Revisiting Tannenbaum with the Jets
I posted this when Tannenbaum first got the job, but it's time to revisit...
Here are the number of draft picks the Jets had while Tannenbaum was GM...keep in mind that there are 7 rounds in the draft:
2006 - 10
2007 - 4
2008 - 6
2009 - 3
2010 - 4
2011 - 6
2012 - 8
So out of 7 drafts, the Jets had fewer than 7 picks FIVE TIMES! Is there any wonder that the Jets were in cap hell when Tannenbaum got canned? You can't build depth without draft picks, and if you rely on trades and free agency instead of the draft you very quickly have a roster that's old and overpaid.
Contrast the Tannenbaum Jets with the Packers, a team that builds through the draft and contends every season, over that same time span:
2006 - 11
2007 -11
2008 - 9
2009 - 8
2010 - 7
2011 - 10
2012 - 8
There you have it: The Pack never had less than 7 picks, and they had more than 7 picks in 6 of the 7 seasons. The Steelers and Patriots, of course, have a similar track record with number of picks.
People always want to know the blueprint for building a winning team. There is no one answer, of course, but if you want to build a team that is always in the hunt, step one is building through the draft - NOT trading picks away and spending free agent money like a drunken sailor.

It's so easy to see from a fans perspective and yet the front office in Miami hasn't figured it out. The best teams always have a blueprint for success. The worst teams keep doing the same things over and over and over again.

Exactly. Talent evaluation is pretty much everything in the NFL, but the Dolphins continue to hire guys that have no experience or shitty track records. Tannenbaum was fired and out of the league for years? Sure, hire him and let him run the show. Chris Grier was part of the scouting staff that has screwed up Dolphins drafts for the past 15+ years? OK, promote him to GM. Adam Gase is just 37 and has never been a head coach? What the hell, hire him and give him final say over personnel decisions. This all sounded great on paper, right?
Maybe these clowns will prove me wrong and actually make the Dolphins a winner again. But forgive me for not holding my breath waiting for it to happen.
