Reading this article and watching the accompanying clips, it is really easy to see why Mike McDaniel and his staff liked this guy. It looks like there's a lot to work with, and IMO this looks like a developmental player that is actually worth developing. We'll see - but at least the pick makes more sense than it did at first glance.

I had some other QBs I liked better, but you can definitely see why McDaniel might have wanted Thompson.

Yeah, I think this is the biggest takeaway. We have not made any real attempt to develop a young backup QB in a very, very long time. McDaniel has changed that, and it's a smart move. I love the "look beyond the stats" angle too - I think too often we all get caught up in stats and numbers and fail to see how the guy actually plays.

Maybe this amounts to nothing, but it's an interesting move either way and I'm curious to see what McDaniel and his staff can get out of Thompson.
