Rishard Matthews agrees with Greg Jennings that too many restrictions have been placed on Ryan Tannehill.

“When coach [Bill] Lazor was there, [Tannehill] really didn't have the flexibility he wanted,” Matthews told WQAM’s Joe Rose and Curtis Stevenson. “I don't know where the confusion was. I love coach Lazor and at times we were wondering why are plays [not] being audibled. I hope he gets that freedom in this new offense. Our second year, he had a lot of freedom.

“The staff now, they trust him, from what I'm hearing. I spoke to Ryan, and he's excited, too.”

Interesting that when asked about the problems with the offense, Matthews blamed not only consistency but also “creativity.”

so Tannehill had freedom (2nd year), but then was handcuffed by Lazor. and Matthews is critical of Lazor's offense as not being creative (which has been kind of obvious to even the most casual fan).

i agree that the excuse making for Tanny has to stop, but it also seems like he hasn't been given the support needed to really succeed. let's hope Gase can work his supposed magic.

I think Lazor sucks, and in fact I think I was one of the first people to say that.  I disliked that hire from day one.

That said, Matthews probably shouldn't be criticizing coaches while he's trying to land a free agent contract.  And, if he does get a big contract, it will be because of the success he had in the Lazor offense he's knocking.

On another note, as I've said before, part of the reason Tannehill has been handcuffed is because the coaches don't trust him.  It is pretty obvious that Sherman and Philbin lost faith in Tannehill and took some responsibilty away from him toward the end.  And of course, Lazor gave him even less responsibility when he became OC, and there's the story that Philbin was ready to replace Tannehill in the 2014 draft.  So yeah, Tannehill was clearly held back...but maybe there is a reason the coaches don't feel comfortable with him.

I guess we'll see what Gase can do, but I won't be surprised if we find that Tannehill has already reached his ceiling.

Could be the fact that Tannehill was making our practice squad defense look like the 85 Bears. Hard to build trust when that's happening Wink
