I'm going to be honest as always and just come out and say that I'd rather have seen Grier trade down out of the 2nd entirely than pick an injury prone CB. And the Fins would've been much better off.

Rumor has it that Washington failed his physical with a bunch of teams. That's probably why he's dropping.
Re: 2023 NFL Draft - Rounds 2-3 Discussion Thread
I checked in to see what they did hoping it was productive and something we needed. I understand our secondary is old but damn this is the least of our priorities except for replacing a former useless Greir pick in Iggy.

The ONLY way this pick can even REMOTELY be justified is if they ditch Iggy ASAP, which I guarantee they won't do.
We do this dance every single year, and every single year I get proven right almost every time.
Completely disagree. CB was a need. We have X, Ramsey and Kohou. Iggy obviously sucks and Needham and Trill Williams are coming off injuries. CB killed the season last year, and Grier made sure that it won't happen again. In a division with Allen and Rodgers, and a conference loaded with high-powered passing game, you can never have enough corners. Cam Smith is a really good corner and is going to fit this D perfectly.
If you hate Iggy, and I know you do, you should love this pick.
Trill's injury happened almost 10 months ago now. I think he's fine at this point. And how do we know Cam Smith won't get injured for the season before it begins? He is a Grier pick so the odds of it happening increase by 50% just from that alone!
Just you wait for the "Iggy just needs more time to develop, he's not going anywhere" statements from the team--and they'll actually mean it!

That's it, I'm fucking done. Just the absolute worst case draft scenario ever for today. I don't even care who they take now or if they give the other picks away. The result will be the same either way.

And that's why Grier is going to pick him, calling it now.

Thank you for getting it. At least *somebody* is on my side in this.
It's times like this I wish I had more alcohol in the house. Or any at all.

CB is absolutely something we needed. Before this pick we had three legit corners and a bunch of question marks. Not a good situation to be in when you play in the QB-dominant AFC. Remember last season when we were pulling guys off the street to play CB? We won't have to worry about that anymore. We just got a top 40 player at 51, at a position where we needed help. It's a good pick and he's going to help this team right out of the gate.

According to PFF College, Cam Smith had the best CB coverage grade in the entire SEC in 2021, at 89.7. This dude can play.

OK I give you that but we need to stop our QBs from getting pounded in the ground and create some holes.

The Fins' TEs combined for the fewest receptions by any TE group in the league last season, and in fact were the only group who failed to even reach 50 catches. But apparently in this offense it's perfectly okay for TEs not to make catches because muh blocking is so much more important despite the fact that this team was NEXT TO LAST in rushing attempts.
A team that hardly ever runs wanting its TEs to do nothing but block is such a Fins thing.

Sure, but we had a top 10 offense with a weak OL and we had a bottom 5 defense with a weak secondary. We are facing a murderer's row of QBs this season - as we will every season, being in the AFC - and we just HAD to get better at defending the pass. We'll still address OL at some point, and don't forget we're going to get a ton of cap space after June 1 when Byron Jones contract is gone. We'll be able to add a veteran OL if we don't get one in the draft.

Get used to it. That's what happens when you have the best WR duo in football and the best deep passing QB in football. I've been saying all along that TE is not going to get a lot of targets in this offense - it shouldn't be a surprise. Even Washington, the guy I want, is going to make his biggest impact as a run blocker.
The run game is only going to improve when the blocking improves. That's why all these pass catching TEs in the draft were never going to be Dolphins picks.

Juggling draft coverage and hockey right now. Islanders headed to OT. Fucking nailbiter of a game!
Re: 2023 NFL Draft - Rounds 2-3 Discussion Thread
Giants draft WR Jalin Hyatt at 73. Great pick for them. He needs work, but he'll be a deep threat right away.
Re: 2023 NFL Draft - Rounds 2-3 Discussion Thread
I would have liked a trade down given all the fine picks on the board but I'm OK with Cam Smith. Sanders and Schmitz along with Torrence were guys I was really interested in at the time and Turner was the other CB who seemed like a good value there. And there are several good CB's on the board as I type this (Phillips, Rush, etc) ten picks away from our third.
If Fangio wanted Smith, I'm OK with it though.

Browns draft WR Cedric Tillman at 74...so that makes back to back Tennessee WRs!

Yep, this looks like a Fangio pick. A physical corner with good height and ball skills. Seems like he can add 10 pounds to his frame, which should help with his tackling.
White1's posts about the importance of the secondary in Fangio's defense really highlight the value of this pick. As much as I want OL, this pick makes a lot of sense to me and it goes a long way to turning this D into a powerhouse - which will in turn make the offense better.
And there's a good chance Smith is a starter in 2024, assuming X becomes a salary dump.
Re: 2023 NFL Draft - Rounds 2-3 Discussion Thread
Less than 10 picks till the Phins pick again. Some good OL on the board if Phins want to go that direction.
Re: 2023 NFL Draft - Rounds 2-3 Discussion Thread
Tucker Kraft just went to GB. Josh Downs went right after that to IND, good value at 79.
Dawand Jones, Clark Phillips, Chandler Zavala and small school riser Joey Fisher available along with the sliding Darnell Washington.
If I had to guess right now I'd guess on Achane being the pick. I also like Ricky Stromberg, the C from Arkansas. If up to me I think I'd roll the dice on Jones if he's there at 84.

I bet Grier has his eye on a WR with the next pick.
