Love him or hate him, Buddy was a legend.  They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Guy always made the game more entertaining than it would have been otherwise. R.I.P.

My thoughts echo this guy's.

I find the outpouring of sympathy and leaguewide mourning for Ryan a little surprising. He was a great defensive coach, but he also had a terrible reputation as a dirty coach who encouraged head-hunting. He had a bad temper and got into both physical and verbal fights with colleagues. Not that we shouldn't recognize his passing or celebrate his career, I'm just surprised that people around the league seem so saddened. Ryan wasn't an especially popular guy.

And the old me would have probably said something like this.

It never ceases to amaze me how the perception of public figures change drastically the minute they die. While he was alive, most observers considered Buddy Ryan an asshole. Now suddenly he was a great guy who deserves to be showered with affection? I don't get it.

The one thing about Ryan I do respect is that he lied about his age to get into the military for WWII, which explains the confusion about how old he was when he died. So see, I can be positive Cool

BTW Pat Summitt died on the same day, going out exactly like my dad.

Buddy was great for football. Sure, I hated him, but he was entertaining and he was an absolute genius defensive coach. The NFL needs guys like Buddy Ryan. The closest we have today is Rex Ryan, and he fits more in the overrated buffoon category.

I never hated him. Never had any reason to: hey, we beat his '85 Bears and we beat his 1990 Eagles in another memorable game. Smile

I believe Ryan cost Warren Moon a ring, and he was an asshole. Good villain though. Another coordinator too big for his shoes. Still, RIP.

I can't blame Ryan for that, he was long gone by the time the Oilers blew that 32-point lead in the playoffs. Moon was just a choker who also loved to slap his wife around. But that's another subject for another time.

Actually, if I remember right Ryan was hired as a result of that epic playoff meltdown in Buffalo in the '92 playoffs.  Jack Pardee fired Jim Eddy and hired Ryan.

In the 1993 playoffs the Oilers were upset by Joe Montana's Chiefs.  No matter, I don't think they were going to win at Buffalo the next week anyway.  Bills not only beat them with Frank Reich in those 1992 playoffs, but also beat the 1993 team in Buffalo during the regular season.
