For some insane, absurd, utterly nonsensical reason, our old pal JJ has suddenly decided to come out and reveal that...he could've traded for the top spot in the '98 draft and selected Payton Manning, but chose not to.

We got Jay Fiedler in the end, so it's all good.

Considering JJ's four year Fins history of offensive draft picks he'd have just spent it on Leaf, or some non QB.

Maybe even Moses Marino.

JJ's entire offensive legacy in Miami is basically taking over a team with a ready made HOF QB, and...immediately deciding said QB was a threat to his leadership and manhood and proceeding to do everything he possibly could to sabotage the offense in an extremely passive-aggressive way, while never having the balls to actually cut or trade the QB he clearly couldn't stand.

If he had made that trade, it would have taken the entire 1998 draft and likely most of 1999's.  Come to think of it, that would have been more than worth it, Surtain notwithstanding.

But seriously....the Colts trading down from 1 to 19?  Not likely, no matter what. Anyone really think they would have passed on Manning to move down and stick with 36 year old Jim Harbaugh another year with a 2-14 team?

I find it hard to believe the Colts would have traded down. Manning was the best no-miss prospect in the last what - 20 or 30 years? And he delivered.

You don't pass up a franchise QB. You trade down if the best QB on the board is Alex Smith. Not Manning. And no one knew Rodgers would be that good, otherwise he would have gone number 1.
