good news, bad news on the defense

good news...
...well, at least the bit about a desire to upgrade over Jenkins and Misi is definitely good news.
bad news...
good news...
The Dolphins have been very pleased with linebacker Kiko Alonso and current sentiment would to re-sign him and upgrade over Jelani Jenkins and replace injured Koa Misi.

bad news...
Cornerback Xavien Howard says he’s not close to returning from knee surgery.

Re: good news, bad news on the defense
I guess I'm in the minority. I think Alonso has been borderline-bad. He gets easily blocked and most of his tackles come well beyond the line of scrimmage. He looks lost in coverage and the angles he takes are often head-scratching. He's a so-so tackler and rarely makes an impact play. On the plus side, he does eventually get to the ball and he plays with a lot of enthusiasm.
Maybe he'd be better outside, but as a MLB I've been very unimpressed with Alonso this season.

Alonso is like Bob Brudzinsky. It looks like he's doing really great because he's always around the ball, but being around the ball doesn't mean you're making a big play. It just means you had a really nice seat to watch the game.

I've no problem with Kiko at WLB. But come on, he's just too small for the middle.

Yeah, very much so. He's not really physically suited to being inside at all.

Re: good news, bad news on the defense
I don't remember thinking he was small when he was on the Bills. Maybe he lost weight after all the injuries? Regardless, right now he looks like a very small safety - certainly not a MLB.
Re: good news, bad news on the defense
I think Alonso would be a good MLB if he were in the right scheme. 3-4 maybe but in a 4-3 he's better suited the Weakside.
Again this defense is not the right fit for him because he's ASKED to shed blocks because the front 4 is always moving upfield.
Suh is a far more penetrating defender then Daryl Gardner and Tim Bowens. But the later was asked to stand lineman up and let Thomas clean up. I think Alonso in the middle of a 4-3 like that could have success.
Alonso is not a playmaker in this scheme because he gets exposed to lineman who have whiffed at the attacking front 4.

Xavier has been a bust because of his injury to his knee. Miami might need to go after Haden from the Browns or Banks that was just released from Tampa.

Banks is interesting...young playmaker that sometimes struggles in coverage. I like him more than Culliver and Benwikere, so I'd be on board if the Phins are able to get him.

He's a rookie right now. He has been injured. Just a bit premature to call him a bust IMHO. we really haven't seen what he can or can't do. He missed significant time in the preseason and now missing some time. Its hard to tell but he did some good things when he was playing.
Haden's contract is too much for us to absorb. The only way it would work is if they could take somebody with a like contract. They drafted Shelton so Suh is out. Wake could be viable but at 34 he's only good for pick not a player. I dread giving away picks but at 27 the browns would look either at multiple picks or a package with a pick and Wake.

Come on man! No bust talk to he's cut.
BTW, Lippett is improving at a pretty impressive rate. So corner might have to wait considering needs at DT and LB.

Miami depth at DT is pretty deep already, Miami needs is LB and some better DB

Maybe he'd be better outside, but as a MLB I've been very unimpressed with Alonso this season.
I would love to see this happen in the offseason, seems like a natural fit. Given the current state of our depth chart at LB, I can understand playing him in the middle for now. If and when we dump Jenkins and Misi, Alonso needs to slide over to weakside.

I don't agree with this. We have a lot of bodies at DT, but none are good enough to benefit from the constant attention Suh draws. I'd clean house there, and look for players in the draft plus journeymen in free agency. Probably too soon to give up on Phillips, but he has been a disappointment to say the least.
A big, space-eating anchor like Solai would look really good next to Suh, maybe we can find someone like him that's not too expensive, or in a day 2/3 draft pick.

That's the biggest issue at DT - we don't have a huge run-blocking specialist at DT, at all. Most of our DTs are smaller, more athletic types.
As for Phillips, he's decent - nothing more. I think he's a keeper, but we certainly need more quality depth behind Suh and Phillips. We're VERY thin behind those two.
And then there's DE...where we essentially have no one worthwhile other than an aging Wake. That's yet another gaping hole on this defense.

Branch might be worth keeping, depending on the contract demands. According to Vance, giving Branch the starting spot was a catalyst to the defense playing better, along with Wake.
That doesn't change the need though. I'd be fine if our first round pick is used on a good, solid, pass rushing defensive end. You're looking at probably dumping Mario, dumping Jones, and Fede has probably come as far as he ever will. No real good youth at the spot.
Notice I have not even uttered the name of that bust we drafted from Oregon. Not even worth consideration.

IMO, Branch is a JAG. Decent against the run, mostly a non-factor as a pass rusher. Typical Dolphin...not bad, but not very good either.
Fede sucks...no idea why/how he stays on the team.

In any workplace, there's a real benefit to being bad, but bad in a way that nobody notices and you might as well be invisible. If anybody reads newspaper comics, think Wally from Dilbert.
Thomas and Turner's mistake was being bad in the bad way that stands out for the whole world to see.

Branch is having a better season than Vernon. Branch should also surpass 7.5 sacks. A number that made Vernon filthy rich. Very nice bargain in my book.
Vernon has compiled 15 hurries, 23 tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble in 8 starts; and Branch has had 9 hurries, 17 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble in 2 starts.

I have to agree Miami got these two guys and are no where near playing.
