Mike Tannenbaum celebrates when good, young players the Dolphins drafted and developed sign with other teams. This is not a made up quote. This is what Tannenbaum actually said after letting Derrick Shelby and Rishard Matthews walk in free agency. It goes against the ethos of pretty much every one of the NFL’s most successful general managers, and is the kind of wisdom you could only get from an executive who believes the Super Bowl is played in March instead of February.

Tannenbaum tried to replace him with 30-year-old Matt Forte before pursuing restricted free agent C.J. Anderson. He struck out on both before whiffing on 30-year-old Chris Johnson for good measure.

Amidst all this wheeling and walking, Tannenbaum acquired CB Byron Maxwell from the Eagles despite the fact that he reportedly couldn’t even do a push up during his Dolphins physical. Tannenbaum failed to address any of his pressing needs while managing to create new ones. Tannenbaum is the only general manager in football who prefers other teams’ retreads to his own young stars. He’s also the only general manager to get fired by the Jets after using three of his final four first-round picks on Mark Sanchez, Kyle Wilson and Quinton Coples. Only the Dolphins thought Tannenbaum deserved a second chance after his Jets debacle. Only the Dolphins will probably give him a second contract instead of his second pink slip.

There is no need to keep someone around that doesn't know what he is doing on a team that has fans desperate for a Superbowl appearance.
