Tannenbaum NFL's 28th Best GM... Empty Tannenbaum NFL's 28th Best GM...

According to Rotoworld. He'd likely be even worse if not for four new hires whose ranking is yet to be determined.

http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/61907/57/nfls-best-gms-2016?pg=3

28. Mike Tannenbaum, Dolphins
Last Year’s Ranking:
— —

Mike Tannenbaum celebrates when good, young players the Dolphins drafted and developed sign with other teams. This is not a made up quote. This is what Tannenbaum actually said after letting Derrick Shelby and Rishard Matthews walk in free agency. It goes against the ethos of pretty much every one of the NFL’s most successful general managers, and is the kind of wisdom you could only get from an executive who believes the Super Bowl is played in March instead of February.

Although he’s undoubtedly been pushed by owner Stephen Ross, March is indeed when Tannenbaum thinks the Lombardi is awarded. In 2015, he made Ndamukong Suh the highest-paid defensive player in history. This year, he declined to franchise tag another homegrown talent, Olivier Vernon — a player the Giants deemed worthy of $85 million — in favor of signing Mario Williams. That would be the same Mario Williams just about every last Bills observer believes quit on the team in 2015. On offense, Tannenbaum concluded having one of the best young running backs in the league wasn’t good enough. He let Lamar Miller walk in the opening minutes of free agency. The Texans, one of the NFL’s most sophisticated running teams, pounced on the chance to give Miller $26 million. Tannenbaum tried to replace him with 30-year-old Matt Forte before pursuing restricted free agent C.J. Anderson. He struck out on both before whiffing on 30-year-old Chris Johnson for good measure.

Amidst all this wheeling and walking, Tannenbaum acquired CB Byron Maxwell from the Eagles despite the fact that he reportedly couldn’t even do a push up during his Dolphins physical. Tannenbaum failed to address any of his pressing needs while managing to create new ones. Tannenbaum is the only general manager in football who prefers other teams’ retreads to his own young stars. He’s also the only general manager to get fired by the Jets after using three of his final four first-round picks on Mark Sanchez, Kyle Wilson and Quinton Coples. Only the Dolphins thought Tannenbaum deserved a second chance after his Jets debacle. Only the Dolphins will probably give him a second contract instead of his second pink slip.

And this was written BEFORE this debacle of a draft.

Tannenbaum NFL's 28th Best GM... Empty Re: Tannenbaum NFL's 28th Best GM...

I can see the point of the writer who is leveling this criticism of Tannenbaum, but honestly this is little more than a steaming pile of tripe.

Letting Vernon go was the right move. Looking into the details of how talented edge rushers create chaos in the pocket proves that the pressures and sacks he collected were largely the result of Wake and Suh collapsing their piece and flushing the QB to Vernon. That's not the defensive end you pay $100 million for. You pay the guys like Wake who can create pressure and collapse the pocket without benefitting from someone else's work to do so.

Shelby was a nice role player, and we'll never know why Matthews was never the favored target in Miami but I don't view letting both of them walk as a problem as much as it was recognition they just weren't very good, or worth the money they got in free agency. Tannenbaum is a big believer in statistical analysis and prototypes for positions, which could explain one or both moves. We not only brought in Williams at DE, but also Branch and it looks like we are signing James Jones on Monday. Of all the concerns on this team, defensive end is not one of them. We are four deep with legit NFL starters, and we have youth behind those four that will battle to make the squad and get some snaps.

Dumping Grimes in favor of Maxwell was done for two reasons. You can't have that trainwreck Miko throwing shade at Tanny all day if you are giving him one last shot to prove he can be our quarterback. Plus, Grimes is small and Vance Joseph wants big corners. We have that now.

Look, Tannenbaum screwed up with the Jets and he was fired for it. This is his second shot to run an NFL team. Last year's ranking is blank because this is the first offseason where he truly controlled everything, including the hiring of Grier, and the search to land Gase.

He may very well fail again. Ross game him this chance now let's see what he does with it.

Letting Vernon walk and signing Williams were the two moves I have absolutely no problem with, so I agree that Tannenbaum shouldn't be dinged for that. But he's screwed everything else up to some extent. Letting Grimes go? Fine, but don't trade the #8 pick for someone who can't even do a pushup. Letting Matthews walk? Okay, whatever, but don't trade 3 picks to draft a replacement. Letting Miller go? I can see that, since I've said for years that the running game and RBs are mostly irrelevant in today's NFL. But you still need *somebody* to play it who doesn't suck and won't get injured at the drop of a hat, and right now I'm not convinced this team does. I'm also not convinced other GMs don't mock Tannenbaum in private for all his ridiculous trades.

It's one thing to inherit a bare bones, bottom of the barrel roster with more holes than Swiss cheese. It's another thing to create even more holes yourself.

I will agree that I hated his approach to the draft. Trading away so many picks seems ridiculous to me.

If many of these players pan out, however, I will revise my opinion.

I've freaking loved this offseason with the exception of Earl Mitchell and Dallas Thomas STILL being on the team. That being said, TANNEBALLS official title is not GM. I don't care if he's pulling the strings. He's not a GM. STUPID ARTICLE.

And BTW, if Mitchell AND Thomas are realesed I'll strongly consider elevating TANNEBALLS to god status. That's how pleased I am with the offseason.

I not sure how much I like from this off-season and I am not sure if Birdmond is being sarcastic but I feel like that if Gase fails and gets fired then Tannenbaum needs to be as well. There is no need to keep someone around that doesn't know what he is doing on a team that has fans desperate for a Superbowl appearance.

I think there is a good chance every move Tannenbaum has made so far will one day be looked on like the moves Dave Wannstedt made in his tenure with the Phins.

Hope I am wrong, but these moves remind me a lot of Tannenbaum's Jets moves.

Too much CLEVER and not enough football thinking IMHO.

I have to agree, Tannenbaum is doing the same thing that he did to the Jets as he is doing to Miami. The only difference is that Ross will get keep Tannenbaum forever until he get sales Miami or dies.

If it gets us to two AFC Championships I'll take it. Sanchez , Couples and Wilson were all highly touted prospects who didn't pan out.

As for our free agents I wanted all of our free agents to walk and that is what happened. I'm good with it.

Also keep in mind we have the most cap space of any team in the AFC EAST.

First off I love the fact that we all have different opinions but more NFL insiders agree with my view of our offseason than the pessimistic side.

And as far a the cap goes, the drafting of Tunsill is all the more brilliant when you consider the cap savings added on to next year when Albert is cut.

No sarcasm bro. I'm excited. Still not sold on Tannehill, and really that's all that matters, but I love the direction of the team.
