Dolphins’ QB Ryan Tannehill finally starting to shine under Adam Gase
Dave Holcomb wrote:In September, it didn’t look like the Miami Dolphins would win six games all season, but now, they’re winners of six in a row, which is the longest current streak in the AFC.
Defense and a strong running game were the keys to Dolphins’ resurgence when they initially turned around their 1-4 start. Running back Jay Ajayi rushed for over 200 yards in consecutive weeks and the defense recorded 12 sacks in a four-game span.
But the past couple of weeks, quarterback Ryan Tannehill has come around, too.
That was the expectation when Miami hired quarterback whisperer Adam Gase as head coach last offseason. As a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator in the past five years, the 38-year-old had worked with quarterbacks spanning all different types of styles – from Peyton Manning to Tim Tebow – and had success. In one season as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator, even Jay Cutler improved.
The same was supposed to happen with Tannehill. When it didn’t after the first month of 2016, fans were ready to ride off the franchise quarterback, the youngest head coach in the league, or both. In the first five games of the year, Tannehill had more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (six).

Yes it is.
For a number of reasons.
One, there are no ready alternatives to Tannehill. Starting over at QB means probably 2-3 years before contending again.
Two, there are several positions on this team where we really need an upgrade. This coming draft could net a pro bowl caliber CB, guard, defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, or tight end. An upgrade at several of these positions will result in a much more solid roster.
Three, we may have the best QB in the division very soon. I'm not sure if many fans have noticed given our winning streak, but Brady is legitimately banged up and he struggled against the Jets last week. Father Time will eventually catch up to him. The Jets and Bills are still searching for the answer.
Finally, I love the fact that we have a QB that can also run the ball. We saw what Kaepernick did to us last week. Tannehill made a couple big plays in the same game. converting first downs with his legs - one of which looked to be a sure sack that he escaped. As he continues to evolve, defenses will have to respect him as a dual threat. All that much harder to defend.

Brady has shown zero signs of slowing down, and may be playing the best football of his career right now - so I don't know how soon we'll be talking about Tannehill as the best in the division.
Regardless, Tannehill has played his best football over the last 3 or so games, and he looks to be developing into the type of QB we all hoped he'd be when he was drafted. Hopefully, he has turned the corner for good, and this isn't just fool's gold. I'm curious to see how he does in December when the Dolphins need to beat quality teams and divisional opponents to make the playoffs. In the past, he has failed miserably in those situations - so we'll find out soon how much he's really improved.

Tannehill and this team's chances are linked, but not one and the same.
First, our defense did not play well against the 49ers at all, and we have serious shortcomings at linebacker, CB, and DT. Flacco, Tyrod Taylor, Watkins, McCoy, Brady, Brandon Marshall, Palmer-Fitzgerald all remain on the schedule, and all have a chance to do serious damage against our defense. We will have to play much better on defense to help our undermanned offense.
It's bad enough we are missing 3 offensive line starters. Bushrod is showing signs of wearing down as well. Now, we have Parker hurt again. Landry has not been 100% all year. The tight ends will have to step up big time, and we've only seen glimpses of that happen to date. Plus, they'll likely spend more time blocking to help our struggling line. Baltimore, Jets, Buffalo all have excellent defenses that could turn games into a nightmare for Tannehill.
There are more than enough problems on this team that could have us finishing 1-4 or worse. The difference, IMO is that it won't be coaching, motivation, or Tannehill's play. More likely, it will be problems on defense, and an injury depleted and overmatched roster on offense. Coaching helped us overcome the 49ers defense, scoring 31 points has to be viewed as a success there. But we all saw that our running game won't work with the backups we have on the line, especially with teams making their number 1 priority shutting Ajayi down and making us one dimensional.
Am I optimistic? Yes. But more so from what Gase has shown us he can do, even with a very flawed and injury depleted roster. More so for the future, versus right now.
Optimistic yes, but also a realist.

And don't forget David Johnson on the Cards...arguably the best player in the league, and a matchup nightmare for Miami's D.

Absolutely - although I still think Tannehill's play can be our downfall. I'm not convinced that he has completely turned the corner yet. A lot of those near-INTs I mentioned elsewhere could kill him against the remaining teams on our schedule, and if things aren't perfect around him I can definitely see him regressing. If the line play doesn't improve, defenses like the Ravens, Bills, Jets and Pats won't be as easy to block - and we all know that Tannehill becomes an awful QB when protection breaks down.
But yeah, I do trust this coaching staff to at least scheme us into positive situations...we may still fail, but as you say, it hopefully won't be because the coaches have their heads up their asses.

I agree that what we've seen this season has me much more optimistic about the future than it does the present. I just don't think we have enough talent to compete righht now. But if the coaching staff is in fact the real deal, we are in excellent shape moving forward. Now, we just have to hope that Tannenbaum doesn't sink the ship with poor talent acquisition.
Re: Dolphins’ QB Ryan Tannehill finally starting to shine under Adam Gase
So I have been reading up on the next two opponents. The Ravens are going to be Miami toughest matchup between the two. From what it sounds like the Cards OL is worst than Miami and their WR aren't doing to well. IMO, Miami toughest opponents in these final weeks are going to be the Ravens, Bills and Pats.
I have to agree as well. How long can Miami hold on to winning with Tannehill running the show. I am mostly surprised that Tannehill is doing so well. only 1 INT in these last 6 games is amazing, Plus he has had two TD a game. This is amazing.

Just imagine, if he has turned the corner, how will it translate when we become an actual good team, talent-wise.
