something to do with it.

I'd lean towards a little from Column A and a little from Column B.

Sounds like Phillips took part of the minicamp off. He showed the under motivated play that he was guilty of in college. That's why he had the most body fat of anyone tested during the combine. He's Lazy. Sad that our front office says one thing about what they are looking for and does another.

I predict Phillips eats his way out of the NFL!

No doubt Phillips is a gamble BUT when considering the potential reward I'm all in.

i'm curious CC, where did that come from? was it in an article? do we have a link? i haven't heard this anywhere else - just wondering where it come from.

I believe it's in this article from Omar Kelly, which I can no longer open:

I read that Phillips was #1 on Hickey's board at that time. Hickey started to waffle and Tannenballs made Hickey stick to his board. Fascinating.

I can certainly understand Phillips being BPA at that point...a lot of people (including me) had him as a first rounder. If we hadn't traded down, there were other players I liked better that could have been a better fit for the Phins IMO, but I'm definitely on board with BPA.

I wish we still had Kacy Rodgers coaching the D-line...if anyone could light a fire under Phillips, it would be him.

from the article JMP linked...

According to a team source, the Dolphins didn't expect Phillips to fall that far. While defensive tackle wasn't an immediate need, executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum felt like the team couldn't pass on a talent like Phillips because nose tackles are hard to find.

The source said general manager Dennis Hickey had his sights set on selecting a tailback in the second round and was scared off by Phillips' work ethic. After a pretty contentious debate between the GM and his boss, Tannenbaum got his way, and Phillips was selected, even though Hickey has final say on the Dolphins' personnel.

Oh, so I'm not the only one that expects Mangini to be the Dolphins' head coach next season?

Mangini actually has an amazing football mind, but he's been shit as a head coach so far. If he could put it together, he could be great. . . but how often does that happen?

I do think Mangini is a very good, and potentially great, coach. He's got one major problem as I see it: he has the personality of a block of wood and he's awkward in front of a camera...which of course means he's perfect for the Phins!

You can probably get them for real if you know how to use the Freedom Of Information Act. But you'll have to ask for Tannenbaum since as far as I know there's nobody named Tannemball in existence Razz Laughing

All brains and no people skills whatsoever. Remember Ray Handley? Anybody who actually remembers Eric Hipple should remember Handley Smile He had the same problem.

I'm going to weigh in on Phillips (see what I did there?) and say it's actually a good thing he admitted his laziness. Seriously. The first step towards solving a problem is admitting you have one, and this is far better than the lying, denying and excuse making most other people in his situation would make. There's actual hope for Phillips now. That doesn't necessarily mean the issue will be solved, but at least now it can be.

Oh I remember Ray Handley. I have a friend who's a Giants fan, and they refer to him as "the coach who shall not be named." I remember him saying after a game once something to the effect of, "I know I was wrong, and I'd do it again."

Ray Handley and Rich Kotite could possibly be the worst two modern-day coaches ever . . . well, and Cam Cameron.

Cam was definitely worse than those two. I still remember Handley beating the Niners in the '91 opener (and thinking that meant he wouldn't actually be that bad a coach) and believe it or not Kotite actually coached a playoff team in '92 and had the Iggles 7-2 in '94 before imploding to 7-9. Cam meanwhile was a Brian Billick fraidy-cat decision away from 0-16. And the local Fins media were actually wanting him to be retained the next season because of too much change being bad, or something Shocked Rolling Eyes

"He's got one major problem as I see it: he has the personality of a block of wood and he's awkward in front of a camera.."

To be fair, that also describes the 1991-1993 version of Belicheck. Remember the Kosar/waivers fiasco? (That resulted in Todd Freaking Philcox, starting quarterback for a week!)
