I have mixed feelings about this game.  A small part of me thinks the Phins can hang in there and pull out a victory at the end.  But mostly, I feel like this will be an ugly Steelers blowout.

Either way, it's great to be back in the playoffs!  I pulled out my 2008 AFC East Divison Champions hat for the occasion, and the Heinekens are on ice!  I am ready for playoff football!!!

GO PHINS!!!

Totally agree. Miami defense is sloppy and can't do anything. Lets hope that Vance Joseph takes the HC job in Denver.

Really tough to see this, but we knew we had a lot of work to do. This would have been a very tough proposition even with a completely healthy team.

Draft priorities:
1) LB
2) DBs
3) O-line depth

Man, what an ugly, ugly game. Pathetic on both offense and defense. Fumblin' Matt Moore was in prime form, and Ajayi couldn't do a damn thing. The defense was just godawful...no pass rush, Lippett couldn't cover anyone, Alonso was a total non-factor, there was zero run defense. It's a miracle this team won 10 games with such a crap roster. A lot of work to be done this offseason.

Miami will draft 22nd this year's draft. It not that bad so I getting started in looking who I would draft if I was Game and Tannebaum

No one's going to win in the playoffs with that kind of roster, but particularly with the starters that were out. We took a nice first step this season and now it's time to fill some holes with talented players.

If anything, yesterday's game reinforces the fact that Gase damn near worked a miracle to get this squad to 10 wins. We were thin going into the season, and then we lost way more than the NFL average number of starters injured year to year.

I'm only whining when I say "why do we seem to make the playoffs only to get blown out and embarrassed?" I don't expect this to continue under Gase.

Let's take a moment to remember some of the great things that happened this season:

- We actually cut Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglas and Billy Turner. Good riddance!

- We swept both the Jets and the Bills. This doesn't happen often, no matter how good or bad they are.

- Stills developed into a legitimate deep threat. Can we really afford to let him leave?

- We found a starting running back, and it looks like we have good depth with Williams and Drake.

- Tannehill owns the team now. It was clear from the way players responded to his injury. I am heartened by his performance, and I believe he will continue to develop under Gase.

- We found a head coach, finally! This cannot be debated. From the 1-4 start to a 10-6 finish, losing players left and right all season, yet we still got it done.

It was just a gutless performance by the Dolphins all around.  Yeah, we had injuries...but that's no excuse to not even show up.  That game was over after the opening drive.  It's even worse when you have a guy like Ajayi bitching all week about how he didn't make the Pro Bowl and the Dolphin offense was being overlooked and disrespected...and then he averages 2 yards a carry and the offense scores 12 points.  What a joke.

For as much good as he's done, I will say this about Gase - when we play a good team, he gets completely outcoached almost every time.  A 1-6 record against teams that won at least 8 games...and we allowed 30+ points in 5 of those 6 losses.  That's awful.  Shows that we are not close to being ready to hang with the big dogs.

I agree with a lot of your points, but I do have to comment on these three...

Ajayi - yes, he did a lot of good things, and 1200+ yards and three 200-yard games is amazing.  BUT...half of those total yards came in just 3 games, and in the other 10 games he started (including the playoffs) he eclipsed 100 yards just once and actually had less than 60 yards 5 times.  He also struggled at times as a receiver.  I'm not complaining, because Ajayi single-handedly won some games for us - but for this team to get to the next level, we're going to need Ajayi to show a lot more consistency.  Top RBs can't disappear for games at a time.

Tannehill - I do think he improved in a lot of areas, most importantly confidence.  But - we need him to produce more.  He still doesn't throw enough TDs, and he still has games where he just looks completely lost (Tennessee and Baltimore for example).  He also continues to struggle early in games.  Yes, he's our QB (for now) - but he needs to play at a much higher level if we're ever going to win a Super Bowl.

Gase - 10-6 is great, considering where we've been.  But as I posted earlier in this thread, Gase and his team got completely outclassed when they played teams that finished .500 or better - going 1-6 and in most cases getting blown out.  Yes, the talent on this roster is weak overall.  But Gase is still learning on the job, and we have to hope that he can take a step forward instead of a step backward in his second season.  He needs to get much better at in-game adjustments, and he needs to figure out how to get his offense to start fast and convert first downs.  Let's not forget: Tony Sparano won 11 games in his first year as a Dolphin head coach, and Dave Wannstedt won 11 games in each of his first two seasons as a Dolphin head coach.  So while there is reason for optimism with Gase, I am not yet convinced that he is the right man for the job.  Time will tell.

So while there is reason for optimism with Gase, I am not yet convinced that he is the right man for the job. Time will tell.

Fair point, however those two examples bolster my argument regarding the level of talent on this roster. Sparano had a great QB in Pennington, who fell into our lap by a stroke of pure luck, and we still had a lot of talent on defense. Wannstedt had the excellent defense that Jimmy Johnson built, still in its prime.

Gase somehow made it work with a completely broken defense, starting backups at 5 of the seven starting positions in the back 7, to match with half of a defensive line. Also, let's not forget his work with both of our QBs. Tannehill best season ever, and Moore racked up a 105 QB rating over four games. That's excellent coaching.

To your point, he is learning on the job and he's not perfect. However, from what I've seen this year, he is a leader and he has both the football intelligence and the work ethic to improve over time. I only expect him to get better.

As for the game… That was indeed an ugly, ugly game from the Phins. The defense was nonexistent. They couldn’t cover or tackle. The Steelers had all they needed to win 8 minutes into the game. And then an entire drive of nothing but handing the ball off to Bell and the Phins had absolutely no way to stop it despite knowing it was coming. The offensive line could not protect Moore who in turn could not hold onto the ball – even when the faintest glimmer of false hope peeked though. The only positive about this game is that it wasn’t a 62-7 drubbing ala Jacksonville – and if Pittsburgh hadn’t taken their foot off the gas, they very well could’ve doubled their first 3 possession, 3 touchdown output. There really isn’t (shouldn’t be) much more to be said about this game.

As for the season… Overall it was positive in that the Phins made the playoffs when very few (including myself) gave them much chance to win more than half their games.

As for the future… I hope this playoff appearance isn’t fool’s gold. The Phins have a long way to go and things may indeed get worse, a lot worse, before they get better. The Phins have a lot of holes to fill in order to improve and the things that did work to make this a decent season are either hurt (Tannehill, Pouncey and Jones), possibly leaving (Stills and Branch) or getting older (Wake and Albert). Throw on top that the Phins have fewer than normal draft picks to address needs and this Pittsburgh playoff loss might be seen as the high-water mark a year from now.

And speaking of fools…

When asked how close his team was, Ross responded: “Three games away. That's how close we are.”

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article125318674.html

3 games and a universe apart from the good teams.

This is an excellent point, and you spelled out the risk we face this offseason. All teams are trying to get better, and those that don't will get worse for certain. Tannenbaum and Grier are in the spotlight now. They need to not only replace the players we lose, but patch the holes that were blindingly obvious this season as well. It's not easy, because every team is trying to do the same thing.
