Resign matthews over Miller
Lauren Moranor wrote:Heading into the 2015 season, Rishard Matthews was not happy. The Miami Dolphins had gone out and drafted DeVante Parker while trading for Kenny Stills and signing Greg Jennings all but leaving him out of the picture. The receiver requested a trade from the franchise while showing concern over the amount of playing time he would get. However, for most of the season, Matthews was the team MVP as he now prepares for free agency.

This would be an interesting idea, even though Miller would be a better stay since Miami needs a RB

Matthews should be cheap, so I would try to keep him. But re-signing Miller would be my first priority.
Of course, we'd have to see who the coach is first to make sure these guys fit the new offensive system.

You can let Miller go and draft Elliott than resign Matthews, Get a Younger, Better & Cheaper back.

It's tricky, because we won't have enough draft picks to fix every position. Letting Miller walk means having to use a pick on a RB instead of, for example, LB or CB. But again - it depends on the offense we run. (Of course, if we had drafted David Johnson like I wanted to, instead of Ajayi, we wouldn't have to worry about RB...)
Re: Resign matthews over Miller
I have to agree Miami should keep Miller for the fact that Miami has too many holes for them to fill and the need in the secondary, LB and OL is much more of a must then RB

I think the first pick needs to be a corner

I wouldn't get stuck on one position. I'd go best player available for sure...could be DE, CB, LB, QB, etc. But we need so much, we can't afford to get locked in on one position or player IMO.
But yeah - looking at where we pick, there is a good chance CB will be the BPA (Vernon Hargreaves???)

My assessment of Miami's future: The new Dolphins coach goes into the draft with QB being low on the priority list. We draft a corner or linebacker in the first two rounds. A guard in round 3. A RB round four and three D lineman to finish the draft. After finishing last in the AFC East next year the team focuses in on QB for our first round pick.

Dolphins won't re-sign Matthews because they have Stills. We go into the season with Parker, Stills, and Landry as our top receivers. Matthews wants to be on the field more and Dolphins want Parker on the field more. Look for Matthews to sign a FA deal elsewhere. The team didn't do right by him two years ago when he was the best receiver in the pre-season.

That is actually very realistic...but it also wouldn't surprise me if they went into panic mode and took a guard at #8!
Re: Resign matthews over Miller
depending on the who they get for the coach next year and who they draft, Miami could be 2nd or 3rd

I was very, very unimpressed with Stills this season. I'd love to go into next season with Parker, Landry and Matthews as the top 3 receivers...that is a strong corps. To me, Stills adds speed but little else. But, you are probably right.
Re: Resign matthews over Miller
Stills had the same problem that Wallace had. He was under utilized because of play calling and inconsistency on the Qb and OL front. No depth on drop backs causes shorter routes. Neither of which gives stills a chance to be effective. If anything he sacrificed production for himself and increased Landry's perfoemance

As for Matthews, his contract will be dependent on who coaches. He is already got issues with the front office and having a new coach makes him even more weary of his future. With too many unknowns and past history I don't think he'll stick atound

If you were Matthews, would you stay?
I sure as shit wouldn't.
Two words why, Mike Tannenbaum.
Unless Matthews doesn't care about winning, then he should leave as quickly as possible.

If I was Matthews I would test the market as well. If no one wants him he could always fall back on Miami

I don't feel like Matthews is worth more than one ounce of extra effort to resign. If you get him for reasonable, fine. I think he's an above-average JAG.

I don't know if Tannenbaum is an issue with Matthews - I think the problem was Philbin. But, the two big remianing issues are Stills (who isn't as good as Matthews IMO), and a QB that really only targets one receiver!
Regardless, I think Matthews will find a better situation elsewhere.
Re: Resign matthews over Miller
If either Matthews or Miller re-sign with this clown show, it's all the evidence we need that they're not the sharpest tool in the shed.
