Only Four Teams Since The Merger... Empty Only Four Teams Since The Merger...

Lost the first two games of the season by a combined margin of -75 points or more.

Let's look at what happened with these teams the rest of those seasons, shall we?

1973 Saints: Outscored 102-10 in the first two games, but lost their third game by just 4 and then won 4 of their next 5. Yes, they finished just 5-9 but had just one loss by more than 22 points the rest of the way, and only three more defeats by 20 or more. Lost to the 49ers 40-0 later on but actually won the rematch.

1989 Steelers: Outscored 92-10 to begin the season, but won the next 2 and hovered around .500 the rest of the way before actually making the playoffs Shocked and then winning a game Shocked Shocked before giving Denver all they could handle in a one point loss. Having an established HOF coach at the time definitely helped though, so their situation isn't comparable to the 2019 Fins IMO.

1978 Colts: Outscored 80-0 to start, then actually won the third game Shocked but finished 5-11 and were actually lucky to have had a record that good. QB Bert Jones was 2-1 as a starter but was injured the rest of the season. However, this team clearly wasn't talented enough to have made the playoffs even if Jones had stayed healthy.

2011 Chiefs: I was actually shocked to discover that they were outscored by *only* 79 points the first 2 games because at the time it seemed a lot worse. They also went on to lose to an 0-7 Fins team 31-3, but did manage to somehow win 7 games and defeat the 13-0 Packers. Overachieved even more than the '78 Colts, and were IMO the worst 7-9 team ever. The next season KC dropped to 2-14, a record more indicative of their true talent level at the time.

SO...how would the Fins compare to these teams? There really is no comparison that stands out to me. Players in '73 had far more intestinal fortitude than those of today, so there's no way this team's coming close to 5 wins. The '89 Steelers have been covered already. They don't have the excuse of losing a star QB for 13 games like the '78 Colts (although some people are acting like Tunsil was somehow the key to the playoffs) and I cannot see them winning game three after the inevitable Pats drubbing at any rate. The '11 Chiefs were far more similar to a Gase-coached Fins team in that they were great at winning games they shouldn't which masked how awful they actually were. This team on the other hand is even worse than everyone thought they'd be, which was already the worst team in the league. In other words, even looking at other teams who had historically awful season starts really isn't any help in establishing that anything even remotely positive is on the horizon for the near future. But YMMV.
