Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
Tim Daniels wrote:The Miami Dolphins are reportedly set to release veteran offensive tackle Branden Albert on Thursday after three seasons with the organization.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network first reported the news and noted Laremy Tunsil is expected to shift outside to tackle to fill the void. Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald confirmed the expected roster move.
The decision doesn't come as a major surprise given the financial implications.
Albert had two seasons left on the five-year, $47 million contract he signed with the Dolphins in 2014, according to Spotrac. His cap hit for the 2017 campaign would have been $10.6 million, but letting him go leaves just $3.4 million in dead cap space.

Not surprised that this happened. I see that Miami will draft an OG in the draft.

Roto wire wrote:Ekpre-Olomu (knee) was cut by the Dolphins on Thursday, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Ekpre-Olomu never played a snap for the Dolphins, so it isn't surprising to see him go. He will look to recover from his knee injury and then likely fight for a spot on an NFL roster this coming fall.

Alec Nathan wrote:The Miami Dolphins signed defensive end Mario Williams to a two-year deal prior to the 2016 season, but they cut ties with the former No. 1 overall draft pick Thursday following an underwhelming inaugural campaign in South Florida.
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald first reported the Dolphins had parted ways with the 32-year-old. Albert Breer of The MMQB confirmed Williams' release.

Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
YES!!!! Love the Albert move - makes total sense on many levels, most importantly Tunsil playing LT. Albert is still a good player, but even if you ignore the injuries the bottom line is we drafted a left tackle at #13 overall last offseason, making Albert and his huge contract unnecessary. Now -- let Bushrod go, and sign a guard and draft a guard.
Dumping Not-So-Super Mario was a no-brainer. He's clearly done with football - he got a shit-ton of money for absolutely nothing. Definition of "free agent bust".
As for Ekpre-Olomu - I never expected anything from him, so not a surprise at all.

Michell gone too.

There is also a significant savings in cutting Mitchell. He was scheduled to cost $4.5 million against the cap but with today’s release, the Dolphins save $4 million of that.
Mitchell, 29, was supposed to enter his final season of a four-year deal.
Mitchell spent most of training camp nursing a calf injury. He got healthy enough to play in the regular-season opener and then re-injured the same calf in the game. He spent the next seven games on injured reserve.
The Dolphins needed Mitchell so they assigned him as their lone player eligible to return from the IR list. Mitchell returned and after playing as a substitute three weeks, regained his starting job the final five games of the season. He finished with 17 total tackles.
The Dolphins decided the potential for another 17 tackles season was not worth the $4 million savings of cutting Mitchell.
This moves means Jordan Phillips, entering his third season, is expected to take over as the starter.

Another good move - Mitchell made a play here and there, but was mostly invisible.
Hopefully we can add a big run stuffer to strengthen the middle of the DL.

Mitchell being gone makes me so happy. One year late but still.

Just in: Albert will not be cut. It appears some teams are interested in trading for Albert.

that even better. Get at least a 3rd or 4th round pick for him.

Given Albert's age and salary, more likely a 5th or 6th IMO. Still, something is better than nothing.
Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
I'm hoping Dion Jordan and Koa Misi are the next players cut...addition through subtraction.
Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
I still waiting on that as well. I not sure why they weren't the first ones to go

Hopefully, we can sign that FA Guard, forget his name, to replace Tunsil. I wouldn't mind keeping Bushrod as a swing backup OG. Always good to have a vet on the bench to step in when needed.

I'd like Leary from Dallas but we need 2 guards. I can't decide who guard #2 should be. Hate to box yourself in for the draft. I'd like to have this fixed and sign one LB.

Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
Bold moves, and I love it.
To play it safe we would have kept Albert, and likely Mitchell as well. This front office is not satisfied with good, they want to be great. What a breath of fresh air.
Potentially trading Albert is awesome. I was reading an article from Mando, apparently his agent let the team know that, you know there is instant interest by multiple teams in signing Albert. They quickly reversed course and decided to shop him on the trade market. Most likely would be a "trade and sign" deal, and the team would be somewhere Albert wants to go - but hell we will net something at least. If not a pick, maybe another player at a position of need?
This is where Tannenbaum shines, he can make deals happen and he loves to negotiate with other teams on trades.
Anyway, here is the article from Mando with a little insight: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article133193154.html

Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
speculation is rampant right now.
Armando has the Phins trying to workout a trade with Jacksonville for Julius Thomas - although the sticking point is that Albert doesn't want to go to the Jags and can scuttle any deal.
and then Beasley has a trade for...
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article133203924.html
which would you rather swallow? Albert straight up for TE Thomas or...Albert and a high pick (likely our 2nd rounder??) for an aging, perhaps "top of the line" CB?

...Aqib Talib (who was with Adam Gase in Denver) and Richard Sherman (whose game fits Miami’s style), among others. Sherman has two years, $22 million in base salary left on his existing deal; Talib is due $30 million over the next three.
Money wouldn’t be an option with either, as the Dolphins are expected to have some $50 million in cap space.
For the Dolphins to make a trade happen, they would either have to surrender a starting player, a high draft pick -- or possibly both. They have options; Branden Albert isn’t part of Miami’s 2017 plans but remains on the roster, making him an intriguing bargaining chip.

Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
Personally, I'd prefer TE Thomas for a couple of reasons:
- As you say, the deal would most likely be "straight up" - we keep our draft picks.
- We address our need at TE in advance of the draft.
- I'm not crazy about big money corners. The front seven needs to be a strength, or the best secondary in the world won't matter much.

Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
Talib? No thanks...he's declining and has never played 16 games in a season.
Sherman? Depending on the compensation, I'd LOVE to see him in Miami. Still under 30, and has never missed a game. I hate trading draft picks, but I could live with this. But..why the hell would Seattle trade Sherman???
Julius Thomas...um, yeah, no thanks. He's always hurt, won't play with minor injuries, teammates don't think he's got heart, and he has sucked since leaving the Broncos. NO, NO, NO!!!

I've read the trade is for Javon House.

Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
Davon House is a decent slot corner. He did have an excellent 2015 season, but I'm not sure he's worth his salary - on the hook for $6 million in both 2017 and 2018. An upgrade over McCain for sure, but I wouldn't want to trade a pick for him...it shouldn't be difficult to find a decent slot corner somewhere else. If we could get him for Albert and not have to give up a pick, I guess that would be OK.
Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
I have to agree as well. IMO, Sherman is probably the only one that I would want in Miami.
there are tons of DB that could play that position if they wanted to draft one. Nothing wrong with having a young team that can get you to the superbowl

Yeah, Sherman is young and elite - that's the type of veteran I don't mind trading for. But again, I don't think Seattle is looking to trade Sherman anytime soon.
Re: Dolphins release, free agency and trades news
Julius Thomas had to be doing steroids at his peak. He looks soooo much smaller now.
As for trading, I just want a 5th round pick. FU Jacksonville!
