Training Camp notes Empty Training Camp notes

Post by JMP Tue Aug 18, 2020 2:08 pm

Use this thread for any news from training camp.

I'll start off with some bad news:

Reports are coming out of Davie that the Dolphins have carted projected starting linebacker Vince Biegel off the practice field during today’s padded practice, Miami’s second in their stretch of preparations for the 2020 NFL season.

...

It is too early for anything definitive, but the reports from camp indicate that Biegel could not put any weight on his right leg and was very emotional in the immediate aftermath of the injury.

https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/2020/08/18/report-dolphins-lb-vince-biegel-carted-off-field-with-leg-injury/

Hope Vince is OK...he is a key part of the defensive rotation and played really well last season.

Some notes on new safety Kavon Frazier (former Cowboy):

https://www.si.com/nfl/dolphins/news/miami-dolphins-safety-kavon-frazier-could-become-a-free-agent-find

After the Miami Dolphins went on their shopping spree in free agency in March, it was fair to suggest they were done for 2020.

But they added one more unrestricted free agent shortly after the NFL draft in the form of former Dallas Cowboys safety Kavon Frazier.

The move may have seemed liked a bit of an afterthought at the time, in part because the Dolphins roster already featured a lot of safeties.

But that group dwindled over the past week when the team released Adrian Colbert and Steven Parker, and now Frazier looks like a player who could be in line for a clear role on defense in 2020.

“He’s tough. He’s fast. He’s had a lot of production in the kicking game," head coach Brian Flores said Tuesday morning. "I liked him coming out of college. Smart. He’s done a good job thus far. He’s a physical player.

"Right now we’re just working a lot of guys in a lot of different groups just trying to find the right combination of players. But he’s shown up positively so far in the kind of OTAs and the walk-throughs and now one padded practice. I’m happy where he’s at and hopefully we can continue to grow and improve over the course of the training camp, but he has some experience in this league, provides some leadership or has the potential to provide some leadership.”

Biegel out for the season...torn Achilles. Damn, that sucks. He was an ascending player and worked his ass off to earn a big role in this defense.

I don't have time to list highlights, but this is a great read about yesterday's practice. Yes, it's mostly a fluff piece, but there's some great stuff here:

I'm sorry, but I just cannot get the slightest bit enthused about this season. The quality of play will be the worst any of you have ever seen across the board and there will be so many injuries that mark my words, multiple teams will have SEVERE trouble fielding enough players to even suit up after 8-10 games or so. It's just going to be a months-long anti-American, pro communist propaganda statement, which is the only reason sports has been allowed to start back up to begin with. They couldn't care less about players getting infected, it's far more important that "the message" gets out. A message that's already gotten so old and absurd that both ESPN and the sports currently going on have their lowest TV ratings ever, at a time when millions are still being forced to stay home so they can "be safe". Until the domestic terrorist mob comes for them, that is. Kinda hard to watch the NFL when violent crime has been declared legal where you live and you might be killed at any moment. And remember, the athletes support this. They literally want people like you and me dead.

I'm actually more excited about this season, and football in general, than I've been in years. It probably has as much to do with football season bringing at least some shred of normalcy to what has been a very strange (and awful) year than anything else. It doesn't hurt that IMO this is the best and most competitive Dolphins team we've seen in a very, very long time.

In the grand scheme of things, it's probably a stupid idea to have any type of professional sports until this damn Covid crap is cleared up...but on a selfish level, I really need this season. I have no live music in my life...at least give me some damn football!!!

So far, all reports I've seen say the same thing: our rookie OL are looking good! Sounds like Jackson is already in a "his job to lose" position at LT, and Kindley has been dominant at RG and may be on his way to starting. Hunt is battling Davis neck and neck for the RT job.

Keep in mind that this coaching staff is very much into "earn your job". Everything I'm seeing indicates that these three rookies are taking jobs - not being handed them. This is fantastic news. To have three rookie linemen developing into legit players so quickly is really a testament to the emphasis on hard work - and it also shows that we have some strong teachers on the coaching staff, and some smart guys in the scouting department.

Fitz was excused from practice today for unspecified "personal reasons". Hope everything is OK and he returns soon. As long as it's nothing serious, this is actually a positive thing - it gives Rosen and Tua more reps, which they both desperately need.

Rosen has supposedly looked really good this week.

I also heard he threw some amazing passes and had a nice "in the bucket" pass when the pocket broke down.  I don't think he got much if any run with the starters...I think Rosen worked mostly with the 1s.  Fact is, Tua won't be working with the starters anytime soon, at least not for any extended time.

It's just really difficult for young QBs this offseason...with the limited training camp and no preseason, there's just not a lot of reps.  But the good news is, every snap is a learning experience, and for good QBs every mistake is a chance to improve.

The best news of all is that the hip appears to be a complete non-issue.

I read that he's had a lot of problems pre-snap and the coaches are trying to get him to be more aggressive with his cadence...too timid in the huddle and at the line. But he's a got a big-time arm and that will no doubt show up in practice and he'll have some highlight-reel throws for sure. I don't think he'll beat out Taylor to start the season, but I bet he's starting by midseason if (when) the Chargers are struggling.

By the way - I don't want to come across as the "Tua defender" here...I just think this is exactly what we should expect at this stage. Tua hasn't played football since November and really didn't have much opportunity to do anything with the team before this week. So he should be struggling at this point, especially when playing with other rookies and back-of-the-roster players. The key is: is he learning from his mistakes and showing improvement on a daily basis?

Tua is NOT going to get thrown into the fire by this coaching staff, unless we lose both Fitz and Rosen, and this is going to take time and patience. The most important thing for Tua right now is reps, reps and more reps. They will be hard to come by once Fitz gets back, but Tua will need to take advantage when his number is called.

After looking at the photo of Rosen and Tua side by side I’m worried Tua looks like Dark Helmet from Space Balls. Maybe he’s having issues with his fit of helmet? His neck disappeared.

Very Happy Spaceballs references are always welcome! LOL

I think Tua looks a bit like Russell Wilson in the training camp pics.

Love hearing the camp reports on the rookie OL. If we can actually draft linemen (and Kindley was a fourth round pick) we can actually build a team the right way.

I've also read recently that Igbohnene (SP?) is playing very well, and is in the mix to start at boundary in case X Howard cannot get back soon enough to condition and practice in order to be game shape.

This training camp has delivered by far the most positive news I've ever heard about a Dolphins rookie class. It's not just one player that is drawing praise...it's a whole bunch! The OL is by far the best news, especially Kindley, but also Iggy, undrafted safety Brandon Jones, Malcolm Perry, Raekwon Davis, etc. I've truly never seen anything like it in Miami!

I can't wait to see these rookies in action!

Travis Wingfield
@WingfieldNFL
Big play of the day was a 70-yard TD from Tagovailoa to Perry. Ball traveled 50 or so in the air with a strong wind swirling.

The day then ends how it started — a seed right on the numbers of Ricardo Louis for a 30+yard TD from the rookie. Ball traveled 20 or so yards.

cheers cheers

Would love to see Tua get some play with the starters, but with this shortened camp it is unlikely.

Yeah it seems that Flores is ready to start Fitz week 1, and prob won't look to Tag unless we lose a bunch of games and/or the offense looks awful.

Regarding the starters, seems Preston Williams picked up right where he left off. As good as Parker was last year, I still think Williams will prove to be the superior receiver. He's been making plays since he stepped on the field, earned a starting spot, and nothing has changed this year. His talent has been obvious since day 1.

The only negative with Williams is he drops too many passes. If he can improve on that, the sky's the limit. He's a beast!

They are getting a lot of guys injured already. So far, Baker, VanNoy, Beigel have been hurt. Today they lose R Weaver. They brought back Trent Harris to replace Beigel add then Weaver goes down. They waived him injured. Hopefully, he clears waivers and they can bring him back for IR.

I hear talk of putting P. Williams back at PR. Don't do it. Give Perry or one of the young guys a shot. I think Iggy returns punts too.
