Back story on the old OL coach
Flores, starting his second season as Miami’s coach, already has an offensive line coach problem. He’s gone through two of them in one season. He fired one four days into training camp and didn’t retain the other after the season.
And the intriguing thing here is that the firing of Pat Flaherty last August looks like a mistake now. Flaherty, with 20 years of NFL experience, resisted the idea of entitling rookie guard Michael Deiter, the team’s third-round draft pick.
So he kept Deiter working with the reserves early in training camp. Except the Dolphins, and more specifically Flores, wanted Deiter in the starting lineup.
The ensuing disagreement played a role in Flores firing Flaherty.
But guess what? Deiter indeed was not ready then. And he proved throughout the season that he wasn’t necessarily ready then, either. In fact, the Dolphins benched Deiter late in the season before putting him back in.
The point is Flaherty was right. Deiter wasn’t ready.
Yet that helped get him fired.

well, at least he wasn't doing coke off his desk. so does Flores want to empower coaches to do their job to the best of their abilities - or does he just want coaches that will do what he tells them?
And Flaherty’s replacement? Dave DeGuglielmo wasn’t necessarily fired. But Flores didn’t value him enough to give him a new contract, according to national reports.
So one of the most important assistant coach hires any head coach can make was a full-on miss by Flores in 2019.
i guess playing Deiter wasn't enough to save Guges' job either. really, neither one of these guys had any talent to work with. it was a no win situation for both of them. hopefully things will be different for the new OL coach.

Did Flores draft Deiter, scout him? Did Grier tell Flores he wanted another one of his busts, I mean picks in the field?
The real problem is the GM. He figured out how to get picks but I’m worried he’s going to take more of the crap that’s made Miami a loser. I’m talking Charles Harris type picks.

Re: Back story on the old OL coach
I read that yesterday also. Interesting.
End of the day, to fire a coach it HAS to be about more than just one player and a disagreement on starting lineup. That conversation is too easy: "We really need to look at the young guys to see if our investment will pay off, otherwise we are going in blind to the draft next season."
There must have been a disconnect in other/several areas - or a plain old clash of personalities/philosophy.
To be expected IMO - especially with a young, first-year head coach. We loved the results (the big W in New England that was key in ending their playoff hopes), we have to live with the downside also (rookie coaching mistakes, struggles to find assistants, etc).

Sounds to me like Flores wants coaches that can teach and develop young players, and he didn't think Flaherty and Guges could get the job done. I like the fact that Flores is quick to identify and react to his own mistakes.

Look at the defensive backs. By the end of the season they were playing tight coverage on everyone. These no name players looked like the best part of the defense. That’s coaching. Get those young guys some pass rushers and we are getting turnovers. Now their coach is promoted from within. He deserves it!

Agreed. Honestly, that was one of the best coaching jobs I've ever seen. We had no-name guys literally starting in the secondary after being on the team less than a week - and they played well! The way Needham and Wiltz developed throughout the season was really amazing to watch. Having a strong pass rush could make this defense borderline-great in a very short time.
As far as Dieter, he certainly had his ups and downs as a rookie. He was a solid player at Wisconsin, so the skills are there. Hopefully a year in an NFL strength program will help him out, and we'll see if the new coach can get him where he needs to be.

Gotta remember that they knew, meaning the Flores and the front office, this season was gonna be a wash even thought they won five games. Going through your progression and seeing if your coaching staff is right mean changes will have to happen. For the fact that he didn't keep either of his OL coaches mean they were doing well enough to make sure that Fitzpatrick was getting sacked a 50 times and making holes for the RB.
So all these articles about Flores firing people and not able to find the right coaches means nothing for a season that was suppose to be.

Right on, rightchea! This is a process, and Flores is going to look at everything all the time. If something isn't working, he will fix it ASAP. Big difference from past Dolphins teams that never wanted to make changes even when things clearly weren't working.
