2017 draft Empty 2017 draft

Post by CarsonChris Tue Dec 13, 2016 10:27 pm

How do you guys see the team needs?

1. LB, to me is top priority. We need an upgrade. Someone that splits the gap and finds the ball behind the line of scrimmage. Also needs to be a coverage linebacker
2. DB, It's still a passing league and we need starters and depth.
3. Linemen, Center being the top priority. Pouncey's replacement hasn't cut it. Guards, both sides. Need more depth.
4. Pass rushing specialist. Wake is getting long in the tooth. Really have nobody besides him that''s a threat.

All of those are needs, agreed. It's which ones we fix with FAs that I'm wondering about. I'm not sure there's enough money/picks to go round to plug all the holes. I'm thinking they will not worry as much about a center because they already have Pouncey, even though he rarely plays an entire season.

Me? I'd fix both lines first, then LBs, then everything else that needs depth/fixing, but if I can only fix one, I'm fixing the offensive line. I'd rather have a balanced attack that scores points than defense, and that hurts me to say being that I'm a big defensive guy. Just right now, in this league, defenses are hamstrung by penalties because they need (the league) to manufacture more points, so there's a (hush-hush) mandate to keep the ball moving.

I believe LB and then edge rusher are 1 & 2 but after studying the various big boards I believe the best option is Pat Elflein C/G from OSU. Then in round two there's a DE from Illinois Dewaune Smoot who I really like.

Based on where I believe we will pick, LB presents no value in round 1.

How do you guys see the team needs?

We have enough problems on our roster, that we will need to use both the draft and FA to fill them all.

I do believe in building the trenches first, so in order, this is how I would address the problems this offseason.

1. We need two guards. Preferably, one of them will be a C/G to account for two possibilities. Either Pouncey goes down, or Albert does and we have to move Tunsil over to LT. I'm assuming we will enter the season with both healthy. Our running game will be key again in 2017, so build the line and make Ajayi an even better threat.

2. We need a new DE. Wake is long in the tooth. Retaining Branch would not be a bad move, he's making plays out there. If there is a high prospect available in round 1 or 2 for us, he has to get strong consideration. Cannot have enough pass rushers. Please don't anger me by uttering the name of that bust from Oregon. Any plans that account for him contributing are a fantasy.

3. We need a new DT. It's shameful what Phillips and Mitchell have failed to do with Suh constantly drawing double teams, while he still grades out as one of the best DTs in the league. Phillips is still cheap, but dump Mitchell.

4. We need two linebackers. Upgrade at MLB to get the more traditional "thumper" with size that can also cover well. This allows us to kick Alonso over to weakside. The second linebacker will be our new strong side starter. If we add two, I'm okay with the depth provided by Hull and Hewitt. Jenkins, Butler and Misi are probably goners.

5. Competition at nickle CB. I like McCain, but he's had an up and down season. I'm probably in the minority, but I like our boundary corners with Lippett, Maxwell and Howard. I've been critical of Maxwell early in the year, but it's clear he is playing well now. Plus he has the size we are looking for. I know we have some members who don't agree, but read this from Armando yesterday:

CB Byron Maxwell had another solid game in pass coverage, allowing only three of seven passes thrown his way to be caught for 34 yards. He has not allowed more than 42 yards in any game since Week 3 against Cleveland and has been a top 10 cornerback in the league the second half of the season.

Also this: Maxwell’s 15 passes defensed this season are the most by a Dolphins cornerback since 2008 and are only six short of the team record established by Patrick Surtain in 2000.

6. We need at least one tight end. I like what Sims and Gray bring to the table, but we need to add to that a dynamic seam threat that can also block. We intended this with Cameron, but it never panned out for us and he's probably going to retire (or should). This also goes to the running game, if we have a good offensive line and can add two great blocking tight ends for short yardage, that would be a really nice weapon to have.

7. Receiver could depend on what we decide to do with Stills. It's clear that Carroo, Landry and Parker are all locks, and we won't give up on Grant after one year - hell he did score a return TD. Coming into the year, I did not think Stills would stick. Now, we're at a point where he's leading our receivers with TDs and provides a legitimate deep speed threat. I'm not sure I'd just dump him without a plan to replace what he provides in our offense.

I've been thinking about how the NFL is a copy cat league. So given Dallas and Oakland's success, primarily due to DOMINATION by the offensive line I'm thinking there will be a historic run on offensive lineman in round one leaving some serious talent defensively on the board in round two. Thoughts?

Already been done in '13. Two guards taken in the top 10 even. Results were so bad I highly doubt teams make that mistake again. Apparently college teams don't teach 'em how to block at the NFL level anymore, or something. scratch

I would actually put TE high on the list.  This offense sucks on third downs and Landry is the only reliable receiver on the team.  Having a big-time TE that can stretch the field, dominate the middle and provide a 'safety blanket' for Tannehill would be HUGE for the Phins.  And Gase does usually use the TE much more in the passing game than he has this season.  It would also take some pressure off of a pretty lackluster group of WRs.

Speaking of WRs, I expect Stills to chase the money and leave in free agency.  Without him, our receiving corps becomes very slow and one-dimensional.  Parker is unrelaible and Carroo doesn't seem like anything special.  We need a speed guy if Stills leaves.  Grant is fast, but he's a bottom-of-the-roster type who may not even make the team next season.

MLB would also be very high on the list, obviously.

And yep...surprise, surprise - the OL and DL both need rebuilds once again.  Same story every offseason.

Safety is a big hole IMO.  Jones will be back, of course, but I have been very unimpressed with IAQ.  He's a JAG.  Rambo and Thomas are serviceable in dime packages, but both are role players at best.

IMO CB may not be high on the list for the Phins, because they seem to love Maxwell, Lippett, Howard and McCain.  I'd love to upgrade, but I have a feeling the Phins will roll with what they have for another year.

Way too many holes to adequately fill in one offseason.  But between the draft and free agency, I think this roster will look VERY different again next season.

and right on cue, Armando poaches this board once again for one of his "blogs":

Dear Santa, please deliver the Dolphins two LBs, OL help, a DE, a TE and maybe a WR, too...

Because of the liberalization of the passing rules, teams have gotten smaller at LB for the most part to combat these new-breed TEs.

So, what's the natural reaction? Start running again. Get a great OL and pound it at these teams that won't be able to stop it. Also, they will be able to utilize a true west-coast offense against these teams, which is most of them.

The league goes back and forth on this shit. They draft to stop one thing, but then they leave another area open.

I'd gear up for the running game again.

Well, the Dolphins have been investing heavily in the OL for years, both with high draft picks and free agent $$$ - just as much if not moreso than Dallas and Oakland.  Just like anything else, it's not how much you invest, but how you invest.

The Dolphins need to invest in the OL more wisely moving forward, and that includes finding quality O-linemen outside of the first round in the draft and not dropping huge $$$ in free agency.
