Cameron Wake signs two-year, $15M extension with Dolphins
wrote:The Miami Dolphins have signed 34-year-old defensive end Cameron Wake to a two-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday.
The deal is worth $15 million, including $10 million fully guaranteed at signing and could grow to $17 million, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

No problem with this. Love to see great players stay and retire with team.

Really makes no sense to me. He's going to be a part-time player...why give him that much money, especially coming off an injury-plagued season at age 34???

Feh. If it was up to me Wake would've been traded 2-3 years ago. Oh well.

Only makes sense given our lack of depth behind him. Hopefully gives us time to groom and or acquire young replacements. Undoubtedly a priority next offseason

There is a cap savings and obviously the coaches have better insight to his physical condition than we do. He's done everything the right way and is being rewarded so I understand the move.

It seems like that Miami might try to keep him as a full time player or just have him there for short yard third downs. either way I was surprised.

I guess things could change, but it sounds like the Phins want Wake to be a pass-rush specialist...so maybe 20 snaps a game or something like that? Seems like an awful lot to pay a role player...and they only saved less than $1.3 million in cap space this season. DE wasn't addressed in the draft, so I guess next offseason it will have to be a priority.
Re: Cameron Wake signs two-year, $15M extension with Dolphins
Agreed. Not a terrible idea, maybe a bit pricey but also pretty short term.
We use some of the journeymen and younger players against the run, bring in Wake in passing situations or late in games if we have a lead and the defense is in pass rushing mode.
Next offseason, draft and even free agency I expect DE to be pretty high on the list. Of course, may take back seat to secondary based on how this year's group pans out - or doesn't pan out.

Too soon to really tell how they are going to use him. We have to see how he looks in camp, but knowing his discipline and workout regimen, he'll come into camp in top shape. I would not be slightly surprised to see him as an every-down guy at all.

Yep. They must think Wake has some gas left in the tank, some tread on the old tires....I hope they know what they are doing.
So far, the defensive moves they have made have left me feeling WORSE than when I heard Grandpa Joe was gonna keep Coyle!!
I dearly HOPE the defense is not going to stink on ice this season.

Man, every last one of us has been saying this out loud, and have been proven foolhardy for having hope, for far, far too long.

i'll be honest, i can not view this move from an objective point of view. i really like Wake and i want to see him succeed despite what history might lead me to believe. but what i can say without a conflicted opinion is that this team absolutely must draft (not "a", but) some explosive pass rushers very, very soon (as in it should have been done this past draft).

Re: Cameron Wake signs two-year, $15M extension with Dolphins
Yeah, don't get me wrong - I like Wake, easily the best Dolphin of his era. And I knew he'd be a Dolphin in 2016. But adding a bigger cap hit in 2017 to a 35 year old part-time player doesn't make much sense to me.
Re: Cameron Wake signs two-year, $15M extension with Dolphins
I did hear one talking head say it was obvious Miami was trying to fix the offense this year and that fixing the defense was going to be the next step. A two year plan so to speak.
I want to believe this buncha goobers has a plan, but after watching some of the draft moves which I considered to be absolutely brain-dead and idiotic, it is HARD to think these guys actually even know how to SPELL plan!
As Degarmo points out, we HOPE they know what they are doing, but so far, history says they are just like the last bunch of goobers who had a "plan" or didn't have a plan...either way, whatever, their decisions/moves/plans... DID NOT WORK!
So far, nothing I have seen has lessened the bad feeling...the foreboding sense of impending bad things...coming for the Miami Dolphins.
Bad things, man. Bad things.

No. Nothing. NOTHING will make me feel worse than seeing Coyle retained. Rarely has someone proven so quickly they were so wrong for the job. Our defense was actually a strong unit before he showed up, and he did nothing but ruin it.

There is some compelling evidence to support this theory. Look at the defensive players we have under contract. I think you would find that outside of Suh, most are under contract for the short term, varying from 1 to 3 seasons.
This screams of a patch-and-replace approach to rebuilding the unit. We found guys that fit our mold, and signed mostly aged veterans to short term deals. I would guess that next offseason we make a significant free agent pickup of some type on a long term deal, and focus more on drafting players to continue building on that side of the ball.
